Description

I. YREVINO.
FISHING TOOL.
APPHCATION FILED JUNE 7. 1915.
Patented Feb.15,19;16.
a m/'0; Trerimn IGNACIO TREVINO, OF ALICE, TEXAS FISHING-TOOL.
Application filed June 7, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TGXACIO TREVINO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alice, in the county of Jim \Vells and State of Texas, have invented new and useful 1mprovements in Fishing-Tools. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fishing tool primarily intended for use in connection with wells for the purpose of removing broken well rods, or tools that become lost in the well during the drilling operation.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a novel construction of a device of this cha'acter whereby the well rod or tool will be effectively gripped, thus eliminating all possibility of the same from becoming disengaged from the device while being removedfrom the well.
Another object of the invention is theprovision of a device of the above mentioned character which can be made to accommodate well rods that vary in diameter, and the parts quickly assembled and disassembled as the occasion may demand.
Among other features the invention embodies simplicity in construction durability and etliciency for the purpose intended.
In the drawing forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts inthevseveral views and in which: Y
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view showing'the device in use. Fig; 2 is a similar view showing the normal position of the gripping members'f Figfii is a plan View. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail viewsof the gripping members. I I
Referring more particularly to the drawing A designates a well casing and B the well rod ortool desired to be removed.
The device forming the subject matter of the present invention essentially consists of a tubular member 5 having a longitudinal bore 6 opening at both ends thereof, and diametrically opposed elongated slots 7 Arranged within the bore (rare the gripping members 8 and 9 respectively each of which is provided with a stem 10 projecting centrally therefrom through the slots 7 cotter pins 11 being passed through the stems to retain the gripping members operatively associated with the bar. the said members being supported for slight vertical pivotal movement to permit the rod to pass therebe tween and to be gripped thereby as the de- Specification of Letters Patent.

vice is lowered into the well. The gripping member 8 comprises what may be termed a halt disk having its gripping edge beveled as at 12 while the member 9 is circular in outline and provided with a Vshaped opening, theedges of which are beveled as at 1.3. In normal position the adjacent edges of the gripping member are arranged in overlapped relation as shown in Fig. 2.
Screwed upon the lower end of the member 5 as at 14, or otherwise suitably secured thereto is a funnel-shaped member 15 which serves in the capacity of a guide for directing the rod into the bore 6 of the member 5 i as the latter is being lowered into thewell.
Secured to the upper end of the member 0 through the medium of a coupling 16 is a short pipe extension 17, and fixed thereto is a hanger 18 to which one end of the cable 19 is secured.
In use the device is lowered into the well until the rod B enters the bore 6 whereupon it will engage the gripping members, slightly raising the latter so as to pass therebetween. The members 8 and 5) respectively then gravitate into engagement with the rod B in the manner shown in Fig. 1, and as will be readily obvious from this construction,
'the greater the pull upon the cable 1S) in the act of withdrawing the rod from the well, the more effectively will the members 8 and 9 grip the same. \Vhen very heavy pipes are to be raised from the well the extension 17 with the hanger 18 is removed, and a pipe (not shown) of suitable-length screwed into the end of the coupling 16. In order to permit the device to be used for removing the wooden rods, or rods of greater diameter than that shown it is only necessary to remove the funnel shaped member 15 "and the gripping member 9, at which time the mem her 8 effectively grips the rod therebetween and the wall of the bore (3.
It is believed from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be thoroughly understood without requiring a more extended explanation and therefore the same has been omitted. However I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction illustrated and that various changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a tubular member having a longitudinal "ing a hollow tubular member." having 0pposed longitudinally extending slots, gripin members arran ed in overla) in relation within said tubular member, each ofsaid gripping members having a curved stem projecting through said slots and normally engaging the lower end wall of the latter, a 20 pin passed through said stem whereby each of said members is supported for pivotal movement, said tubular member being interiorly threaded adjacent its lower end, an, 7
exteriorlv threadedcone-shaped element as- 25 sociated therewith, and means-for suspending the device.
In testimonywhereof I aifiX my signature in presence of'two witnesses.
