To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. DAVIS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Chiuseful Improvement in Mining-Machines, of
"H. of Fig. 1.
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mining machines and has for its object to provide a new andimprovedmachine of this description. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein1 Figure l is a plan View of a mining machine embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the machin shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 14 of Fig. 3.
Like numerals refer to like out the several figures.
This application is a division of my rior application, Serial No. 585,549, filed ctober 6, 1910. The mining machine herein shown is of a type having a forwardly projecting cutter arm 1 provided with an endless cutter chain 2 which passes around a parts throughsprocket wheel 3 at the front end of the cut-' motor 5. The cutter arm is fixed with relation to the frame carrying the motor and the entire machine is moved during the cutting safety device shown in the drawing 1s proprocess. The entire machine is first moved longitudinally so as to make the first cut or entry into the coal and is then moved laterally along the face of the coal. In the device shown, the machine is fed by means of a flexible power transmitting device 6 which passes over a drum 7 operated by the motor and which is connected to a stationary part. \Vhcn it is desired to make the first'cut or entry into the coal, the machine is in the position shown in Fig. 1, and the power transmitting device 6 is connectedJto a stationary part 8 arranged in such position as cutters of the chain engaging the coal also tend to produce a lateral movement of the cutter arm. In order to prevent this lateral movementfl provide the cutter arm with two guides 9 and 10. Between these guides is provided a guiding device having a guiding part 11 and a shoe 12. The guiding part-11 is provided with means for fixing it in position, such as for example, the jack 13, which is adapted to be brought into engagement with the face of the coal or other stationary part. It will thus be, seen that when the 'ack is tightened, the guidingpart 11 is held rigidly in position, the shoe 12 engaging the ground or floor. The machine can then be moved forward but will be held against lateral movement. When a machine 0 this type as ordinarily constructed is first started in its forward cut, practically the entire cutter chain is exposed so as to en- ;danger anyone near the machine. It has also been found that as the machine is started into the coal, it often strikes a hard spot and is thrown entirely away from the face the operator or any other person near the machine. Since the cutter arm is rigid with the frame of themachine and is pushed forward into the coal, it will be seen that any guard used must be one which will gradually move out of the way as the cutter arm enters the coal. The particular form of guard or back into the frame as the. cutter chain is moved forward, the guard finally taking the position as shown in Fig. 3. As herein shown, the cross bar 16 is provided with a suitable opening'for the guiding part 11 attached to the shoe 12. Some-means is preferably rovided for holding the guard frame in its all extended positionwhile the machine is being moved about. As herein a shown, the 'guidin part 11 which has a part passing through t e hole of the cross bar 16 is provided with a pivoted latch 18 adapted to engage the cutter arm so as to lock the guiding frame and cutter arm together when desired; The latch 18 is provided with an upwardly turned end 19, and the jack has a beveled face 20 which engages the upturned end 19 so as to move the latch 18 to automatically disengage the parts, when'the jack 13 is placed in position. In operating the device, the jack 13 is placed in position and its end brought into contact with the roof or side wall or some other fixed point and the jack tightenedso as to hold the cutter frame against lateral movement. The machine is again started and the entire machine is moved forward, the cutter chain engaging the coal and gradually cutting it away so that the cutter chain and cross bar project into the coal. The guard being fastened to the fixed shoe is held against forward movement and gradually slides along the guides 17 back into the frame of the machine to the position shown in Fig. 3. WVhen the full forward movement is completed, the jack 13 is removed and the shoe 12 placed upon the support or base 21 of the machine as shown in Fig. 3. It will be seen that by means of this device, the cutter chain is properly guarded while the cutters are exposed, so as to prevent injury to anyone near the machine. The downwardly projecting parts of the side pieces prevent the cutters from striking the operator or any other person even if he should lean against said side pieces. It will be noted that in the present case, there is a moving member with a cut-- ting device mounted on said moving member and a power device mounted thereon, and that the guard for the cutting device is. also mounted on said moving member, there being means for removing said guard from the cutting device progressively as the cutting device enters the substance beingcut.
