FLASH AND RECOIL REPUCER FOR FIREARMS.
is to provide a form of construction inv which metal tubing may be employed with a minimum of machinework thereon.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings which forms a part of this application Figure l is a. longitudinal section through the attachmenttogether with a view of the end of the barrel of a firearm to which it is attached, and
Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 11-11 of Fig. 1.
The attachment comprises a tubular casing 3 interiorly threaded at the rear end 4 for securing it to the muzzle of a firearm 5. Forward of this securing thread the bore is enlarged to form an expansion chamber 6, and in front of this, inside the casing is a helical battle which is rigid with the casing and preferably though not necessarily of one piece of metal therewith. It is formed by cutting a deep groove which constitutes a helical baffle chamber open to an axial passage for the bullet in line with the axis of the barrel. The helical bafile chamber is preferably divided off from the expansion 'chamber in order to leave metal for in- -creased strength at the rear, but may be cut out at the forward end. The portion of the axial passa e formed by the inner edge of the helical ball e preferably has a slight taper, being smaller at the forward end, so that each successive convolution of the helical baffic will have its proper share of the bafiling action and not be wholly screened by the convolutions behind. The taper is also useful in manufacturing and in securing alinement. Midway of the helical battle chamber. one or more gas- outlets 8, 8 lead through thetubular casing and serve as outlets for.

impeded sufliciently for proper action, the tubular casing is surrounded by an outer tubular bafile 9 which is secured to the tubular casing at the rear by threads 10. This provides an annular impedance passage which is sufliciently narrow and sufliciently long to materially check the flow through the gas-outlets, for the reduction of the flash is. found to depend upon the impedance 1n this annular passage. The impedance is preferably further increased by an intermediate tubular baflie- 11 which is secured preferably by a forced fit to the tubular casing at' the forward end 12, and for the balance of its length has aslightly larger bore than the outside diameter of the tubular casing so as to leave a second annular impedance passage which leads at'its rear end into the other impedance passage. The outer tubular baflle has an inturned flange at its forward end. By having two tubes and two annular impedance passages, the g: s is caused to flow first rearwardly to the end of the intermediat tubular bafllc, then forwardly between the intermediate and outer tubular bafiles and finally radially at the mouthof the device thereby increasing the impedance and further reducing the flash.
Vhat I claim, is-
1. A flash and recoil reducer for firearms comprising a tubular casing adapted to be secured to the muzzle of a firearm and containing a helical bafiie with the convolutions rigidly connected to the casing and forming an axial passage in line with the bore of the barrel and a helical balrle chamber surrounding and open to the axial passage.
2. A flash and recoil reducer for firearms comprising a tubular casing adapted to be secured to the muzzle of a fire -rm and containing a helical battle with the convolutions r gidly connected to the casing and forming a tapered axial passage in line with the bore of the barrel and a helical baffle chamber surrounding and open to the axial passage.
3. A flash and recoil reducer for firearms comprising a tubular casin adapted to be secured to the muzzle of a firearm and containing an expansion chamber and a helicalcomprising a tubular casin adapted to be secured to the muzzle of a rearm and containing a helical baffle with the convolutions rigidly connected to the casing and forming an axial passage in line with the bore of the barrel and a helical bafiie chamber closely surrounding and open to the axial passage, the helical chamber being provided with a gas-outlet through the casing about midway of its length.
5. A flash and recoil reducer for firearms comprising a tubular casin adapted to be secured to the muzzle of a grearm and containing a baffle forming an axial passage in line with the boreof the barrel and a ba'flie chamber within the casing, a tubular baflie surrounding the casing and secured to it at the rear end and forming an annular impedance passage with an annular vent at the forward end of the casing, and a gas-outlet connecting the bafl le chamber and the impedance passage through the casing.
6. A flash and recoil reducer for firearms comprising a tubular casin adapted to be secured to the muzzle of a firearm and containing a bafiie forming an'axial passage in line with the bore of the barrel and a battle chamber within the casing, a tubular baflle closely surrounding the casing and secured to it at the rear end and forming an annular impedance passage with an annular vent at the forward end of the casing directed ,toward the axial passage, and a gas-outlet connecting the baffle chamber and the impedance passage through the casing.
7. A flash and recoil reducer for firearms comprising a tubular casing adapted to be secured to the muzzle of a firearm and containing a bafiie forming an axial passage in line with the bore of the barrel and a baflie chamber within the casing, an outer tubular bafile surrounding the casing and secured to it at the rear end, an intermediate tubular baflie secured to the. casing at the forward end and projecting rearwardly into the space between the tubular casing and the outer tubular bafile and forming inner and outer impedance passages which communicate at their rear ends and in which the outer passage has an annular Vent at its forward end, and a gas-outlet connecting the baflle chamber and the inner impedancepassage.
8. A flash and recoil reducer for firearms comprising a tubular casin adapted to be secured to the muzzle of a rearm and containing a baffle forming an axial passage in line with the bore of the barrel and a ba-fl'le chamber within the casing, an outer tubular baflle surrounding the casing andsecured to it at the rear end, an intermediate tubular baflle secured to the casing at the forward end and projecting rearwardly into the space between the tubular casing and the outer tubular baflie and forming inner and outer impedance passages which communicate at their rear ends and in which the outer passage has an annular vent at its forward end directed toward the axial assage, and a gas-outlet connecting the ba e chamber and the inner impedance passage.
