REGINALD REYNOLDS, or fRIvERsInE, .coimiac'rxcn'ni "TH EAD PACKAGE on HOLDER.
; p a f Lemma. Patented Julie 22,1920.
Application filed March 1, mo. Serial No. 362,237.
To all whom it may concern? Be it known that I, REGINALD RnYNoLDs, a citizen of the United States of America,
cation. f a v My invention relates particularly; to an improved means for packaging thread, yarn,
silk, floss or the like in short lengths. The
'term thread will be used herein forconvenience asapplying to either yarn, silk, cotton,
linen, leather or other similar strands for various purposes. 7
The main object is to providea simple and inexpensive form of package in which j designed as to facilitate wrapping the thread and sealing the package without danger of misplacing the thread or getting glue or paste on the thread and at a minimum expense.
Figure 1 shows the preferred form of blank for making my improved package.
Fig. 2 shows the first step in wrapping the thread in the blank.
Fig. 3 shows the second step in wrapping the thread in the blank. I
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the plane of the line 4.4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a sectional View of the finished package.
Fig. 6 shows a slightly different form of blank with the thread in place ready to be wrapped.
is adapted to be folded. The 13 are looped about theend of the extension 11,.as
shown iIiFig. 2. The-portion letof the blank serves to holdthe ends of the thread in place when folded as shown on the dotted li11esof ,Fig. 2. These portions 11 and 14 are separated preferablyby' a slot, notch or thread: passage 15 in the edge of the blank which forconvenience in operation is made inclined, asshown. I I The main body of the blank is preferabl made up of three longitudinal strips .16, 1; and 18, which are adapted tobe folded relative to each other along the lines 19 and 20. To facilitate this folding the. blank may be creased orv indented." Preferably, the
body of theblank is made long enough so that the end 21 will cover the loop of the thread when the package is @finished. The edge of the blank is preferably gummed along the edge 22 or provided with paste or other suitable adhesive.
In making up a package, the threadis first looped about the extension 11 which is folded over as shown in Fig. 2. The covering flap 14 is then folded over as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2 so as to loosely hold the ends of the thread in position. The blank is then folded along the line 19 so that the portion 17 will gather up any stray threads and bunch them together. neatly. The blank is then folded on the line 20 so that the portion 18 with the adhesive strip 22 will be brought over on to the opposite side of the package where .In this case the blank 10' has a neck or extension 11' about which the threads are looped anda' cover flap 14' separated from the portion 11 by the notch .or slit 15'.
. When this package is completed, a portion 13 ofthe thread is left displayed at one end. In this form, individual threads may be withdrawn from eitherend of the package, whereas .in the form shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, the threads can be withdrawn only from the cut end of the thread.
The material from which the wrapper is made is preferably paper which is more or less stifi so as to offer the necessary resistance to the pulling of the threads from the package. The form of package shown in Figs. 1 to 5, is particularly adaptedto be put up oil her by hand with unskilled labor,
or by machine, and the resulting package is not only neat in appearance, but adequately protects the thread and provides a convenient means for shipping, display, and sale, as well as for convenient use.
1'. A thread package comprising a wrapper havinga transverse slot in one longitudinal edge intermediate its ends for dividing said edge into an extension member and a cover flap, a bundle of threads looped over said e'xtenfsionmember at one end and extending to the other end past the cover flap, said extension member when folded once upon said wrapper inclos'ing half of the threads which are in engagement with the extension member, said'cover flap when folded once upon said wrapper lIlOlQSlIlg all the threads which are in engagement with the flap, sa d exten lon' member and cover flap being folded a second time onto said wrapper for inclosing the threads not covered by the extension member, said folded parts being folded again on said wrapper and secured thereto. 7 a e 2. Inthe combination set forth in claim 1, said extension member being spaced from one end of the wrapper so that the looped over threads in engagement with the extension member will not project beyond the end of the package.
3. A thread package comprising a Wrapper, an extension member extending from one longitudinal side thereof, a cover fiap extending from the same side of said wrapper and located adjacent said extension member, a bundle of threads looped over said extension member at one end and extending past said cover flap, said extension member'when folded once on said wrapper 'inclosing half of the threads which are in engagement with the extension member, said'cover flap when folded once on said wrapper inclosing all'the threads which are in contact with the flap, said folded parts being secured together to form a package.
