Description

J. T. CAREAGA.
NEEDLE. APPLICATION FILED SEPT-1.1917
Patented May 25, 1920.
UNITED JUAN 'I'. CAREAGA, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
NEEDLE.
Application filed September 1. 1917.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JUAN T. CAREAGA, a citizen of the United. States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved needle in which the ter minal having the thread receiving eye therein is split in such manner as to permit the thread to be quickly and conveniently threaded in the eye and which will effectively prevent accidental displacement of the thread from the eye.
Another object is to provide. a cutting edge at the inner terminal of the eye or thread receiving opening by which the thread may be conveniently cut.
A still further object is the provision of a needle provided with a convenient finger grip to prevent the needle from slipping through the fingers when sewing.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the improved needle,
Fig. .2 represents an enlarged elevation of the terminal of the needle having the thread receiving eye therein,
Fig. 3 represents a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4: represents a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view through the needle, taken at right angles to Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 is a similar view through a modified form of the needle, and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional. view through a further modified form of'the needle.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates the tapered body of the needle provided at one terminal with the point 6 and connected at its opposite terminal with the reduced shank Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1920.
Serial No. 189,311.
7 carrying the head 8. A thread receiving eye 9 is formed in the head 8 and the wall of the eye or opening 9 at its inner end is beveled to provide a substantially V-shaped cutting edge 10 for severing the thread when brought into engagement therewith, as by a rearward movement of the needle.
At one side of the eye 9, the head 8 is formed with a slit 11 defining the inner and outer overlapping lingers 12 and 13, respectiveiy. The terminal of the inner finger 12 is pointed and is normally retained in snug engagement with the inner surface of the outer finger 18 by the inherent resiliency of the material from which the needle is constructed, whereby the terminal of the slit 1.1 adjacent the eye 9 is normally retained closed to prevent accidental displacement of the thread through the slot. The terminal of the outer linger 13 is enlarged as indicated at 14 and overlies the extreme outer terminal of the head 8. The enlarged terminal 14: of the finger 13 provides a finger grip for-convenience in flexing the finger 13 to facilitate insertion of the thread.
The body 5 of the needle is formed with diametrically opposed and longitudinally extending grooves 15. Each groove is concave in cross section and provided with a series of parallel ribs 16 disposed inwardly of the exterior surface of the body 5 and extending throughout the entire length of the groove. The ribs 16 are designed. to prevent the fingers from slipping upon the needle during sewing and in the construction of comparatively large needles the grooves 15 are preferably of such size as to partially receive the finger tips.
In the modification of the invention illustrated in Fig. 5, the body portion 5 of the needle is formed with a longitudinal slot 17 extending entirely through the body for convenience in gripping the latter when sewing.
In the modification of the invention illustrated in. Fig. 6, the needle body 5 is provi ded. with longitudinal grooves 18 similar to the grooves 15 shown in the form of the in.- vention. illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3. In this type of the needle, the portion of the body 5" lying between the two grooves 18 is formed with a plurality of spaced apertures 19 to prevent accidental slipping of the needle in the fingers.
What 1 claim is A needle comprising a body having an eye at one end and its other end pointed, said body being enlarged from a point spaced from the eye and gradually tapering to the pointed end and having an elongated concaved groove on each side terminating short of the pointed end of said body, and
