JOHN BROWN, OF STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
MODE 0F ATTACI-IING BUOYS TO VESSELS FOR THE PURPOSE OF RAISING THEM.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 1,844, dated September 28, 1839.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BROWN, of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful improvement in buoying up ships or vessels without discharging or lightening the cargoes of the same or any part thereof, so that less depth or draft of water is required for floating and navigating such ships or vessels than otherwise would be required, and that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of said apparatus or improvement as invented by me, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, inaking part of this specification.
First. To an ordinary ship or vessel A propelled by sails, steam, or otherwise, there are afiixed a sufficient number of eyebolts or staples B of iron or other substance along each side of said vessel at or near the light- Water line. The said staples being of sulficient strength to sustain the weight of such vessel or such vessel and cargo at the height desired.
Second. Brackets olI iron or other Inaterial are connected with said eyebolts or staples by hooks, keys, or otherwise, extending from the vessel; and said brackets are of such length and strength as ,the size and weight of the vessel may require either in a horizontal or inclined position.
Third. There are braces D oit' iron or other material of sufficient size and strength extending from the sides of the vessel at or near the gun wales and connected with the brackets near the outward end of the same by which the brackets or arms are held rmly in the desired position.
Fourth. A bag or bags E composed of oilcloth, india rubbercloth, or other substance of suitable size and strength made airtight are placed under the brackets, having a pipe or hose F attached leading from each bag to the deck of the vessel or other place convenient to be inflated with air or other light fluids by means ot' a common force pump, bellows, or otherwise to a degree suiiicient to buoy up or raise the vessel and appurtenances to the desired height in the water.
