To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tooele, in the county of Tooele and State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Weed-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for cutting weeds, and more particularly to a weed cutter adapted for attachment to cultivators, harrows or the like, to operate in connection therewith.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having blades of a particular construction, connected to an auxiliary frame, and so arranged that the same will contact with substantially the entire ground surface, passed over by the harrow or. cultivator associated therewith.

A further object of the invention is to provide means for securing the weed cut ting blades to the auxiliary frame, so that the same may be readily and easily detached, and attached thereto.

With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of theinvention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawing in detail,the reference character 5 designates a transversely extending supporting beam, forming'a part of the auxiliary frame, the same being formed of wood or other suitable materia The supporting yoke, which supports the weed cutting blades, is indicated at 6, and

comprises opposed clamping elements 7 and 8, each of which is bent at, right angles, to embrace one of the corners of the transversely extending beam 5, so that the same willconform to the contour of the supporting beam to provide means for preventing twisting of the weed cutting blades, with relation to their support.

Each of these clamping members 7 and 8, is also provided with cooperating flanges 9 and 10, the flanges 9, as shown, are of a length to extend substantially the entirewidth of the supporting beam 5, and are provided with alining openings 11 formed therein, to receive the transversely-extending bolts 12, which bolts also pass through suitable openings formed in the blade beam '13, which is curved as at 14:, the lower extremity thereof being formed into an enlargement 15, and apertured as at 16,to receive the se curing bolts 17, passing through the openlngs 16, and through openings formed in the cutting blade 18, whereby the cutting blade is secured to its beam against dis- W placement.

Disposed between the flanges 10, of the yoke, is the beam 19, the same being secured between the flanges by means of the bolts 20, passing through suitable openings in the blade is in the form of a right hand blade,

and the other in the form of a left hand blade, however each of the blades includes a substantially flat portion 23, having a curved outer edge 2 1 which is preferably sharpened to provide a cutting edge, the rear portion of each curved edge 24, ex-

tends at an angle to present a shearing action, when the blade is moved through the ground.

Adjacent the forward portion of each of the blades, is a depending cutting blade 25,

which extends rearwardly, and inclined rearwardly, from the extreme forward extremity of the respective blades,'which cutting blades, embed themselves in the ground surface, and prevent lateral movement of the blades, when the same are in operation. A vertically extending portion 26, forms a part of each of the cutting blades, and is provided with a plurality of openings to receive suitable bolts passing through the beams, so that the cutting blades may be removably secured to their beams, to enable the same to be removed for the purpose of the sharpening, or replacing, in the event that the blades become broken, or otherwise rendered inoperative.

Each of the clamping elements, of the yoke, is provided with an upwardly extending flange 27, which flanges are provided with the key hole slots 28, which slots are constructed to receive the chain 29, employed in securing the plow blades to the frame, and in operation it is to be noted that the chain is moved through the upper portion of the key hole slots, until the same is in proper securing position, whereupon the chain is dropped or moved downwardly into the restricted portions of-the key hole slots, where the same is locked against displacement.

The forward portion of each of the clamping elements of the yoke, is provided with an opening as at 30, to receive the bolt 31, passing through an opening formed in the right angled end 32, of the securing member 33, the rear extremity of each of the securing members 33, extends upwardly as at 34:, and is provided with an opening to receive one extremity of the chain 29.

In the modified form of the invention as illustrated by Fig. 3 of the fdrawings,-the cutting blades 18 and 24' are substantially the same as that shown by Sheet 1 of the drawings, except that the depending cutting blades shown by Fig. 2 of the drawings, and indicated at 25 have been eliminated.

The securing mechanism, or yoke, which secures the cutting blades to the supporting beam 5 includes an upwardly extending flange 27 provided with the key hole slot 28',the flange 27' being shown as extending upwardly from the beam 5' at a point substantially intermediate the width of the beam.

The clamping element 8' ofthe yoke is also provided with an opening to accommodate the bolt 9 "which is secured to the clamping element 8' by means of the nut 10 operating on the bolt, the bolt 9 having connection with the yoke 11 which includes oposed arms apertured to receive the connecting link 12 of the chain 13'.

From the foregoing it is obvious that I have provided, by the construction described, asecuring means adapted to be used in connection with supporting, beams of va- In the operation of the device, the device is connected with a harrow or cultivator, to the rear thereof, and operates to cut any weeds or grass, which may be left standing,

by the cultivator, or machine to which the same is attached.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a weed cutting device, a supporting beam, a yoke including opposed clamping members, each of said clamping members having cooperating flanges, cutting blades, beams for supporting the cutting blades, means for securing the cutting blades. between the cooperating flanges of the yoke, and means including a chain and key hole slots, for removably securing the yoke to the supporting beam.

2. In a weed cutting device, a supporting beam, a yoke including opposed clamping members, the clamping members being formed to embrace one edge of the supporteach of the right angled flanges having a key hole slot, a securing member having connection with each of the opposed clamping members, a chain having connection with the securing members and passing through the key hole slots, the chain embracing the rear of the supporting beam, and means for removably securing the securing members to the yoke.

3. In a weed cutting device, a supporting beam, a yoke including opposed clamping members embracing the forward portion of the supporting beam, adjustable means embracing the rear of the supporting beam, for

securing the yoke thereto, weed cutting blades supported by the beam, each of the weed cutting blades including a curved cutting edge, and a depending cutting blade formed adjacent the forward portion of the cutting blades, the depending cutting blade,
