To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERMAN -SAUCKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements .in Pipe-Fittings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pipe fitting for a kitchen range boiler and it provides means for readily connecting a gas heater to the boiler after it has been installed in a dwelling and connected with the water system.
One of the objects of'the invention is to provide means for connecting the gas heater to the boiler without tapping any of the pipes connecting the boiler with the cold water supply and the back of the kitchen range.
The invention is designed to provide simple and efiicient devices coacting with the interior of a closed boiler and extending from apertures in the shell for connecting the means to circulate the water from the water boiler to the gas heater.
Heretofore in connecting the gas heater to a boiler with inaccessible interior it was necessary to cut the cold water inlet and the lower hot water pipe, fit a T to each pipe and connect it with the heater. This method required accurate fitting of the pipes with consequent loss of time and labor.
By means of the present invention the pipe fittings for the gas heater can be standardized and easily connected to a pair of nipple couplings positioned a predetermined distance apart to fit the length of pipes.
The novel features of the invention are more fully described in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a boiler embodying this invention.

Fig. 3 is a detailed vertical section of a nipple connection on a larger scale.
Fig. 4 shows the method of attaching the flexible connection to a nipple section.
In the drawing the numeral 6 designates a boiler which is closed at the top and bottom thereby making the interior manually inaccessible. A cold water pipe 7 leading from a water supply enters the top of the boiler and extends nearly to the bottom. tribution in the dwelling. The water is heated in the boiler by connecting pipes 9 and 10 with the upper and lower portions of the water back of a kitchen range as is well known.
\Vhen the fire is out in the range and it is desired to heat the water in the boiler a gas heater 12 of ordinary construction as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is connected to the boiler. The heater is equipped with a cold water inlet pipe 13 at the bottom and a hot water outlet pipe 14. leading from the top. These pipes are connected to the boiler shell by means of a sectional nipple or spud having a rear flange 15 coacting with the interior of the boiler wall. The nipple also includes a stem 16 which when the nipple is in place projects from an aperture 17 reamed in the wall of the boiler. There are two apertures shown in a line with each other, one being for the upper outlet and the other for the lower inlet.
Each stem has its exterior threaded to engage a coupling 18 made to lock the nipple to the shell of the boiler. Between the coupling and wall of the boiler are disposed a pair of gaskets 19 and an intermediate washer 20 to prevent leakage. The washer can be concaved transversely on its inner face so that it will adapt itself to the curvature of the periphery of the boiler. As inclicated in the drawing, each flange at the rear of the nipple is scniicircular so that when both sections are positioned in the aperture, the two flanges will form a complete circle, to eliminate any gaps for the water to leak through. At the same time the annular flange by its engagement with the wall of the boiler prevents movement of the nipples after they are locked together.
The method of, positioning the nipple with its flange engaging the interior of a closed receptacle consists in forming the nipple of two longitudinal sections or halves and attaching to each section a flexible connection such as a string 21 as indicated in Fig. 4. The string is secured to each section by passing one end of it through an eye 22 located in the stem of the nipple. Both sections are inserted into one of the apertures and a pull on the string draws the stems to extend from the aperture. After the sections are positioned to register with each other the coupling is partly screwed on the end of the stem to hold it in place. Each string can be easily removed by drawing its lower anchored end outof the bore and the coupling can-be screwed up to force the gaskets against the shell thus rigidly fastening the nipple. It will be seen from the foregoing description that after one of the sections is inserted into the aperture it hangs down into the interior of the boiler in order to keep the aperture unobstructed for the insertion of the other section. The last section which is an exact duplicate of the first named section includ ing the string, is then suspended in the boiler and a pull on both strings will draw both sections to position them in the aperture.
Modifications of the invention can be made within the scope of the claims and the law of equivalents,'for example :-l/Vhen it is necessary to clean the interior of the boiler the lower cold water pipe 13 can be disconnected and by connecting a cock to the coupling the force of the water from pipe 7 can be utilized to force out the sediment in the bottom of the boiler.
What I claim is:
1. In a pipe fitting the combination with a receptacle inaccessible from the exterior provided with an aperture, of a sectional flange nipple having a stem projecting from the aperture, said flange forming an, annular member to coact with the inner wall of the receptacle, and a coupling engaging the stem for locking the nipple to the receptacle.
2. In a pipe fitting the combination with a boiler inaccessible from the exterior provided with an aperture, of a two section flanged nipple having a threaded stern projecting from the aperture, each flange being semi-circular to engage the inner wall of the boiler, and a coupling engaging the threaded stem for fastening the nipple to the boiler.
3. In a pipe fitting the combination with a boiler inaccessible from the exterior provided with an aperture, of a two section flanged nipple having a threaded stem projecting -rom the aperture, each flange being semi-circular to engage'the inner wall of the boiler, a coupling engaging the threaded stem for fastening the nipple to the boiler, and a pipe fitted to the coupling.
4. The method of fitting a pipe to a boiler manually inaccessible from the exterior thereof, which consists in reaming a hole in the boiler wholly, inserting a two section flanged nipple into the hole, drawing the nipple to project from the hole with the flange inside, and locking the nipple to the boiler.

8. The method of fitting a pipe to a boiler manually inaccessible from the exterior thereof, which consists in reaming a hole in the boiler, inserting a sectional flanged threaded nipple into the hole with the flange inside, holding the nipple in position by means of a flexible connection, placing a packing ring on the nipple to fit the periphery of the boiler, and locking the nipple to a boiler by screwing a coupling onto the threads.
