have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being` had therein to the accompanying draw- Y ings.
In the operation of pneumatic hammers, riveters, and other tools wherein compressed airis utilized for imparting movement to a reciprocable tappet, ram, Vor piston, which impinges against a detachable tool,.m any accidents have occurred due to the tool being discharged or projected from the hammer, resulting in injury to workmen and material. Various ldevices or attachments have been devised to prevent the accidental discharge of a tool, when knocked against a piece o'f work, butsuch devices or attachments have been more or less defective for Vthe purposes intended..V

The clutch jawsv 9 abut the end walls of the groove 10 and have beveled edges12 engaging beveled walls13 of the conical head 8. The inner ends .14 ofthe clutch jaws 9 abut the outer end of theshoulder 5, and as shown `in Fig. 2, the .clutch jaws 9 positively anchor the tool 11 relative to the sleeve 7 and the outer end of the barrel 1.
Mounted on the outer end of the shoulder 5 is an annular abutment 15 and encircling the shoulder 5, between the cap 6 and the abutment 15 is a coiled spring 16 whose expansive force holds the sleeve 7 inv a retracted 'position to retain the clutch jaws 9 in engagement with the tool 11.
Rotatable and reciprocable-on the shoul-v der L is an annular hand piece 17 having opposed. detachable studs18 extending into spiral grooves 19 in said shoulder, andthe hand piece -17 abuts the cap-6 so that when said hand piece is partially. rotatedv the studs. l 18 and the grooves 19 cause the hand piece to ride outwardly on the shoulderl4 and shift the cap 6 and the sleeve 7 against the expansive force of the spring 16. When the sleeve v7 is shifted outwardly theclutch jaws 9 are released and recede on beveled walls 20 of the conical head 8, so that thetool 11 may be removed. The spiral grooves 19 have circumferential end portions so that the hand piece 17 vmay remain .in an adjusted position'. I

and while inthe drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it
is tobe understood that the structural elements are susceptibleto such changes as fall Withinl the'scope of the appended claims.
What I' claim is '1. The combination with a pneumatic tool barrel having a tappet therein and the outer end of said barrel provided with shoulders, of a cap slidable on one of said shoulders, a sleeve connected to said cap and having a conical head, clutch jaws in thehead of said sleeve adapted to retain a tool in engagement With said tappet, a spring on said shoulder engaging said cap and kadapted to hold said sleeve in la retracted position, and
means on another shoulder of said tool barrel adapted for shifting said sleeve to release said clutch jaws. K' Y 2. The combination set forth in claim ,1 wherein said-means is kin the form of a ro-` tatable and reciprocable hand piece having a stud and groove connection with the shoulder of said tool barrel.
