The present invention relates to turbine blade attachments.
The object of the invention'is to attach the blades insuch a manner that the packing sections which are undercut to fit circumferential projections on the sides of the groove can be inserted radially at any part of the groove. p I
Certain forms of packing section commonly used can be inserted and twisted into place in the manner described with reference to the blades in patent application No. 223626 filed March 20, 1918. In many cases, however, the shape of the section will not permit of this method of insertion.
The present invention consists in dividing such packing sections into two or more parts in sucha manner that the parts canbe inserted locally and twisted into place in the groove, the division of the section extending from one side of the groove to the other.
The invention further consists in the im proved means for attaching turbine blades hereinafter described.
According to the invention, the packing section is divided into two parts'by a division inclined at an angle to the sides ofthe groove, and the division of the packing section is such that in each part of the section the surfaces contiguous to the projections on opposite sides of the groove lie on opposite sides of some plane which is perpendicular to. the sides and bottomof the groove.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate various Ways of carrying the invention into efi'ectz- Figures 1 and 2 show one method of at-' tachment according to the invention;
Figs. 3 to 10 show various forms in which the packing sections are separate from the blades;
Figs. 11 to 17 show other modifications;
Figs. 18 and 19 show an alternative method of inserting the last packing section.

The dimensions of each part are such that the part can be inserted in the groove in a radial direction and then twisted into position in a clockwise direction; that is to say, the surfaces K H and L J of the part E, contiguous to the projections on opposite sides of the groove, lie respectively to the left and right of a radial plane represented by the line N N. The same applies to the part D with res met to the plane represented by the line This condition is necessar in each part D or E in order that it may e twisted lnto osition; if it were not fulfilled the diagonal L would be longer than the distance between the projections on the groove, and, in twisting, the corners Tl L would "accordingly jam against the projections. 'All the packing sections except the last can thus be inserted radially. The last. section may be made of the special form shown in Fig. 1 and in Fig. 2 which is a section on line A A of Fig. 1. The section is builtup of five parts inserted in the order 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, part 5, the last inserted, being secured in some suitable manner, as, for example, by a drivingfit or by calking the other parts over it, as in Fig. 17. 7 In the modification shown in Fig. 3 and in Fig. 4, Fig. 3 being a section on line B B of Fig. 4;, there are several notches in the packing sections engaging a corresponding number ofprojections on, the sides of the groove; an alternative form is also shown for the last packing section.
Fig. 5 and Fig. 6, Fig. 5 being a section on line C C of Fig. 6, show a further modification in which the division F G consists of two planes, and there are 'four piecesin the last packing section.
Another modification is illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 in which the division F G comprises three planes. These figures also show an alternative method of inserting the last packing section in which the section is not divided, but the projections are removed from the sides of the groove and the section is secured by two screws 0, P.
As indicated in Figs. 9 and 10, the di vision F, G may be so made that either or both of theparts D, E occupies the whole of the surface at one side of the groove. Also the packing sections and blades may be further secured by being threaded on short lengths of wire Q.
Figs. 11 and 12 show a construction in which each of the parts D of the packing sections is integral with the back; of the neighboring blade, whereas in the form illustrated in Figs. 13 and 14; it is the part E that is integral with the blade, the part D being separate.
The surfaces dividing the packing sec tions from each other or from the blades are not necessarily perpendicular to the bottom of the grooves; also if necessary corresponding notches and projections or serrations may be formed on the complementary parts.
Such a construction is illustrated in Figs. 15 and 16, in which the part E of the packing section is undercut to receive a projecttion on the part D, the latter being attached to the blade, as shown, or being separate.
According to the form shown in Fig. 17 serrations are similarly employed.
A further alternative method of inserting the last packing section is illustrated in Figs. 18 and 19. The section'is divided into four parts which are inserted in the order 1., 2, 3, 1, and are then secured by a screw S the shank of which is tapered so that the parts are firmly wedged in position, the four parts being then calked over the head of the screw. The screw S, being inserted after the four parts 1, 2, 3, 4.- really corre sponds to the piece 5 in Fig. l.
Any of the various known methods may be employed for the insertion of the last section; for example, the methods of inserting and holding the last section described in the patent application No. 223626 filed March 20, 1918, may be employed.
Although the division of the packing seetions into two parts only has been illustrated in some cases in which the circumferential pitch of the blades is great, a larger number than two will be necessary in order to enable the pieces to be passed between the projections on the sides of the grooves.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what We claim is 1. In turbine blade attachments comprising a circumferential containing groove, on the sides of which opposing circumferential projections are formed, packing sections divided into parts the dimensions of which will allow the parts to be separately inserted radially and twisted into position, the division extending from one side of the groove to the other.
2. In turbine blade attachments as claimed in claim 1, dividing the packingseetions in such a manner that in each part of a sec tion the total surfaces respectively contiguous to the opposite sidesand projections of the groove lie on opposite sides of some plane which is perpendicular to the sides and bottom of the groove.
3. Packing sections for turbine blade attachments constructed as. set forth in claims 1 and 2, in which the division between two parts terminates at both ends a finite dis tance from the adjacent blades.

5. Packing sections for turbine blade attachments constructed as set forth in claims 1 and 2, one of the parts of each section being attached to an adjacent blade.
6. In turbine blade attachments comprising acircumferential containing groove on the sides of which opposing circumferential projections are formed, packing sections between the blades within the grooves including a final packing section divided into a plurality of parts, some of which engage be low the projections on the sides of the grooves, and one of which is adapted to be inserted last, between at least two of the parts engaging below the said projections.
7. In turbine blade attachments a final packing section as set forth in claim 6 having the last inserted part contiguous to at least one of the adjoining blades.
