Specification of Letters Patent.
Patents d Mary 25, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, COLEMAN FINLEY, n citizen of the United States, residing at Dudley, in the county of Edgar and State ot Illinois, have invented certain new and useful .lmprovements in Gun-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates; to run openers, and has for its object to provide on improved can opener which can be used either to cut through the top of a con, or to cut through the side wall of a. can near the top, whereby it is adapted for use on cans of various kinds. The cutting member of the tool is adjustable so that it can be used on cans of various diameters.
The device is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is it perspective view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. The tool comprises :1 handle member and it cutting member udjustnbly mounted thereon. The handle comprises :1 loop 6 conveniently mode of heavy wire, each l ni ch terminating in a point 7 which is offset nngulurly as indicated at S from two bends 5) where the branches of the wire loop are secured together I hand ll) or the like. Either of the points 7 is adapted to be punched through the top oi a can at the center thereof to bring; the cranked. part 8 into position as u pivot on which the tool muy be turned around the can.
The two branches of the handle ore parallel. and the cutter is slidably mounted on these branches. This cutter comprises :1 strip o't' metal folded upon itself to term two bends 11 and 12 with parallel parts 13 having holes in line with each other through which holes the branches oil the handle 6 extend. One end i this cutting member is presented on one side of the handle perpendiculorly to the axis thereof, as indicated *5 at 14, this end being tapered to a, point with sharpened edges. The other end of the cutting member is bent as indicated at 15 into parallelism with the axis of the handle, and sharpened to a. point at 16 which is presented forwardly as shown.
In the use of the device, it it is desired to cut through the top of the can, the proper point 7 is punched through said top, and the point 1% is then punched through the top near the outer edge thereof, and then by turning the tool said point ll cuts a circle through said top. For cutting off the upper end of a. can the other point 7 is punched through the top and the point 16 is then punched through the side wall of the can, and then by turning the handle the side wall is cut around to detach the upper part of the can. The cutting member can be slid in or out on the handle to accommodate the blades to cons of various sizes, and the tool can be cheaply POllSllTllCtGd and will be found convenient for the intended uses.
l-r can opener comprising handle consisting of ii loop with forwardly extending brirnches each of which ends in an oi l set point adopted to be inserted through the top of? n can, and it cutter member consisting of u folded piece of metal through which the branches of the handle extend, said mem' ber terminating; in blades at its opposite ends, one blade being; presented at an angle to the axis of the handle and the other parallel thereto.
In testimony whereof, I hereby utlii; my si neture in presence of two witnesses.
COLEMAN FINLEY.
