To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, reslding at lVarren, in the 'county of lVarrenand State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Camera, of which the following is a specification.

ith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the'com-r bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of constructlon hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made withinthe scope of what is claimed, without de-. parting from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the, improved 1 camera, with the side doors and focusing windows in open'position.

I I I In carrying out the invention, the body or frame of the camera comprises a rectangular case or box 1 of suit-able size and material, which will be described as being upright, althoughit can be used in other positions. This case 1 is provided between its upper and lower ends and adjacent the front thereof with a horizontal partition 2, separating the upper and lower camera sections, and said case is provided therein above and below the partition 2 with cleats 3 to which the rear ends of the upper and lower bellows 4: and j 5, respectively, are attached. The shutters of lenses L can be operated simultaneously by any desired means R; The case 1 is provided therein adjacent the back thereof and in rear of the upper and lower camera sections, with the magazine chamber 10 and combined magazine and transferring chamber 11, adj acent the upper and lower ends of the case, respectively, and separated by a partition or shelf 12 of sheet metal or other suitable material disposed horizontally in rear of the partition 2. The back 13 of the case is removable, the same being attached to the means. The back 13 is provided in rear of the chambers 10 and 11 with suitable lights r tight spring-actuated focusing windows 15 and 16 of any suitable size.
Oneside, preferably the right side, of the case 1 is provided with an opening 27 extending from the top of the case to the bottom thereof and located adjacent the back 13, and upper and lower doors 28 and 29,
respectively, are hinged to the back 13, forming a light-tight joint with the back 13 and with the adjacent edges of the case to close the opening 27. The doors 28-29 can be held closedby latches 30 carried by the case 1.
Movable backwardly and forwardly with- Each of the holders 33 embodies abacking 34: constructed of suitable opaque material,
having its margin attached in any suitable manner to the rear side of a rectangular frame 35.
The chamber 10 is adapted to receive a plurality of the holders 33 one behind the other, with the partition 12 supporting said holders, and the chamber 11. is also adapted to accommodate said holders for backward and forward movement. The right hand ends of the holders are provided with consecutive numerals or indexes a l, visible through windows 1 1 in the doors 28 29, and the ends of the holders are further provided with finger holds 45 to facilitate the insertion and removal of said holders. The upper edges of the holders 33 are provided with forwardly facing bevels lb, while the lower edges thereof have rearwardly facing bevels 4C7, to facilitate the movement of the holders from one chamber to the other of the case 1. The upper pieces or edges of the holders are provided midway between the ends thereof with sockets or recesses as, and the lower pieces or edges of the holders are provided midway between the ends thereof with similar sockets or recesses 419.
The forward edge of the partition 12 is spaced slightly from the rear edge of the partition 2, to define a transverse slot :31 (Fig. 2) through which the holders 33 are movable downwardly from the forward portion of the chamber 10 into the forward portion of the chamber 11, and the rear edge of the partition 12 is spaced from a eleat 51 at the back 13 to provide a transverse slot 51 through which the holders are movable upwardly from the rear portion of the chamber 11 into the rear portion of the chamber 10, thus providing for the circuitous movement of the plate holders. In order to normally close the slots 51-51, to prevent the passage of light between the chambers 10-11, a. shutter 52, constructed of sheet metal or other suitable material, is connected byany suitable spring hinge to the forward edge of the partition or shelf 12 and swings up into alinement with the partition 2, and a similar shutter hinged to the eleat to swin down and close the slot 51. That end or the parti tion 12 opposite to the opening 27 is bent and secured as at 4126 in any suitable maner to the corresponding side wall of the casing and the other end is supported by arod 55 carried by the casing and extending across the door opening 27. The partition 12 and rod extend between the doors 29 to prevent light escaping past the partition. The shutters 52 and 53 can readily swing open downwardly and upwardly when the holders 53 are moved past them, and swing shut automatically when the holders have passed.
The case 1 is provided at the forward portions of the chambers 10 and 11 with cleats or shoulders 50 providing stops against which the holders 33 are adapted to bear by a forward movement, and along which the holders are slidable downwardly from the chamber 10 into the chamber 11.
Disposed Within the chamber 11 is a focus ing screen 7 0 carried by a frame (39 having an upper reverse bevel 125, said screen being preferably constructed of celluloid, which is light and strong, so as not to be easily breakable nor heavy as glass, although any suitable screen isused. A similar screen having a frame 69 is provided within the chamber 10 in rear of the holders As a means for moving the holders 33 and the screens forwardly in the chambers 1011, presser or follower members 71 and 72 are carried by the back 13 in rear of the respective chambers 10 and 11, and said members are of practically duplicate construction, each being of U-shape, and being accommodated and receivable in a U shaped recess 73 with which the back is provided. The intermediate portion ofeach of said follower members is mounted for rotation in bearings 74: carried by the back 13, and springs 75 connect each follower member and the back so as to tend" to swing the arms of said member forwardly. The follower members can be held in inoperative positions within the recesses 73 by means of latches 7 6' carried by the back 13, but when the latches are released", the members 71 and 72 swing forwardly, and the ends of their arms bear against the side portions of the rear most holders against the frames 69-69 of the screens. Thus, the follower members in swinging forwardly press, when free to do so, the foremost carriers or the screens or against the cleats or stops 50. Suitable slots 76*" are provided in the rear surfaces of pright screen frames 6969 in which the free ends of the follower members 71-72 move, thereby holding the screens securely against transverse movement while withdrawing plate or film holders from chambers. The follower member 72 is provided with a lever 17 within a recess 18 in the case to retract or manually move the member 72, the lever 17 being held by a ratchet 1-9.
The device for transferring the holders or carriers within the chamber 11, embodies an inverted U-shaped follower member 76 carried for oscillatory movement by the cleat 50 of the chamber 11 and. movable out of the way into a groove '77 in the said cleat 50. Springs 78 tend to swing the arms of the member 76 rearwardly, and said member has an operating lever 79 extending through a slot 80 in a segment plate 81 set in a recess 82 in the case, in which recess the lever or arm 79' works. The segment plate 81 and the lever 79 have suitable cooperating elements 83- for: holding the lever 79, with the member'TG retracted or moved rearwardly. hena holder 33: is moved downwardly through the slot 51, the holder passes in front of the screen frame 69 behind the follower 76, and is pressed by the screen frame 69 against the cleat 50 in the chamber 11 due to thepressure of the follower 72 against the screen frame. After exposure of the plate in holder 33, the follower member 7 2 is retracted by the lever 17, and the member 76 is then released by the lever 79. The springs 7 8 then move the member 7 6 rearwardly, pushing the holder 33 and frame 69 ahead of member 7 (3 until the frame (39 moves to rest against: the back 13. This operation retains the plate holder 33in position to be moved upthrough the slot 51'.
Then by retracting the member 76 and releasing the member 72 the screen frame 69 is again brought against the cleat 50 in the chamber 11.
In order to facilitate the movement of the holders 33 from one chamber to the other, the bottom or lower end of the case 1 has an apertured guide member 89 below the slot 51, and adjacent the back 13, and the top or upper end of the case has a similar apertured guide member 90 above the slot 51 adjacent the forward portion of the chamber 10. The apertures of the members 89-9O are nor mally closed by inner flaps or closures 92 91, respectively, which normally swing to closed-position, but which are yieldable so as to be swung out of the way by a rod 93 insertible into the guide members. This rod 93 is provided at one end with a knob or finger piece 94 to facilitate the manipulation V of the rod. When the rod 93 is inserted through the upper guide member 90, the foremost holder 33 in the chamber 10 can be pushed downwardly into the chamber 11,

In preparing the camera for taking a series of pictures, a stack of holders 33 c011- taining sensitized plates are deposited inthe magazine chamber 10, this of course being done under a ruby light or in a dark room, and the screen is disposed in the chamber 10 in rear of the holders 33. Screen 70 is moved by the follower member '72 to the normal focusing plane, which will be subsequently occupied by the sensitized surface of the plate contained in the first holder 33 in magazine 10. Then, by opening the lower focusing window, the proper focus can be obtained, by adjusting the lower lens. After the lower window'is closed, the rod 93 is inserted through the guide member and is pushed downwardly, the lower end of wedges between the screen frame 69and the cleats 50 and member 7 6, forcing said frame 69 rearwardly against the forward tension of the arms 78. Consequently, the holder is moved between the cleats 50 and frame 69, the focusing screen 70 being moved rearwardly from the focus plane, and the sensitized surface ofthe holder 33 being moved into the position previously 'occupied'by the screen 70. After, the exposure has been made, the exposed holder 33 can be transferred back into the magazine chamber 10 at the rear of the unexposed holders 33 or inthe rear of the screen 70. This is accomplished by releasing the member 76 as above described. lVhen. the frame 69 is moved rearwardly against the back 13, the exposed holder 33 is in position to be moved back upwardly into the chamber 10. The rod 93 which was previously withdrawn from the guide member 90 after the holder was moved downwardly into the chamber 11, as above described, is now inserted upwardly through the guide member 89, the end of the rod 93 engaging the lower recess 19 of the exposed holder, and when said rod is moved upwardly, the holder will be forced from the chamber 11 back up into the chamber 10, the shutter 53 opening automatically, whereby to permit the holder to move throughthe slot 51. When the holder is returned to the chamber 10, it wedges between the follower member 71 and the screen frame 69 or rearmost holder 33 and when the exposed holder is moved completely into the chamber 10, the follower and a transferring chamber, camera sec-- tions for the two chambers, a focusing screen in the transferring chamber movable into and out of focusing position, and a plurality of holders for sensitized members within the magazine chamber, the foremost holder being in focusing position and be ing movable into focusing position in the transferring chamber.

A camera embodying a case having magazine and transferring chambers and hers in front therof, plurality of holders for sensitized members in the magazine chamber, the foremost holder being movable from the magazine chamber into the transferring chamber, and means operable within the transferring chamber for moving the holder rear vardly, the holder when moved rearwardly within the transferring chamber being me *able back into the magazine chamber.

A camera embodying a case having magazine and transferring chambers and a partition therebetween, a camera section for the transferring chamber, a focusing screen in the t'ansferring chamber, a plurality of holders for sensitized members in the magazine cl amber, the foremost holder in the magazine chamber being movable into the trail-referring chamber and when moved rearwardly in the transferring chamber being mo able back into the magazine chamber.

A 321116 a embodying a case having magazine and transferring chamber. and a lartition therebetween, a camera section for the transferring chamber, a focusing screen movable forwardly and rear vardly in the trzmsferring chamber, a plurality of holders for sensitized members in the magazine chamber, the foremost holder in the magazine chamber being movable into the trans ferring chamber, the holder when moved rearwardly in the transferring chamber being movable back into the magazine chamber, and a manually operable rock shaft carried by the case in front of said transferring chamber and having arms whose free ends are engageablewith the for ising screen and holder in front of the same, respectively, whereby said arms can be swung for moving the screen and holder rearwardly, the holders and screen having coiiperable means whereby a holder when moved from the magiziue chamber into the transferring chamber will move in front of the focusing screen and in rear of said arms.
