To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD G. QUAOK- nNnoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Display- Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to display-holders.
Among the objects of my invention is the providing of an improved display-holder movable through an opening in a structure whereby the holder may be placed at the outside of the structure for display purposes or inclined toward the inside for the purpose of removing the holder from the opening for cleaning the holder or for other desired purposes.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved display-holder having a detachable connection with a movable windowsash; another object of my invention is to provide an improved display-holder of the character indicated above which may be made practically waterproof in construction; a further object is to provide an improved display-holder which will not inte1= fere with the cleaning of the glass and the usual and ordinary manipulation of the sash of the window; a further object is to provide an improved display-holder which can be readily attached to windows of existing type without materially defacing the construction; a further object of my invention is to provide an improved displayholder which will not interfere materially with the light coming through the window. Further objects will appear from the detailed description to follow and from the appended claims.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, and first to the forms of Figs. 1 to 7, inclusive, the building construction shown may be of conventional form, including a window-construction comprising the sill 10, the lintel 11, the ambs 12 forming the windowframe, the upper sash 13 and the lower sash 14 slidable vertically in the window:frame. These parts may be of any usual or suitable construction and are not described in detail.
For support of the weight of the upper sash 13 and associated parts and contents, suitable meanssuch as counterbalance weights 15 and 16, or bolts engaging into the jambs 12 at right and left hand below the meeting rail at bottom of upper sash 13-may be employed.
The display-holder 17, which may be of any desired form, comprises as here shown a rectangular casing the sides, front, top and bottom of which may be of glass, screening, or other suitable material, detachably secured to the upper sash 13 by any convenient means, here shown as a latching-bolt mechanism 18.
The casing on the display-holder 17 has a sliding connection with the upper sash 13, as best shown in Fig. 4, being provided with a laterally-extending flange portion 19 hav ing a sliding connection with a channel member 20 secured to the side frame 21 of the sash 13. By means of this construction when the lower sash 14 is raised and the upper. sash 13 is lowered, the latch bolt 18 may then be operated to release the displayholder 17 from the upper sash 13 and the upper sash may then be raised,-leaving the display-holder at the bottom of the winblow-frame.
The exterior flange of the vertical channels 20, secured'at right and left hand to the outside of the upper sash 13 may be extended down to form stops to prevent the display-holder from falling backward on the outside when the upper sash 13 is raised and the display-holder is in this lowered position, or other convenient stops may be employed for this purpose. 7
In order that the display-holder 17 may be swung inwardly to the dotted-line position shown in Fig. 1 for washing the exterior of the holder or for other purposes, hinge members 22 (shown in detail in Fig. 3) are provided at the lower end of the window, whicli cooperate when the displayholder is in its lowered position with hinge members 23 secured at the lower end of the display-holder 17. These hinge members assist in holding the flanges 19 in parallel position to properly engage with channels 20 when the sash 13 is again lowered for attachment to the display-holder 17.
The hinge member 22 may be formed, as here shown, of a piece of sheet-metal secured to the window-sill 10 and having a pair of curved fingers 24, the ends of which extend around a pivot-pin 25 with which the curved end 26 of the hinge member 23 engages. A central curved tongue 27 is here shown as struck up from the material of the hinge member 22, with which the inner surface of the hinge member 23 engages as the display-holder is swung inwardly for removal for cleaning or for other purposes.
The latching bolts 18 may as here shown engage the opening 28 formed in the hinge members 23 for supporting the displayholder in position with respect to the sash 13.
The relation of the flange 19 with respect to the channel members 20 is such that when the display-holder is disconnected from the sash l3 and the sash 13 is raised clear to the top, the channel member 20 will be disengaged from the flange 19 to permit the display-holder to be swung inwardly to the dotted-line position shown in Fig. 1. Any convenient means for turning the displayholder to reverse the same may be employed.
While the construction of the displayholder may be of any suitable material or combination-as wood, metal, glass, screening, or the likein the exemplification as here shown the sides, front, top and bottom are formed of lass plates held together at their edges by s eet-metal construction. By this construction the light from the window is not materially interfered with and a practically waterproof construction is secured.
If desired, the glass of the top may, on
account of condensation, be put on in two thicknesses with space between the glass plates.
Figs. 6 and 7 show details of one construction of the holder. Fig. 6 shows the connection between the front and side of the holder, and the rear construction of the holder. In the construction as here shown, the front plate 29 of the holder is secured to the side plate 30 by means of two shaped sheet-metal members 31 and 32, which are clamped together on the plates 29 and 30 by means of screws 33 threaded into the tapped metal or into nuts 34. The rear construction as here shown for holding the rear edge of the plate 30 comprises a shaped metal member 35 having two opposed portions 36 and 37 between which the edge of the plate 30 is clamped. The flange 19 which cooperates with the channel member 20 may be formed integral with the shaped sheet-metal member 35.
In Fig. 7 is shown the connection between the top glass plate 38 and the front glass plate 29, and also the mounting for the rear edge of the top plate 38. The connection as here shown between the top plate 38 and the front plate 29 comprises three shaped sheetmetal members 39, 40 and 41, the members 39 and 40 being held together by means of screws 42 and the members 40 and 41 being held together in any suitable manner, as by soldering.
The construction at the upper rear edge of the casing as here shown comprises two shaped sheet-metal members 43 and 44, between which the rear edge of the top glass plate 38 is clamped. By means of this construction a practically watertight displayholder or case is secured; the sheet-metal member 43 being shaped to form an upwardly-extending flange portion 45 which enters a channel 46 secured to the sash 13 to prevent water from finding its way between the inner edge of the top of the holder and the upper portion of the sash 13.
In. use, the holder as here shown may be used as a show-case in which articles which it is desired to display may be placed. To place the articles in the case the lower sash 14 is raised and the upper sash 13 is lowered. The latch bolt 18 is then operated to release the show-case 17 from the upper sash 13 and the upper sash is raised sufliciently topermit access to the interior of the show-case 17 through its open rear side.
The articles to be displayed are then placed in the show-case and the upper sash 13 is again lowered and the latch bolts 18 are operated to connect the show-case with the upper sash. The upper sash is then raised and the lower sash is lowered.
By removing the glass from the top sash 13 and placing doors at the rear of the display-holder 17, or by omitting any inclosure at the rear of the holder 17 and placing casement doors in the opening of the sash 13, the articles in the holder would be readily accessible from the apartment while the sash 13 is in lowered position.
In case it is desired to clean the exterior or glass of the display-holder 17, or if for any other reason it is desired to incline the display-holder to the inside of the opening, the lower sash 14 is raised, the upper sash 13 is lowered, the display-holder 17 is disconnected from the upper sash, the upper sash 13 is raised high enough so that the channel member 20 is disengaged from the flange 19 and the dis lay-holder is then tilted inwardly on t e pivot member 22, when it can be readily removed, or when tilted to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 the glass or other outside walls can be readily cleaned.
In Fig. 8 is shown a construction in which the display-holder instead of tilting about a horizontal axis on the pivot secured to the window-sill, swings on a vertical axis on pivots secured to a frame which has a sliding connection with the upper sash 13. In this form the window-construction may be the same as the form just described, as also the channel member20. In this form, however, the display holder 46 has a hinged connection 47 with a marginal rectangular frame 48, the vertical edges of which mar ginal frame have a sliding connection with the channel member 20 on the sash 13, the frame 48 being connected with the sash 13 by means of latch bolts 18, similar to those in the form shown in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive. In the operation of this form, if it is desired to have access to the exterior or to remove the display-holder 46, the lower sash 14 is raised, the upper sash 13 is lowered, and the marginal frame 48 is disconnected from the sash 13. The upper sash 13 is then raised sufficiently to permit the upper edge of the display-holder 46 to swing in beneath the lower edge of the sash 13 any suitable retaining means being provided for holding the marginal frame 48 in up right position. In the form as here shown the side walls of the display holder converge outwardly, so that the corner 49 of the display-holder will clear the marginal frame 48 as it is swung inwardly.
In Figs. 9, 10 and 11 I have shown my invention in connection with a window-box for flowers, and the like. In this form the window-box 49 is pivotally mounted at 50 to swing about a vertical axis on the rectangular frame 51, which is provided with laterally-extending flanges 52 which fit 1n the channel members 53, which channel members are secured to the upper sash 54. In this form of the invention, the outer flange of the channel member 53 may be extended down to prevent the rectangular frame 51 from falling out of the window when this frame is disconnected from the upper sash, and the upper sash is raised. The window-box may be provided with a suitable latticework or trellis 55 for the vines or plants in the window-boX.
The use of this form of my invention is substantially the same as that of the form shown in Fig. 8. If it is desired to obtain access to the window-box for watering the plants or training the vines up on the latticework of the window-box, or the like, the lower sash is raised, the upper sash is lowered, and the latch mechanism 56 is operated to release the window-box from the upper sash; the upper sash is raised sufliciently to permit the window-box to swing about the pivot 50 and the window-box is swung to bring it inside to a position in which it is accessible.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 12, 13 and 14, the display-holderis provided with a closure for its rear side. In this form the display-holder 57 is provided with a rectangular wooden frame 58 for supporting the glass sides 59 and the glass front 60. This wooden frame 58 is provided with laterally-extending flanges 61 which fit in the channel members 62, which channel members are secured to the upper sash G3. The outer flanges of the channel members 62 may be extended down a sufficient distance to prevent the frame 58 from falling out when it is disconnected from the upper sash, and the upper sash is raised. For closing the rear side of the display-holder 57 a pair of swinging doors 63 is provided hinged at 64 to the wooden frame 58. The doors 63 may be provided with panes of glass 65 in order not to obstruct the light.
The operation of this form of my inven tion is substantially the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, the upper sash in Fig. 12 being provided with a latching mechanism 66, by means of which the display-holder 57 is secured to the sash, and the holder 57 being provided with a hinge member (37 for coiiperation with a corresponding hinge member similar to the hinge member 22 of Fig. 3.
In all forms of the device as here shown the display-holder can be readily attached to existing types of window construction without interfering with the operation of the windows, with little if any defacement, and without materially obstructing the light from the opening.
In all forms of the device the displayholder can be readily swung from its position outside of the opening to a position inside for cleaning, etc.
It is evident that the channel members 20, 46, 53 and 62 when applied will greatly reinforce the rigidity of the sash.
I have here described my invention as applied to a display-holder, but it is evident that it is not limited to such application but may be applied to ornamental latticework or other objects which it is desired to support in the adjustable manner of my invention.
While I have here shown several embodiments of my invention, it admits of various modifications, which will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, and, as it is evident that such modifications or changes may be made in the structure of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof, I therefore desire not to be limited to the construction here shown, the scope of my invention being defined in the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination with a building construction, having an opening therein, lying in a substantially vertical plane, and an upper and lower sash, slidably mounted in said opening, of a holder and a mounting for directing said holder for movement through the opening beneath said upper sash, and for sliding movement to a position in front of the upper sash.
2. The combination with a building construction comprising ,a window-frame having an opening therein and a sash slidably mounted in said opening, of a movable holder having a sliding connection with said sash, said display-holder and sash being relatively movable from a position in which the display-holder is substantially in front of the sash, to a position in which the sash is substantially above the display-holder, and means for securing said holder against sliding movement with respect to said sash whereby said display-holder will move with said sash.

The combination with a building construction comprising a window-frame having an opening therein and a sash slidably mounted in said opening, of a holder having a sliding connection with said sash, releasable means for securing said holder against sliding movement with respect to said sash, said holder being movable through said opening, and means for directing said holder in its movement through said opening.
4:. The combination with a building construction comprising a window-frame having an opening therein and a sash slidably mounted in said opening, of a movable supwith said sash, and a holder pivotally mounted adjacent one edge of said frame.

The combination with a building construction comprising a window-frame having an opening therein and a sash slidably mounted in said opening, of a movable holder having a sliding connection with said sash, releasable means for securing said holder against sliding movement with respect to said sash whereby said holder will move with said sash, and means for pivot ally supporting said holder to swing inwardly when said releasable means are released.

The combination with a building construction comprising a window-frame having an opening therein and a sash slidably mounted in said opening, of a movable holder having a sliding connection with said sash, releasable means for securing said holder against sliding movement with respect to said sash, means for pivotally supporting said holder to swing inwardly when said releasable means are released, and means for preventing said holder from swinging outwardly when said releasable means are released.
8. The combination with a building con struction comprising a window-frame having an opening therein and a sash slidably mounted in said opening, of a holder movable through said opening beneath said sash, means for retaining said holder in position while the sash is lowered, and means for securing said holder to said sash after said sash is lowered, whereby said holder and sash may be raised together.
