T 0 all 107mm it may concern Be it known that I, KENNETH I. SMALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in water tanks of the general type disclosed in patents to George T. Horton, No. 85762 issued June 25, 1907; NO. 1008645 issued November 14, 1911; No. 1177704 issued April 4, 1916 and No. 1184347 issued May 23, 1916. Such a tank comprises in general the tank structure proper with an inclined bottom and supporting legs, and is additionally supported by a central water leg or cylinder which joins the bottom of the tank and forms a settling basin for mud andsediment. An inlet pipe is ordinarily arranged to supply water up through the settling basin or water leg.
It has been found that when the tank is used in cold climates some protection is needed to prevent freezing of the water. In Patents Nos. 1177704 and 1184347 there is shown a tank with the water leg or cylinder divided by a false bottom into an upper and lower compartment; the former communicating with the tank above and filled with water, and the latter affording a heating chamber in which is placed a stove or other suitable heating device. In the center of the false bottom is cut a circular opening into which is inserted the stove pipe of the stove, and the smoke and products of combustion are conducted upward through the entire height of the ,tank and through the roof by means of an iron or steel pipe, the bottom end of which is connected with the circular opening in the center of the false bottom. It has been found in practice, that in some cases such means for warming the water are objectionable owing to the fact that the water in contact with the pipe passing through the tank cools it to such an extent as to impair the draft of the stove below, and causes condensation of moisture in the air in the pipe to such'an extent as to interfere with combustion.

As shown in said drawings that part of the inclined bottom of the tank (of the general construction described in said prior patents) which joins the central water leg is indicated at 10, and the water leg or cylinder is indicated at.11.\- The cylinder 11 is divided by a false bottom 15 into an upper and lower compartment; the former communicating with the tank above and filled with water, and the latter affording a heating chamber in which is placed a stove or other suitable heating devicel6, while access is afforded theretothrough a door, not shown, A water supply pipe 24, extends up through the lower compartment of the cylinder 11, passes through the curved bottom 15 and extends to a sufficient height into the water chamber above to prevent the 'inflowing currentsv of water from disturbing the sediment in the cylinder. The top of the tank is covered by a conical roof 8, which may be of any ordinary form of construction, supported by the brackets 91, 91 a sufficient height above the edge of the tank in order to leave extends upwardly from the stove through the heating drum 90, through the entire height of the tank, and through an opening 9 in the roof 8. In order to conserve heat, the cylinder 11 is surrounded by a shell or frost casing 34 which may be made of steel, tile, brick, wood, or other suitable material, and is spaced away from the cylinder wall in order to form an airspace between such wall and Openings 7, 7 the cylinder 11 below the false bottom 15 to permit the circulationof air in order that warm air from the heating chamber may enter the space between the cylinder 11 and the shell or frost casing 34.
A pipe, not shown, passing through the frost casing 34 and the cylinder 11 below the false bottom 15 is arranged for admitting .fresh air to the heating chamber from the outside.
