ELIJAH W. MOFFATT, OF HYDE PARK, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELFAND JOHN S. BLEAKIE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOOM-PICKING MECHANISMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,153, dated December 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, ELUAH W. MOFFATT, of Hyde Park, of the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Loom-Picker Mechanism; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing,.of which- Figure 1 denotes a top view; Fig. 2, a front elevation; and Fig. 3, a side view. of the pickerstaff operative-cam heretofore in general use in looms for'weaving wool fabrics.
It is well known that such a cam is liable soon to become worn on the rising part, or that against which the friction-roller strikes and ascends, and that when too much worn the whole cam has to be removed from the rock-shaft and another substituted. To avoid this diflicnlty or loss occasioned by wear of the cam is the object of my invention, which is shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7, of which Fig. 4 is a top view; Fig. 5, a front elevation; Fig.6, a side view; Fig. 7, a longitudinal section of the mechanism constituting such; Fig. 8 is a top view of the socketed piece or cam-carrier; and Fig. 9, a rear-end view of the adjustable rotary polygonal cam.
In carrying out my invention I construct the mechanism in two principal parts, A B.. The part or'carrier B is the socketed piece which receives the rock-shaft, it going through it, or its socket a, formed as usual and being held to it by clamp-screws. This socketed piece or carrier I provide with a prismatic or pyramidal tenon, b, to enter and fit a correspondin g hole, 0, or mortise made in or through the part A, which, instead of being a camv with but two operative sides, has three, four, or more it, as shown in the drawing, having four of them, marked 0 d e f. It is formed with a hub, g, to fit upon the tenon b, the two being secured together by a set-nut, h, and a screw, 2', formed on the tenon. The sides of the prismatic or pyramidal tenon correspond in number with the number of working-faces of the polygonal cam, the same being so that when one face may have become too much worn the cam may be turned and adjusted on the tenon so as to bring another of its faces into position for operation against the friction roller of the impinging arm.
I make no claim tothe picker-motion cam made as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
What I claim as my invention is- The combination of the adjustable three or more sided or polygonal cam A, socketed as described, with the carrier B provided with the prismatic tenon, all being substantially as and for the purpose explained.
E. W. MOFFA'IT.
