Be it known that I, HARRY Gr. WELSH, of Ashland, in the county of Boyd and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Dislodging Drilling-Toolsg and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to apparatus used for loosening up a stringy of tools which has become caught in the operation of drilling oil, gas, or other, wells by the process of churn drilling, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and highly eiliient tool which is designed to be attached to the end of a column of pipe, or casing, and dropped over the string which may have become lost or fast so that the tool may be worked around the bit at the end of the string and the la-tter more quickly released than by the present method of drilling alongside the string with a solid spud secured to the rigging rope.
In the accompanying drawings, -Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a column of pipe with my improved spud attached thereto, a portion of a string of tools being shown in full lines. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the spud detached.
The column of pipe, more ycommonly called the casing, is shown at 1 in the drawings, and at 2 is shown a portion of a string of tools, including a bit, an auger stem and jars. My improved spud 3 has a cylindrical hollow head l, the upper' extremity being screw threaded, as at 5, to fit a coupling sleeve 6 on the lower end of the casing 1. The spud is cut away throughout the greater portion of its length to form a semi-cylindrical blade portion 7 which is adapted to work about the bit or other lost or fast tool.
In the use of my device, when a string of tools has become wedged or lost in the well,
the spud is attached to the lower end of casing, suflicientlylong to cover the length of the tools'in the well, and which is in turn attached by the commonlymsed substitute or coupler to the tool joint and the rigging.
'The spud may likewise be coupled direct toV the tool joint by a substitute or coupler for drilling around abit that may have broken off the string of tools. In either case the spud is then lowered into the well over the tools or bit and operated to drill around the same. The spud fitting closely around tools and being connected with the casing is readily and effectively handled in the drilling operation.V
When the tools have become dislodged the casing maybe again withdrawn and the spud removed. V
The advantages of my invention are apparent. It willrbe seen that in the use of my improved .device there is a saving in time "nd in cost of materials over the methn ods and long solid spuds heretofore used in drilling alongsidevfast or lost strings of tools. I claim as my invention:V
l. Apparatus for use in dislodging tools from wells including a column of pipe and a hollow spud secured to the end of said pipe, said spud having a semi-cylindrical blade-like cutting portion, said casing and said spud being adapted to surround said tool.
