To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn F. CoMs'rooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements n Presses, of which the following is a spec1- fication.
This invention relates to hand-operated lever presses provided with adjustable platens or press boxes; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed whereby the press is specially adapted for pressing electric armature coils and similar objects of diiferent sizes.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sideyiew of a press constructed according to this 1nvention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the press.
A supporting base 2 is provided, and is adapted to be secured to a work bench or table. This base has a longitudinal bar 3 formed on or secured to it. This bar has two inclined top sides arranged at a right angle to each other with the angle uppermost, and the upper portion of the longer side forms the bottom of a press chamber 4. A hole or chamber 5 is formed longitudinally in the bar 3, and steam is introduced into this chamber when it is desirable to heat the press chamber.
Columns 6 are formed on the middle parts of the sides of the base, and project upwardly from it. Adjustable uprights are arranged in the columns 6. These uprlghts are screw threaded, and they are provided with nuts 8 on their upper and lower end portions for adjusting their height, and clamping them to the columns. Each upright has a longitudinal groove 9 in one side, and 10 is a screw which is screwed into a hole in the column, and which has a projecting end portion 12 which engages with the groove 9 and prevents the column from being revolved.
A locking nut 14 is screwed on the screw 10 for securing it in place. The uprights 7 are provided at their upper ends with hookshaped bearings 15, and 16 is a rock-shaft mounted in the said bearings. A cam or eccentric 17 is secured on the shaft 16, and is provided with an operating lever or handle 18. I
The press is provided with a longitudinal top bar 20 having two inclined bottom sides arranged at a right angle to each other with the angle arranged downwardly and to one side of the angle of the bottom bar 3. The
lower portion of the longer bottom side of ghe bar 20 forms the top of the press cham- The sides of the press chamber 4 are formed of two longitudinal bars 21 and 22. The bar 21 is secured to the top bar 20 by screws 23, and the bar 22 secured to the bottom bar 3 by screws 24. Each bar 21 and 22 has slots 25 arranged crosswise of it for the passage of its fastening screws, and it is secured against the longer side of the bar to which it pertains. The bars 21 and 22 can be secured in various positions to vary the size of the press chamber 4, and adapt it to the side of the armature coil or other object to be pressed.
The armature coil to be pressed is placed in the angular groove formed by the two bars 22 and 3, and the two bars 20 and 21 are forced downwardly upon it by means of the cam and its operating lever.
What I claim is:
1. In a press, a stationary bottom bar having two upper sides arranged at an angle to each other, a side bar secured to one of the sides of the bottom bar and forming with it an angular groove, a movable top bar having two lower sides arranged at an angle to each other and having their apex arranged to one side of the apex of the bottom bar, a side bar secured to one of the sides of the top bar and forming with it an angular groove, and means for forcing downwardly the top bar and the side bar secured to it.
2. In a press, a stationary bottom bar having two upper sides arranged at an angle to each other, a laterally adjustable side bar secured to one of the sides of the bottom bar, a movable top bar having two lower sides arranged at an angle to each other and having their apex arranged to one side of the apex of the bottom bar, a laterally adjustable side bar secured to one of the sides of the top bar, said top and bottom bars constituting an adjustable press chamber, and means for forcing downwardly the top bar and the side bar secured to it.
3.
