' f y Hoe-HOLDER.
specificati@ of Letters Patent. Patented June 15, 1920 i Appiieauon'mea'october s` 1919. Serial No. 329.1337.
To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that we, (1) ALFRED JOHN- SON and (2) VAN NESS GREEN, citizens of (1) Blooming Grove and (2) Edgerton, in the counties of (1) Dane and (2) Fock and State of Wisconsimhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hog-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the present invention resides in the provision of ar hog holder wherein there is provided a looped snare having both ends' thereof connected to a movable operating rod whereby the snare will be closed in half the time required Should one end thereof be attached to a fixedl support as previously customary.
A furtherrobject of the invention is to provide a hog holder of novel construction Vembodying a looped snare and a ratchet rod for closing the same with improved ratchet devices associated with said rod, and bearing therefor. j
With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the Same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of partsV to be `l hereinafter more fully described,l and then claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing byy vlike characters designating corresponding parts throughout' the several views, and wherein- Figure 1` is a longitudinal sectional view of a hog holder constructed in accordance with the present invention, the two' ends of the looped snare being illustrated as fixed to one end of theV operating ratchet rod,
Fig. 2
broken awayin section with the operating ratchet rod partially withdrawn from the casing to shorten the snare, the ratchet lever being movedv to position to permit the operating rod to be withdrawn,
FiO'. 3 is a cross vsectional view taken on line III-III of Fig. 1 showing the tension spring for the ratchet lever,
Fig. l is a cross sectional view taken On line IV--IV of Fig. 1 showing the mountinscrew for the ratchet lever, and
ig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the end plug for the tubular casing and bearing for the ratchet rod.
Referring more in detailto the accompanying drawing, there is illustrated a cyresiding atlk nient ofthe ratchet vrod in the casing being is a side elevational view partly'r` one wzll of the plug 10v adjacent the inner end thereof is provided with a transverse opening 12 communicating with ,the bore 11 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the plug 10 being insertible within the inner end of the casing with the opening 12 inwardly positioned. Y i i A ratchet rod 13, rectangular in cross section is'slidably received within the rectan-` gular bore 11 of the plug 10 with the ratchet teeth 14; thereof alined with thetransverse opening 12 of said plug, the entering vmovelimited by the inner' end 15 of the handle 16, the inner end 15 of the handle having a rectangular socket therein' for lthe reception of the adjacent end ofthe rectangular rod 13 to be retained therein by the transverse pin 17. The outer end of the rod 13 is tapered as at 18 and at its extreme outer end isV provided with an Venlarged head 19 in which head the ends of a flexible snare 20 are permanently secured as at 21, the strands of the snare 2O passing through openings9 in the end wall 8 of the cap 7 for permanent engagement with the head 1() of the operating rod'13. Y
A ratchet device isvcarriedby the casing 6 an'dis associated with theratchet teeth 14CA of the rod 13 and includes a lever' 22 having an outwardly tapered opening 23 therein for the reception of a screw 4241 entering the adjacent side of the casing 6, the outer' end 25 10o of the lever 22 carrying a pin 26 entering anVV l opening 27` formed in the casing 6 and being surroundedby a coil spring. 28 normally forcing the lever end 25 outwardly while the opposite end 29 of said lever 22 is normally 10E,
retained in the casing 6 by the pin .pro- 11`0- ii L the snare 2Q move inwardly so that only half the distanceo pullingI of the rod 13 is rejecting into the opening 12, the pin 30 in its normal position projecting inwardly of the opening 12 and into the bore 11 of said plug for association with the ratchet teeth 14C of the operating rod 13 as illustrated in Fig. 1.
With. the tapered opening 23 in the leveri22 the lever is permitted to have a slight piv- Y otal movement upon the screw 211 for purposes oi permitting the pin 30 automatically lto ratchet over the teeth 141, and to be manu# ally withdrawn from engagement with the teeth by pressure upon theV end 25 of said lever during which movement the spring 28 is compressed and the pin 30 is withdrawn from the path of movement of the operating rod 13 and into the opening 12.
, In assembling the different parts of the device, 'I the snare 20 has its ends passed through the openings 8 in the cap 6 and permanently secured as at 21 to the head 19 of the rod 13. The rod 13 has its inner end passed into the outer end of the tube GY whereby the cap 7 may be placed upon the end thereof and retained in position by the radial screw 7. The end plug 10 is then received on the rectangular inner end'of the operating rod 13 With the opening 12 thereof alined with the ratchet teeth 111, the plug being inserted in the casing with theopening 12 therein in registration withfthe o'pening 31 in the casing, at which time the han-- dle -16.is secured to the inner end of the rod. Y
The lever 22is then mounted upon the casing'bythe screw 23 with the tensioned pin 26l extending into the casing opening 27 'i lWhile the ratchet pin 43'()V projects through the alined openings '1 2' and 31 forautomatic Y engagement with the ratchet teeth liliand further to constitute alock for theplug10.
F rom the abovev detail device it is thought that the construction and operation will at Oncebe apparent, it being in size by pulling inwardly upon the rod 13 during which movement both ends 21,015
quired to close .the snare about anobject.
When the rod 13 is pulled inwardly the? ratchet pm 30 .automatically moves over the 'ratchet teeth11'and coperates'th'erewith to description or' the f noted that the snare' 20 1s VdecreasedV prevent accidental enlargement of the snare While the snare may be readily released from an obj ect `by pressing; uponv thev endg-25 of the lever to permit the rod 13 to move into the casing 6 With a subsequent enlargement of Vthesnare loop.
`lVhile there is herein shown and described the .preferred embodimentof the invention, is l to Ibe `Yunderstood that. minor changes may be `"made therein as will iall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
