To all whom it'may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE EDWARD KINGH, subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at The Poplars, Quirmovement, bringing its underside to the rear and exposing its top side as a back rest. An automatic check is associated with the hinge to hold the lid in the raised position open position; Fig. 3 is alongitudinal section showing the lid in closed position in the full lines and the'same in partly open position in the dotted lines; and Fig. 41 is a longitudinal section showing the lid in fully open position.

The seat panel 10 may be a cabinet fixture or may be a removable seat. adapted over a sanitary pan or basin. When it is fitted in a fixed position the folding lid rest 11 may be omitted. This rest is provided 7 V to support the lid in the open position (see Fig. 4) when it does not rest against a'wall or other fixed structure, and it is mounted on the ledge piece 12 so that it may be folded forward (see Fig. 1) to facilitate packing and transport. The ledge piece 12 is fixed across the rear part of the seat panel 10 and carries the butts 13 of the lid hinges. The

- leaves 14 of these hinges are long; near the pintles 15 they are screwed to the folding carrier 16; and at their ends they are pivotally attached (17) to the lid 18.

The pivots 17 are fitted into the ends of V a rib 1 9 which is fixed across the top of the lid, supporting the lid so that when the hinge is raised the lid will tend to hang angularly on said pivots 17 with its fore edge advanced otally'connected at 23 to the folding carrier 16. As the center of gravity 'of'the lid is slightly forward of the pintles'17 when the lid' is fully open,"the lid tends to "move by gravity to the closed position .(see Figs. 3

and 1) and as its forward edge is advanced, 1t will always close with its rear surface downward,thereby insuring that the underside of-the lid will never beexposed to view. p

To-hold'the lid steady in the open position while the closetfis in use, a stop device 7 is fitted to check forward movement. This stop device consists of a sliding bar 21"fixed to the ends of check'rods22 whichfare pivment of the lid; when lli lS held tightly upon the seat panel, as bytheweight of a person' sitting upon it, movement of the hingesis checked, and so the'lid is then held in the fully open position. f i The placing of the hand grip 20 near the rear. edge of the lid 18 insures the opening of the lid always with itsupper side for.- ward. The contact of the forward end of the lid when fully raised withthe folding carrier 16 insures the tipping 'back of the lid (see Figs. 2 and 4), so that whenit is freed by relief of weight from the sliding forward end of it will come to the frontof the seat panel, this movement being indi:- i-
