WIRE-FENCE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. PATTER- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVinchester, in the county of Clark and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVire- Fence Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin drawings, and to the letters and figures 0 reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in woven wire fence stretchers, and consists of a simple device of this character having various details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showin the application of my invention to a fence.
Fig. 2 is a detail view of the stretcher removed from the fence, and
Fig. 8 is a view showing a means for taking up the slack in the fence when held by the stretcher.
' Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter:
A designates a handle having a slot B formed in one end. A plate C is seated in said slot and held therein by fastening means passed through registering apertures in the walls of the slot and said plate. It will be noted that said plate has serrations upon one end and which project, when the plate is fastened in place, beyond one edge and the end respectively of the handle. It will also be noted that the meeting of the Specification of Letters Patent.

teeth at the end and side have their points on the arc of a circle, so that the handle may be swung, so that the teeth will continue to grip the post at the end of the handle, as will be readily understood.
A claw bar D is pivotally mounted upon the pin E passed through apertures in the opposite walls of the handle and has a hooked end F for engagement with the fence to be stretched.
I11 Fig. 3 of the drawings I have shown a device for taking up the slack in the fence in the event of the latter being drawn taut over a hollow or hill in the ground in which there is a slack in one side or the other. This device K has a slot or claw L at one end adapted to engage the slack edge of the fence and when given a twist will draw the same taut.
The operation of my stretching device will be readily understood as the device is applied in the manner shown in the drawings. teeth upon the handle makes it possible to afford the device a continuous stretching action, as the handle is swung so that the teeth upon the side and end of the plate will engage a fence post.
What I claim to be new is:
A wire fence stretching device comprising a handle having an elongated slot in one end, a metallic member mounted in said slot and having its inner end seated against the end of the slot, the walls of the latter and said member having registering apertures, and fastening means passing through the apertures, one longitudinal edge of said member and an end projecting respectively beyond the longitudinal edge and end of the handle and serrated, the line of serrations about the end and corner being curved, a claw bar pivoted centrally to said handle adjacent to the inner end of said member.
