Specification. of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTER J. BEATTIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cohoes, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Guards for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters I marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.

This invention relates to attachments for the type of sewing-machine commonly used in factories in which the machine is mounted upon a bench or table by means of a benchstand or other support to which the bedplate of the machine is hinged along its rear side, whereby the machine can be swung upward to afford access to the mechanisms on the underside of the base-plate for the purpose of cleaning, lubrication, etc.

Such machines are usually connected with the bench-stand or support by means of two hinges, one of which is in the path of the work as it leaves the needle of the machine; and it frequently happens that the work in passing over sald hinge-connection becomes soiled by oil used for the lubrication of the hinge.

The principal object of the present invention is to provide an oil-guard which. will shield. the work from contact with said hinge or oil from said hinge as the work passes over the hinge-connection.

Other objects will appear in connection with the following description.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a top plan view of a sewing-machine mounted upon a bench-stand to which the rear side of the bed-plate of the machine is hinged, showing my improved oil-guard in position to cover the hinge which is in the path of the work.

Fig. 2 is a view in rear elevation of the left-hand corner-portion of the same as seen in Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1 is a and the overhanging head or arm, 3, with the other mechanisms common to a machine of this type, a detailed construction of the machine not being shown as the same forms no part of the present invention.

The bed-plate, 2, of the machine is hinged to the bench-stand, 1, by means of two hinges, 4 and 5, arranged along the rear side of the bed-plate whereby the machine can be swung upward from the position shown by solid lines to that indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, thus permitting access to the mechanisms (not shown in detail) on the underside of the bed-plate for purposes of cleaning, lubrication and repair.

The bed-plate of the machine rests at its corners upon four felt'pads 7 From time to time the hinges, 4 and 5, require lubrication; and due to an excess of oil or to the vibration from the operation of the machine, the oil tends to work upward between the hinge-members.

The hinge, 4, being in the path of the work the oil thus working out from said hinge frequently soils the work, causing considerable damage and loss.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a guard-plate, 8, having along its rear and side edges, a depending flange, 9, which plate is adapted to receive andcover the hinge portion, 10, of the bench-stand, while the front end, 11, of said plate is extended to overlap the neighboring edge-portion of the bed-plate, 2, of the sewing-machine as shown in Fig. 1.

This guard-plate, 8, is mounted by means of a spring-hinge, 12, upon a bracket, 13, which bracket is detachably mounted upon the rear side of the hinge-portion, 10, of the bench-stand by means of a screw-bolt, 14, inserted through slotted aperture, 15, in the bracket into said hinge-portion of the bench-stand.

The guard-plate being thus mounted can be swung upward from the position shown lapping of the bed-plate, 2, of the machine by the front edge-portion, 11, of said guardplate, the guard-plate is automatically swung to said raised position by the upward swinging movement of the machine hedplate, so that the guard in no way interfers with the operation of the machine.

The felt-pad, 7, at the corner of the ma chine adjacent to the hinge, 4, is quite near said hinge, and frequently becomes soiled with oil which passes along the bench-stand from the hinge, or it may become soiled with oil spattered from the operating mechanisms on the underside of the bed-plate.

Such oil tends to work up from the pad alon the edge portions or the bed-plate, 2, tending to soil the work passing from the needle of the machine.

For this reason in the preferred form of my invention I form an angular lateral extension, 16, of the plate, 8, which extends over and around the neighboring cornerportion of the bed-plate, 2, said extension being angular in cross-section forming a depending; flange, 17, around said corner portion of the bed-plate.

All portions of the apparatus over which the work is likely to pass as it leaves the machine is thus covered and protected by the guard, so that no oil can reach the work.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a suitable sup port; of a sewing-machine having a bedplate; hinges connecting the bed-plate along its rear side with said support, permitting the machine to be swung upward; an oilguard comprising a plate covering one of said hinges and overlapping'the bed-plate of the machine; and a hinge-connection between said plate and said support permitting said plate to be swung upward by the upward movement of said bed-plate.

2. The combination with a support; oi a sewing-machine having a bed-plate; hinges connecting the bed-plate along its rear side with said support, permitting the machine to be swung upward; an oil-guard comprising a plate covering one of said hinges, extending rearwardly thereof and overlapping said bed-plate; and a hingeconnection between said plate and said support in rear of the neighboring hinge-connection between said bed-plate and support.

A sewing-machine attachment comprising a guard-plate adapted to cover a hinge-connection between the rear portion of the bed-plate of a sewing machine and a support upon which said sewing-machine is mounted; a bracket having means whereby it can be attached to said support in rear of said hinge-connection, and a springhinge-connection between said bracket and said guard-plate.

l. The combination with a support; of a sewing-machine having a bed-plate; hinges connecting said bed-plate along its rear side with said support one of said hinges being substantially in the path of the work; a felt pad interposed between said support and a corner of the bed-plate adjacent to said hinge; an oilguardplate mounted upon said support covering said hinge and overlapping the bed-plate, said guard-plate having a lateral extension angular in cross section extending around the neighboring corner of said bed-plate; and a hinge-connection between the rear portion of said guard-plate and said support.
