Be it known that I, BERNARD D. KNowLns,
, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Antismutting Devices for Traveling Sheets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel means for preventing'the smutting of traveling sheets, and it is particularly intended for use in preventing the smutting of sheets as they are passed first in one direction and then in another direction through the folding mechanism of a folding machine, which means is arranged to present a rolling support for a sheet traveling first in one direction and next in another direction at an angle thereto.
My invention more particularly consists in a device comprising a rotary wheel hav-' lng an annular series of rotary disks, the axes of which disks are at right angles to the axis of the rotary wheel, so that when the device is engaged with a sheet traveling in one direction, the wheel will rotate and when the sheet is traveling in another direction at right angles toits first direction, the particular disk or disks which engage the sheet will rotate, while the wheel may remain stationary.
A practical embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which the embodiment is shown as applied to a folding machine of well known construction.
Figure 1 is a detail vertical section taken from front to rear through so much of a sheet folding machine as will illustrate the application of my invention.

In the folding machine in connection with which I have chosen to illustrate my invention, the sheets are fed longitudinally on to the folding table 1, into engagement with the front stop 2, by the usual upper and lower marginal endless tape carriers 3 and 41, into position over the folding slot 5 in the table, between the longitudinally arranged stationary folding blades 6 and the reciproeating foldinggrippers 7, which grippers are. operated any well known or approved means. These folding grippers 7 coact with the stationary folding blades 6,
through the slot 5,.in the tablel, to first crease the sheets longitudinally of their travel over the edge of the folding blade along the intended line of fold, and to afterward complete the folding of the so creased sheet by drawing itfrom the folding blade through said slot in the table and to thereafter deliver the so folded sheet to any desired point.
As the freshly printed sheet is moved longitudinally along the table intoengagement with the front stop, and then laterally by the folding of the sheet through the table, the printed matter on the under side of the sheet is liable to come into contact with the table and become smutted. I have provided a rolling support for the sheet, both as it IS moved longitudinally into its folding position and also when it is moved laterally during its folding operation, which support I will now describe in connection with thefolding machine herein illustrated and described.

may be held in position on the stud 9, by a washer 12 and screw 13. This wheel is provided with an annular series of radial slots 14 opening through its periphery and the periphery of the wheel is provided with a shallow groove 15 in which is seated a split ring 16. This split ring may be fixed against 'rotative movement on the wheel 11, as for instance, by providing the wheel with a stud or pin 17 interposed between the ends of the split ring 16. This ring 16 is preferably made of spring material so as to snugly seat in the peripheral groove 15 of the wheel.
