Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drilling Apparatus, of which the following is a specificaton. p
The present invention relates to drilling apparatus, and more particularly to means for supplying cleansing fluid to the bore of a drill bit for delivery to the bottom of the drill hole to eject the cuttings.
The principal object is to provide simple and effective means of a novel character for supplying both gaseous and liquid cleansing fluid to the drill steel bore.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a longi tudinal sectional view through the head end of a well known type of drilling apparatus. I

In the embodiment illustrated, a portion of the usual barrel is illustrated at 3, the piston chamber 4 being closed by a head 5 fitted to the front end of said barrel. The chuck is shown at 6, and interposed between the chuck and head. is a collar 7. The chuck 6 includes a bushing 8 for the reception f the rear end of the drill steel, a portion of which is illustrated at 9. I This steel, as usual, has a bore 10 longitudinally therethrough for directing cleansing fluid to the bottom of the drill hole:
The collar 7 is provided with a nipple having a liquid inlet 11 terminating in a relatively small port 12. Thejoint between the collar 7 and the head 5 is such as to provide an annular groove or passageway 13 that is in communication with one side of DRILLING APPARATUS.
