Be it known that I, FREDERICK C.' WARNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk Harrows, of` which the following is a Specification.
My yinvention relates to improvements in disk harrows, and more particularly to that class ort'ype known as double or tan' dem disk harrows, in which front and rear units are employed, each unitk embodying a pair of adjustably mounted vrotary disk gangs adapted vto be angled or turned in opposite directions .relative to each other and to the line of draft, as disclosed for example in Patent No. 1,189,890, of July 4th,

The improved barrow or tillage implement comprises a. front harrow section or unit and a rear or trailing harrow section or unit. The front and rear harrow sections may be of any suitable and conventional form, and for the purposes of illustration l have shown my improved draft appliance and its connections applied to or embodied in a double or tandem disk'harrow of the general form of that disclosed in my former patent hereinbefore referred to- The front harrow. section or unit is provided with` a suitable draft frame consisting, in the present instance, of a transversebar 1, and a curved draft frame member 2, the
latter having its forward middle 'portion secured to a stub-pole 3, which latter isl made up of spaced angle bars secured at their rear to the transverse bar` or member-1, and, in the present instance, forming a guide or slideway for the improved longitudinally movable draft appliance hereinafter described. ,Y
As a means of connecting the draft frame to the front disk gangs 4, draft bars or links 5, are pivotally connected to filler blocks 2, said draft bars extending rearwardly beneath the transverse bar 1, and being flexibly connectedto the axle boxes 6, somewhat beyond the centers of the disk. gangs, so that the inner ends of the latter will have a tendency to swing rearwardly and assume a rearwardly converging position. As a means of supporting and maintaining the draft bars 5, in proper horizontal relation to the transverse bar l, supporting clips 7, are pivotally mounted upon the filler blocks 2, and are secured by means of pivot bolts 5a, secured to the forward ends of the draft bars 5, said clips A7, extending rearwardly and being secured to the top intermediate portions of the bars 5, by means of pivot bolts 7, and as a further means of seeuringthe draft frame to the front disk gangs draft bars or links 8, are connected by the pivot vbolts 5a, above f the supporrtingclips 7 and extend upwardly and rearwardly and are flexibly connected' to the upper or transverse bars 9, of the front gang frames by means of pivot bolts 9a. The gang frame bars 9, are connected to the-disk gangs 4, by means of supporting' bracket or brace members 9", extending downwardly and suitably secured to the axle boxes 9. v The rear harrow section or unit, in the present instance, comprises a pair of rear disk gangs 10, suitably mounted and supported in gang frames 11, the latter beingv provided with supporting brackets 11, connected to 'axle boxes 12.
The rear disk gangs 10, in the present instance, are pivotally connected and held in proper spaced relation at all times by means of a transversely extending rear flja'ii forming a rear harrow frame 13, provided at its ends with pivot bearing bolts 14, suitably connected to the rear gang frames 11, of the rear gangs. It will be observed that the pivot or swivel bolts 14, are located beyond the centers of the rear gang frames, so that the inner ends of the rear gangs, if left unsupported' or free, will have a tendency to swing rearwardly and away from their normal forwardly converging working position,

' Referring now to the improved draft ap- -pliance and its gang connecting, adjusting and controlling mechanism, whereby the op- .erator of the tractor, while in his usual driv- 'ing position on the latter, and when the disk gangs are locked in their normal or fully .angled positions, or in intermediate angled positions, and are relatively released oriunlocked while the tractor is in motion, will permit such gangs to automatical'l assume,
through such draft connections t eir nonworking non-angled transporting position, or various angular working positions, as the case may be, and as the operator may elect, and whereby the same may be stopped and locked in any such elected positions, it'will be seen that the improved draft appliance comprises a longitudinally movable draft member or element, mounted, in the present instance, in the stub-pole 3, of the draft frame, and consistin in the present instance, of a draft bloc or head 17, adapted to slide along the angular members of the stub-pole 3, said block 17 being controlled by a longitudinally movable draft bar vor yoke 18, terminating at its forward end in a draft loop 18a. The draft loop 18, is adapted to ybe attached to the tractor, and as a means of operating and controlling the movements of the draft bar or yoke 18, and draft head 17, and the connections leading from the latter to the disk gangs, as hereinafter described, one side of the draft bar or yoke 18, is provided with a toothed rack 18", and as a means ofV enabling the operator to readily move the draft block or head 17, and its attachments, together with the stub. pole 3, and its attachments, `relative to'eacli other, an operating hand lever 19, is piv-k otally mounted on the stub-pole 3, through said hand lever extending upwardly through a suitable guide bracket or segment 20, and
within ready reach of the operator of the tractor.
Asa meansl of intermittentl 'engaging and lfeeding the draft bar or yo e'18, rearwardly through working impulses imparted to the hand lever'19, the lower portion of the latter is provided with'a pivoted pawl 21, adapted to be moved to a released position by means of a rod 22, leadin to afreleasing lever 23, at the handle portion of the hand lever 19.
As a means of preventing any shifting or retrograde movement of the draft bar 19, and toothed rackV 18", after each working impulse given to the'hand lever 19,`the stub-pole 3, 1s provided' at one side with a pivoted locking dog 24, the latter being provided with a detent 24, adapted to normally ride upon the teeth ofA the rack 18", and as a means of simultaneously releasing the pivoted pawl 21, and locking dog 24,
and holding such parts in such released position for the extended shifting or forward movement of the draft yoke 18. and its attachments, by the 'forward draft of thetractor, the locking dog 24, is provided with .an overhanging ledge or projection 24", so that when the free end of the pivoted pawl 21 is moved in an extended upward direction it will enga e with the overhanging ledge 24", and raise and hold the locking dog 24, out of engagement, as shown in Fig. 7, ofthe drawings. i
As a means of permitting a limited movement between the draft bar or yoke 18,.and the draft block or head 17, the upper and lower plates of the'draft block are connected by means of vertical bolts 17, surrounded by spaced sleeves or spools 17", the latter being permitted to slide o`r travel in the slot or guideway 18, formed bythe spaced sides ofthe draft yoke 18, and it is obvious that this slotted arrangement between the bar or yoke 18, and the rear sleeve or spool 17", of the draft block will permit the draft bar 18, when the implement is in the position shown in Fi 1, or when detached, or when the tractor 1s| slackened, to be moved rearwardly from'the osition shown in Fig. 1, to that indicated 1n Figs. 3 and 4, without moving the draft block 17, and its connections, so that when the disk barrow is attached or moved forwardly the disk gangs will assume a predetermined angular position, in accordance with the position given to the draft bar or yoke 18. It will be seen that 'the connections of the draft links 25", with the links 28, and the connections of the latter, with the equalizing bar 27, and the ivoted connections of such equalizing bar 2 with the forwardly converging reach bars 26, are arrangedat points equally distant from the longitudinal center of the harrow or the line of draft thereof.

'slidably receive and contain horizontally extending guide straps 31, suitably secured to the inner ends of the rear gang frames.
From the foregoing description, taken in. connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages, of my invention will be readily understood. yHaving thus described one ofthe embodiments of Vmy invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In 'a tillage implement, the combination with front and rear frame units each provided with longitudinally fixed and movable draft connections; of 'a hand lever 110 mg mechanism for engaging and moving vsaid movable draft connections, said mechanismincluding a linoyjable draft yoke and a slidable block connected to said movable draft connections.
3. In a tillage implement, a plurality of frame units and tillage gangs, longitudinally fixed and movable draft members 130 j flexiblylconnected to said frame units and gangs, and a fixed draftelement connected 'to one frame unit and to the fixed draft members of the other at points equally disframe units and tillage gangs, longitudinall fixed and movable draft members flexibly connected to said frame units and gangs, and a fixed reach bar -connected to some of said fixed draft members and guiding said movable draft 'members at points equally distant from the line of draft.`
5. In a tractor drawn tandem tillage implement, front and rear frame units includjin-g pivoted tillage gangs and anti-tilting devices,relatively fixed and movable draft members flexibly connected to said frame units and said gangs for angularly adjusting said gangs relative to each otherand and movable draft members, respectively.

In a tillage implement, flexibly connected tandem frame units, draft 'connections including :if-.fixed guide member between said frame units movable relatively to eachother and o erable in one ldirection by the forward dra t of the tractor'for relatively adjusting said frame units, and lever actuated mechanism between'said draft connections for manually adjusting said `draft connections in an opposite direction.

In a tractor drawn tandem tillage implement, front and rear frame units including pivoted tillage gangs, relatively fixed and movable draft bars and reach members flexibly connected to said frame units and to the inner and intermediate portions of said gangs including a longitudinally movable draft appliance operable by the implement drawing tractive force of the tractor for adjusting said fra-me units and gangs relative to each other, a' fixed draft member connected to some of said fixed draft members and guiding said movable draft members intermediate said frame units and tillage gangs, and lever actuated means on said front frame unit for actuating, adjusting and locking said fixed and movable draft members and frame units relative to each other.
