7 Application iiled lune 11,
Be it known that I, CHARLns B. SPRAGUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Resawing- Machines, of which the following is a specification. I 2
My invention relates to a 'rc-sawing machine and the object is to provide a machine of this character which can be quickly and easily set for cutting various thicknesses of lumber from slabs, cants and boards as they come to-the machine, -The object more specifically stated is 'to provide a machine in which the sawing mechanism can be raised by fluid pressure to provide for adjustments for the various thicknesses of cut. 2
The full objects and advantages of my invention willappearinconnection with the detailed description thereof and are particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to thedrawings, Figure 1 is a {front sectionalelevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken at right angles to Fig. 1.
i Fi 3 is a horizontal section on line 33 1O designates the-base of the machine, which is secured by bolts 12 to a suitable supporting structure or framework 14.
Bolted to the base are a pair of standards 16 and 18 to the upper ends of which is secured a plate 20 which serves as a support for the upper stretch of an endless feeding belt consistingof slats 22 which travel over wheels 24 and 26. These wheels are secured to shafts 28 and 30 respectively, mountedin i journals in brackets 33 and 35 which are secured to the standards 16 and 18. Secured to the shaft 30 is a sprocketwheel 32 V which is driven by a sprocket chain 34. v
Mounted on theframework 14 is a cylinder 36within which is a piston v38 secured to the'lower end of a piston rod 40 which extends .upwardly through a gland 42. To
' the upper end of the piston rod is secured asliding guide 44 engaging with} a fixed.
56 to which'are pivoted links 58 the other ends of which are pivoted to a sliding frame which embodies two end members 60 shaped to slide in dove-tailed channels in the inner sides of the standards 16 and 18, as best shown in Fig. 3, and a cross beam 62 having ,a dependent lug 64 for a purpose which will presently appear. Secured to the sliding members 60 and extending between them are a pair of horizontal beams 66 and 68 upon which are journals for shafts 70 and I 72. Secured to these shafts are wheels 74 having press rolls 88 and feeding chains 90, the latter being driven in the usual way by a belt 92 running over a pulley 94. r
The sliding frame is raised by admitting steam or compressed air into the cylinder through the inlet pipe 96 and the admission port 98. An outlet pipe 100 and exhaust port 102 are provided for the escape of steam or compressed air. The two ports are controlled by a sliding valve 104 which is of slightly greater length than the distance between the two ports, so that it may entirely cover both of them when desired. The valve 104 is attached to a rod 106 and is normally held down in a chamber 108 by a spring 110. The upper end of the rod is pivotally connected to a lever 112 which is end of the bell-crank is extended to form a handle 122 which cooperates with a notched segment 124 in the usualmanner. Upon moving the handle 122 forwardly the valve 104 will be lifted and steam or compressed air admitted at the bottom ofthe cylinder to raise the piston, thereby lifting thesliding frame which carries the band-saw 78 and the overhead feeding device 86. The cylinder is provided with an air outlet opening 126 toward its u per end. When the piston is moved over tiiis opening, the air in the upper part of the cylinder is imprisoned and an air cushion formed to check the upward movement of the piston. When the R '10 DIAMOND mo! pivotedat 114 to the framework. The other end of the lever is pivotally connected to a 2 ,ww e,
ent lug 6 1 previously referred .to. Arranged for cooperation with this lug is a stepped slide 128 which maybe moved under the lug in order to bring the particus ment by the lug when the sliding frame descends. The slide 128 is operated by means of a link 130 which connects it to a bellcrank 132 pivotedtothe base. 'The other end of the bell-crank' is pivotally attached to a connecting rod 134, the upper end of which is pivoted to a lever 136. The upper end of this lever is extended to form a handle 138 which cooperates with a notched segment 1 10 in the usual way. By operating the handle 138 a particular step of the slide 128 corresponding to the desired thickness of the piece to be cut from the bottom of a slab 140 is positioned under thelug 64:. After this hasbeen done, the valve 104i is lowered to permit the steam or compressed air to escape from the exhaust port 102 and c the sliding frame descends by gravity to the predetermined position. The descent of the frame may be regulated by manipulation of the handle 122 so as to either uncover only a portion of the exhaust port or so as to alternately'uncover and close this port.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be obvious from the foregoing description. Various thicknesses of lumber as desired maybe cut from slabs or timbers.
The proper adjustment is easily and quickly made by simple manlpulation of levers Wlbllin easy reach of the operator. The sliding frame carrying the band-saw and the overhead feed is lifted by steam or compressed air power to a height sufficient to permit of any desired adjustment and the frame descends by its own weight to the selected position.
claim: 1. A re-sawing machine comprising a horizontal band-saw, means for lifting said saw by fluid pressure, and means for selecti l ntrolling the position to which said saw is permitted to descendwhen the fluid pressure is relieved.
2. A ire-sawing machine comprising a horizontal band-saw, a sliding frame on which said saw is supported, means for lifting said frame to its full height by fluid pressure, and means for selectively controlling the position to which said frame is permitted to descend when the fluid pressure is relieved. 1
3.'A re-sawing machine comprising a horizontal band-saw, a sliding frame on which said saw is supported, means for 'bring any one of its steps into position for lar step desired into position for engageengagement by said stop upon descent of SitlCl' frame.
4'. A re-sawing" machine comprising a horizontal band-saw, a sliding frame on which said saw is supported, means for lift-.
ing said frame to its full height by fluid pressure, a stop on said frame, a stepped slide, a lever within easy reach of the operator, and connections between said lever and said slide whereby any one of the steps of the latter may be brought into position for i hi easy reach ofthe operator, means controlled by one of said levers for lifting said frame by fluid pressure, and means op erated by the other of saidlevers for selectively controlling the position to which said frame is permitted to descend when the fluid pressure is relieved. p
6. A re-sawing machine comprisin a base, standards rising from said base, a bottom feeding device mounted on said standards, the latter beingprovided with vertical slide ways, a sliding frame having members for sliding in said slide ways, a horizontal band-saw mounted on said frame, an
overhead feeding device on said frame, means for lifting said frame by fluid pressure, and means for selectively controlling the position to which said frame is permit ted to descend when the fluid pressure is relieved.
7. A re-sawing machine. comprising a base," standards rising from said base, said standards beingprovided with vertical'slideways, a sliding frame havingmembers for Slldlllg in sa d slide-ways, a horizontal band saw mounted on said frame, two levers within easy reach of the operator, means controlled by one of said levers for lifting said frame by fluid pressure, a stop on said frame, a stepped slide, and connections be tweenthe other one of said levers and said slide whereby anyone of the steps of the latter may be brought into position for engage ment by said stop upon descent of said frame when the fluid pressure is released.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my CHARLES B. SPRAGUE.
