UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM RILEY, OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO CHARLES R. PEDDLE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXHAUST-VALVES FOR AIR-BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,220, dated December 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM RILEY, of
Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State the escape of air or steam from the brake-cylinders upon railroad cars, to allow the air or steam to escape instantly and simultaneously from the cylinders of all the cars, but which may be applied with advantage to other uses; and it consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the device, as hereinafter more fully described.
A Bis the box which contains the valve. The part A forms the valve-seat, and is connected at the exhaust a with the brake-cylinder. The part B forms the cover, and is connected at the inlet 1) with the supply-pipe. 0 is the inlet-valve, which has its seat in the center of the exhaust-valve D, and opens toward the exhaust a. D is the exhaust-valve, which has its seat upon the part or plate A, and covers the passage a leading to the cylinder and the annular passages or openings a formed in the part A around the opening a, and leading into the open air. The valves 0 D are represented as being hinged to their seats, but their construction is immaterial, and
they may move up and down upon guides, if
desired.
With this construction, when the engineer admits the air or steam it presses open the ingress-valve-.C, and passes through the passage a into the cylinders, and at the same time holds the valve D firmly to its seat. When the engineer letsoff the air or steam from the inlet-pipes, the pressure in said pipes will be instantly reduced, and the expansion of the air or steam within the cylinders forces open the valve D, and allows the said air or steam to escape into the air through the openings a By this construction, the air or steam will escape instantly from all the cylinders, witl1- drawing all the brakes at the same time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I The arrangement of the valves G D with respect to each other, and the ingress and exhaust openings b a a, all constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
WILLIAM RILEY.
