MILL FOR COMPRESSING AND GRINDING- GRAPES AND OTHER SMALL FRUITS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,448, dated August 14, 1855.
To all 'whom @t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Z. COLEMAN ROBBINS, of the city of IVashington, in the District of Columbia, assignor to Anson Martin, of Norwich, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved machine for grinding grapes and other small fruit by the same operation that enables a large portion of the juice to be pressed therefrom without breaking the seeds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, Figure. l, being a top view; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a vertical section in the line of Fig. 1; Fig. et, a vertical section in the line y y of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 a sectional view of a portion of the machine detached.

The frame of my improved grape grinder, may be constructed in any well known manner.
A, B, are the grinding cylinders, the peripheries of which are generally corrugated. The journals of the shafts e, f, of the grinding cylinders, are received into journal boxes which are secured to the portions s, s, of the frame. The boxes of the shaft e, are permanently secured in their positions, and the boxes g, g, of the shaft j', are arranged in such a manner that they can be moved by means of the set screws p, p, and be secured by means of the set screws t, t, which arrangement, enables the grinding cylinders to be placed at any desired distance from each other.
The grinding cylinders A, B, are connected to each other by means of the cog wheel c, on the shaft 6 and the pinion cl, on the shaft j', whose teeth work into each other,
which arrangement, causes the cylinder B, to revolve at a considerably higher speed than the cylinder A. The ends of the grinding cylinders A, B, are closely embraced between the sides m, m, of the grape box. The ends n, n, of the said grape box, are secured to its sides in oblique positions, with their inner ends nearly in contact with the peripheries of the grinding cylinders. A
reciprocating compressor z', works in grooves in the sides m, m, of the grape box, which rise vertically from the space between the grinding cylinders. The said compressor z', is connected to the outside metallic plates h, l1., by means of the screw fv, o, which pass through slots in the sides m, m, of the grape box. A reciprocating motion is imparted to the compressor z', in the following manner, viz: An upward movement is imparted to said compressor by means of the springs j, j, which rest on offsets u, u, on the outer sides of the grape box, and whose upper ends bear against arms at the upper ends of the plates It, h, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and a downward movement is imparted to the said compressor, by means of the cam wheels g, g, on the shaft e, whose projections, as they are rotated, strike against arms at the lower extremities of the said plates L., la.
Motion may be imparted to the grinding cylinders and to the compressor z', by means of a crank on the shaft e, or by any other manner. The compressor z', may either work in grooves in the sides of the grape box, or it may work on any suitable ways secured to the said sides of the box.
The grapes, (or other fruits,) to be acted upon, are placed within the box m, m, n, n, and when motion is imparted to the grinding cylinders, and the compressor z', the action of the said cylinders is to carry the grapes inward, and the action of the compressor is to force the grape down between said cylinders. The rapid movement of the periphery of the cylinder B, acting against the slower moving periphery of the cylinder A, tears the skins and pulps of the grapes to pieces, as they pass between said cylinders; and in their disintegrated state the grapes fall into the trough 7c, in the proper condition to be acted upon by the press. The combination of the compressor with the grinding cylinders, in my grape grinding machine, greatly adds to its performance, and enables a larger proportion of juice to be forced out of the fruit during the grinding process than would otherwise be the case.
In adjusting the relative positions of the grinding cylinders and the compressor, they must not be allowed to come into sufficiently close contact with each other to break the seeds of the fruits, which they are made to operate upon.
I am aware that a reciprocating knocker or compressor has been employed within the hopper of fruit grinding machines in combination with a concave and a grinding cylinder; also that two cylindrical rollers have been employed in combination with a feeding roller Within the fruit hopper. I disclaim both of these arrangements, also these devices separately considered. But

The combination and joint action of the compressor z', and the cylinders A, and B, for compressing and grinding purposes, substantially as herein set forth.
