To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, \ViLLIAM T. DUNFORD, residing at 364 \Vest 117th street, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevator Safety Systems, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is an improved safety system for elevators, the general object being to provide a simple, compact and reliable construction and arrangement of parts on the car and at the several landings, whereby the car can be moved from a landing only in event of the door being locked. The invention more particularly comprises a construction and combination of parts enabling the door to be unlocked and the controller sinmltaneously rendered inoperative by a pedal on the car, and wherein the train of mechanism for locking the controller is mounted wholly on the car, thus permitting thc controller to be located in the most advantageous position, preferably at the side of the car, while. another train or branch transmits motion to a car contact by which the mechanism at each landing is operated to unlock the landing doors. The invention also comprises in such a construction means for engaging and'holding the car contact in its shifted position, thus holding the connected controller-locking mechanism against release. until the door in its closing movement disengages such means from the car contact. whereupon the car contact automatically returns to its original position. A further feature of the invention resides in the construction of the door-locking mechanism, whereby opening movement ol the doors is barred at two positions thereof, namely closed position and a position a predetermined distance therefrom, in conjunction with which provision means are provided whereby the detent for holding the car mechanism is released by the door as each locking position is reached. so that a quick start from the. landing can be effected, before the door has fully closed, without leaving the same in a condition permitting it lo be pushed open from the outside. The system is applicable to existing cars and controllers of different types. and other objects and features of the invention will be come apparent as the specification proceeds.

In an elevator safety system, a landing door, locking mechanism operative to hold the door against opening movement wheh closed and also when at a predatormined distance from closing, a contact con-- nected with said locking mechanism, mechanism on the car for rendering the car controller inoperative having connected therewith a contact to cooperate with the landing contact, and operators means for shifting said mechanisms so as to unlock the door and render the controller inoperative, in combination with a detent whereby the car mechanism is held in shifted position, and means whereby said car mechanism freed to restore control of the car to the operator when the landing door in closing reaches the first of its locking positions,

In an elevator safety system, a landing door, locking mechanism operative to hold the door against opening movement when closed and also when at a predetermined distance from closing, and a contact connected with said locking mechanism, in combination with a car controller, means on the car to lock the controller, a pedal on the car to operate coi'itroller lockin means, a car contact also connected with the pedal to operate the landing contact, a detent operative to hold said car contact in shifted position, and means wh reby the door retracts said dctent approximately when the first locking position is reached and again when approximately closed.
26, In an elevator safety system, a landing door, locking mechanism operative to hold the door against opening movement when closed and also when at a predeter mined distance from closing, a contact connccted with said locking mechanism, a cooperative contact on the car, controller locking mechanism also on the car, and an operators device on the car for operating both the caricontact and the controller loclc ing mechanism, in combination with detent at the landing for engagement with the car contact, and means whereby the door retracts said detent approximately when the first locking position is reached and again when approximately closed.
27. In an elevator safety system, the combination with a landing door, means for locking the same in two positions, a car having a controller, and mechanism on the car whereby the operator ma unlock the landing door and simultaneous y efi'ect looking of. the controller, in combination with a detent for holding the car mechanism in shifted condition, and members spaced correspondingly to the locking positions of the door and adapted to be engaged successively by a part on the door to retract the detent.

In an elevator safety system, the com bination with a landing door, means for locking the same in two positions, a car having a controller, and mechanism on the car whereby the operator maynnlock the landing door and simultaneously effect locking of the controller, in combination with two spaced pivoted elements arranged to be engaged successively by a part on the door and having a connection between them whereby one moves the other, one of said elements having means to engage and hold a part of the car mechanism in shifted position.

In an elevator safety hination with a landing locking the same in two positions, a car having a controller, and mechanism on the car whereby the operator may unlock the landing door and simultaneously effect locking of the controller, in combination with two spaced bell-crank elements connected by a link and adapted to be engaged successively by a part on the door, one of said elements having a portion to engage and hold a part of the car mechanism in shifted position.
30; In an elevator safety system, the combination with a landing door, means for locking the same in two positions, a car having a controller, and mechanism on the car whereby the operator may unlock the landing door and simultaneously effect looking of the controller, in combination with dctent mechanism comprising a portion adapted to engage a part of the car mocha nism to hold the same shifted, said portion having a beveled face to permit said part to latch by the same, and members connected with each other and adapted to be engaged successively by a part on the door to dis engage the detent portion.

In an elevator safety system, the combination with a landing door, means for locking the same in two positions, a car having a controller, and mechanism on the car whereby the operator may unlock the landing dooran'd simultaneously effect lock ing of the controller, in combination with system, the comdoor, means for detent mechanism comprising an element having a beveled member mounted rotatably thereon to engage behind a part of the car mecl'ianism and to permit the same to latch by it, and a second element spaced from and connected with the first, said elements being adapted to be engaged successively by a part on the door to disengage said beveled member from the part on the car.

In an elevator safety system, a landing door having a part projecting downward therefrom, a horizontally extending latch mounted on the face of the shaft to swing on a vertical axis and having locking lugs spaced lengthwise thereon to retain the part on the door, and horizontally spaced pivoted devices arranged to be engaged successively by said part, in combination with a car having a controller, and mechanism on the car for retracting the latch and simultancously rendering said controller inoperative, one of said pivoted devices being a detent adapted to engage and hold a part of said car mechanism in shifted position. a

In an elevator safety system, a landing door having a projection, a locking device having horizontally spaced lugs cooperative with said projection, a car having a control; ler, mechanism on the car for retracting said locking device and simultaneously render ing the controller inoperative, and detent means adapted to engage and hold a part of said car mechanism in shifted position and having portions arranged to be actuated successively by the door in closing to disengage the detent.

In an elevator safety system, a landing door having a part projecting therefrom, a locking device having longitudinally spaced locking portions cooperative wit said projection, mechanism on the car capable of actuation by the operator to retract said loc king device and simultaneously render the controller inoperative, and detent means on the landing adapted to enga e' and hold a part of said car mechanism in sliifted position and having. ortions arranged to be actuated successive y by said pro ecting door part in closing to disengage the detent.

In an elevator safety system, the combination with mechanism at a landing including a. contact, of a car having a controller lever, a contact on the car cooperativewith the landing contact, a rock member having a forked portion adapted to be' engaged by said lever to rock the member in one direction or the other according to the direction of movement of the lever, means connected with the car contact and adapted to engage said rock member to lock the same and the controller lever central, and means for holding said member against displacement in either direction when in its extreme positions. a

37. ln an elevator safety system, the combination with a controller lever, of a rock member adapted to be engaged and moved by the controller lever in one direction or the other according to the direction of movement of the lever, an element movable on said member under the control of the controllcr lever, and means cooperative with said element to hold the rock member against displacement in either direction in ea h of its rocked positions.

In an elevator safety system, the combination with a controller lever, of a rock member adapted to be engaged and moved by the controller lever in one direction or the other according to the direction of movement of the lever, an element mounted slidably on said rock member, stationary abntments adapted to coiiperate with said element to retain the rock member in each of its extreme positions, a 5 ring for urging said element to engage sai abutments, the slide beirig arranged to be disengaged therefrom by the action of the controller.
39. In an elevator safety system, the combination with a controller lever, of a rock member adapted to be engaged and moved by the controller lever in one direction or the other according to the direction of movement of the lever, means cooperative with said rock member to lock the controller lever in mid-position, and means for locking said member against displacement when in its extreme positions disengaged from the lever, the said means comprising, a spring-pressed element on said rock member, and cooperative means mounted on a. suitable stationary part, said element ongaging automatically with said cooperative means when the lever leaves the rock member and being disengaged by the latter in its return movement picks up the rock member.
40. In an elevator safety system, the combination with a landing door, a lock therefor, and a contact at the landing for re leasing said lock, of a car having a controller lever, means for locking said controller lever in neutral position, a contact on the car movable to actuate the landing contact, an operators device on the car, an connections whereby'said device 0 crates both the car contact means, said lever locking means being adapted to block actuation of said connections when the controller lever is out of neutral position, and said connections including a the lever when and 'ti le jlever coking normally substantially rigid spring adapted to yield in event of operation of the operators device when the connections are blocked.

In an elevator safet system, the COIll bination with a landing nor, a lock there for, an elevator car having a controller lever, and a lock for said lever, of a pedal on the car for releasing the door lock and applying the lever lock, said pedal having a plunger composed of parts movable relatively to each other, and a normally substantially rigid spring confined as a connection between said parts.

In an elevator safety system, comprising suitable mechanism on a car, a pedal for operating said mechanism having, in combination with a lower part, a removable upper part comprising a foot piece, a spring, and a member secured to the footpiece and cooperating therewith to confine the spring to the foot piece, said spring being arranged to be compressed be tween the foot-piece and the lower part by pressure applied to the former.
43. In an elevator safetv system, the combination with a door at a anding and a controller in the car, of means for locking the door when Within a predetermined distance of closing, means for locking the controller, foot-operated mechanism 'on the car for unlocking the door lock and locking the controller lock, and means whereby the door in closing unlocks the controller approximately at such predetermined distance.
44. In an elevator safety system, the combination of a door at .a landing, means for locking the door in closed position and at a predetermined distance from closing, a controller in the car, means for locking the controller, and mechanism partly on the car and partly at the landing and including an operating pedal on the car whereby the con troller is locked when the door is unlocked and vice-versa.
