Be it known that I, ELLwooD V. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Filing-Cabinets, ofwhich the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in cabinets for filing phonographic record disks and similar articles.

The object of my invention is to provide a filing device with a series of holders for the record disks or other articles, which holders are held in series in a normal position and which are independently movable from the normal position to a position forwardly thereof, to permit the disks or other articles to be readily removed therefrom, together with means to retain the holders in either of said positions, the means being operative to release the holders, and means to automatically move each individual holder from its normal position when released.

With the above and related objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Figure 1 is a transverse, vertical section through a filing cabinet embodying my invention, on line 1 1 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 2 is a front view thereof, partly broken away and partly in section, on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, 3 designates a cabinet or casing which may be of any suitable shape and size for its intended purpose.

Within the cabinet 3 is arranged a series of holders 4 which are adapted to receive record disks or similar articles 9 and which are provided with hooks 5 hooked over a rod 6 which is supported by suitable brackets 7 depending from the top wall 8 of the cabinet 3. T he hooks 5 support the holders 4 in a manner to permit them to swing upon the rod 6, independently of each other, from` a normal position, shown by full lines in Fig. 1, to a position forwardly thereof, as shown by dot-and-dash lines in Fig. 1.

with a depression 10 which receives the record disk 9 and retains it in place within the holder. l/Vhen the record disks 9 are resting within the depressions 10 in the holders 4, the forward portions of the disks project beyond the forward portions of the holders 4, as clearly shown in Fig. 1; and, when any one of the holders 4 is moved from its normal position in the series of holders to the position shown by dot-and-dash lines in F ig. 1, the projection of the disk 9 forwardly of the holder 4 permits the disk to be readily grasped by hand and removed from the holder.

The relation of the bodies of the holders 4 and the disks 9 contained therein to the supporting rod 6 from which the holders are suspended is such that the weight of the holders and the disks tends to' move the holders from the normal position shown by full lines to the position shown by dotanddash lines; and the holders 4 are held in the normal or full line position by latch devices or arms 11 and 12 arranged in alternate succession and pivotally connected to arms 13 projecting downwardly from the holders 4 in alternate succession, as shown in the drawings. r1`he latch arms 11 and 12 extend forwardly from the arms 18 through openings 14 and 15, respectively, in the forward wall of the cabinet 3. rEhe latch arms 11 and 12 are provided with teeth 16 and 17, which are adapted to engage bars 18 and 19 and retain the holders 4 in the normal or full line position afrainst their tendency to move to the forward or dot-and-dash line position. rThe forward ends of the latcharms 11 and 12 terminate in suitable handles 2O and 21 by means of which they may be raised to disengage their teeth 18 and 17 from the bars 18 and 19 to permit the holders to move by gravity from the normal position to the forward position. The forward movement of the holders 4 is limited by teeth 22 and 23 which project downwardly from the latch arms 11 and 12 and which are adapted to engage the bars 18 and 19 when the holders reach the forward or dot-and-dash line position; and, when the holders reach this forward or Adotand-dash line position, the teeth 22 and 28 fall into pockets 24 and 25 formed in theV bars 18 and 19 and prevent the return of the holders 4 to the normal or full line position until the latch arms 11 and 12 are raised to raise the teeth 22 and 23 from within the pockets 24 and 25.

The forward ends of the latch arms 11 are arranged in a plane above the plane of the forward ends of the latch arms 12, and the purpose of this is to provide a construction in which the latch arms may be arranged in staggered relation to each other, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, for the purpose of spacing the handles 20 and 21 both vertically and horizontally, thereby permitting the holders 4 to be arranged in close relation to each other and at the same time allowing suflicient space between adjacent handles 2O and 21 to permit the latch arms 11 and 12 to be readily manipulated by hand.

'The forward wall of the cabinet 3 has an opening 26 therein through which the record disks 9 may be readily removed from and replaced within the holders 4; and, when the holders 4 are in the normal or full line position, the opening 26 may be closed by suitable doors 27 which are hinged, at 28, to the cabinet 3.

The handle 20 and 21 of the latch arms 11 andV 12 are provided with suitable blades or pads 30 and 31respectively, to receive numbers or letters for the purpose of identifying particular record disks or other articles within the holders 4.

Normally, the holders 4 and their latch arms 11 and 12 are in the position shown by full lines in Fig. 1. When, however, it is desired to remove any particular record from its holder, the latch arm of the holder is raised todisengage its tooth 16 or 17 from the bar 18 or 19 and to permit the holder to move by gravity to the dot-and-dash line position inwhich the disk 9 may be readily withdrawn from the holder. When Ythe record disk isy replaced within-the holder 4, the tooth 22 or 23 of the latch arm of the holder resting within the pocket 24 or `25`prevents the return of the holder to normal position by the introduction of the record disk thereto; and, after the record disk has been replaced within the holder, th'elatch arm 11 or 12 is raised to raise the tooth 22 or 23 from the pocket 24 or 25, andthe latch arm is then pushed back to return the holder 4 to normal position, whereupon the tooth 16 or 17 of the latch arm is rengaged with the bar 18 or 19 to retain the holder in its normal position.

and the latchk devices for controlling the holders. y l Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. rlChe combination of a supporting frame, a holder pivoted to the frame to swing by gravity from a normal position to a position forwardly thereof `when released, a retaining bar secured to the support, and a latch pivoted to the holder and resting normally on said bar and` having a tooth engaging said bar and retaining the holder in said normal` position, said latch being operative to release the holder, and said tooth being beveled rearwardlyr and upwardly causing it to raise the latch and ride over said bar when the holder is manually returned to said normal position.

2. rlhe combination of a Vsupporting frame, Va holder pivoted to the frame to swing by gravity from a normal position to a position forwardly thereof when released, a retaining bar secured to the support, and a latch pivoted to the holder and having a tooth adapted to engage the bar and retain the holder in said normal position and having a part adapted to e11- gage the bar and limit the movement of the holder from said normal position when the latch is operated to disenga'ge the tooth from the bar'.

3. The combination of a supporting frame, a holder pivoted to the frame to swing by gravity from a normal positionto a position forwardly thereof when released, a retaining bar secured to the support, and a latch pivoted to the holder and having a tooth adaptedV to engage the bar and retain the holder in said normal position and having a part adapted to engage the bar. and limit the movement of the holder from said normal position when the latch is operated to disengage the toothl from the bar, said latch resting normally on the bar, and said tooth being beveled rearwardly and upwardly causing it to raise the latch and ride over said bar when the holder is manually returned to said normal position. 4. rlhe combination of a supporting frame, a holder having its upper portion pivoted to the frame to swing by gravity beneath `its pivot from a normal position to a position forwardly thereof when released, and means to .retain the holder in said normal position, said means being operative to release the holder.

5.
