Description
u. w. GENUNG. JAR LIFTER. APPLICATION FILED AUG.20, 1917.
arm e1 Patented May 25, 1920.
BENJAMIN W. GENUNG, OF ULYSSES, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1920.
Application filed August 20, 1917. Serial No. 187,225.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN WV. Gn- NUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ulysses, in the county of Potter and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar- Lifters, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to kitchen articles and it is the principal object of the invention to provide an improved jar lifter whereby a jar may be positively engaged and lifted from a receptacle containing boiling water or other fluid used when sterilizing the jars, thus, avoiding the burning or scalding of the users hands.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the drawings there is shown a perspective of the improved jar lifter.
Having more particular reference to the drawing and in connection with which like reference characters will refer to corresponding parts, the improved jar litter comprises a single piece of spring wire designated 1, bent upon itsell intermediate its ends and coiled as at 2, whereupon the remaining portions of the piece are ar anged substantially parallel and have their extremities bent to provide hooks 3. These hooks 3 are so formed as to permit their ready engagement with the locking hails of fruit jars, which bails as will be understood, are pivoted to the necks of the same and are adapted to be swung thereover, whereby removable closures will be clamped in position upon the same.
Then using the improved lifter it is only necessary to grasp the implement adjacent the coiled portion thereof and engage the hooks 3 with the pivotal locking bails, whereupon the jar may be readily lifted from the receptacle or other containing vessel in which it is being sterilized without liability of burning or scalding the users hands. Furthermore, by coiling the intermediate portion of the implement as at 2, it will be readily understood that the sides of the implement will be placed under tension and as a consequence, the implement may be used in connection with jars of different sizes, which jars, of course, employ bails also varying in size.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claim, I consider within the spirit of my invention;
I claim A jar lifter composed of a substantially U-shaped spring wire member including a coiled web portion and outwardly bowed normally extended legs having their extremities turned back in relatively close, spaced and parallel relation to the legs to provide laterally disposed. hooks, said hooks being arranged at substantially right angles to the coiled intermediate portion and adapted, upon compression of the legs, to receive the locking bail of a jar, the coiled web portion constituting a handle capable of utilization without restraining the tension of the legs and also constituting tensioning means maintaining the hooks in engagement with a jar bail, upon release of the leg portions.
In testimony whereof, I aliix my signature hereto.
BENJAMIN W. GllllUNG.
