Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 134,132, dated December 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MONGENA DUNN, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Apparatus for Extinguishing Fires, of which the following is a specification The nature of my invention consists, first, in combining with a suitable carriage a rigid hose-pipe so arranged that it can be elevated from ahorizontal to a perpendicular position or to any desired angle; second, in combining with said pipe a flexible nozzle so arranged in connection with a chain or rod that it may discharge the water at any desired angle with the line of the pipe; third, in so arranging the pipe that it may be turned on its axis, which turning, in connection with the flexible nozzle, enables the operator to cause the water to be discharged in any direction.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end. elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail, showing the nozzle.
Let A represent the carriage, which may be made in any suitable style and of any desirable material. B is a standard-frame, so arranged that when the machine is not in use it may be lowered to a horizontal position, it being pivoted at b, Fig. 2. O G are braces, which connect with the frame B and carriage A. These are pivoted at c, Fig. 1, and are connected to the frame B by a small stud or pin. F is a swinging socket attached to the rear of the carriage, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Through this socket F a rigid pipe, E, passes. This pipe can be made in sections of any desired length, and is provided with a swivel-joint, D, and a hand-wheel, I, so that the pipe may be turned on its axis. H is a boss and sleeve which may be placed at any desired point on the pipe, and serves as a device for connecting the hoisting-chain K to the pipe E. A small channel is made through the boss H, just within the sleeve, for the purpose of allowing the chain or cord G to pass and to hold it in position. L is a winding barrel, about which the chain K K is wound. N N
are sheaves located, as shown in Figs. land 2, and serve to guide the chain K K.
To elevate the pipe E, I have only to connect the chain K K to the boss H, then turn the barrel L. This can be arranged with any desired amount of purchase so that a single man can raise any length of pipe.
E, Fig. 4, is a flexible nozzle, and consists of an interior of rubber or some similar material, the exterior consisting of coiled wire, so that the whole, when left to itself, will stand straight with the pipe E, Fig. 4.. G is a chain or rod connected to the end of the nozzle and passing down to the lever 9, Fig. 1.
By drawing on the rod or chain G the nozzle E may be bent in any desired direction, as
shown in Fig. 4.. By turning the pipeE on its axis, which can be done by the handwheel I, and deflecting the nozzle E by the chain G, as above, a stream of water may be sent in any direction.
P P, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, are ladders supported upon the carriage by the uprights R R R B. These ladders may be of the ordinary construction, or they may be made of tubes and arranged so that they may telescope together, and thus form an extension ladder of any desirable length.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with the carriage A, the rigid pipe E E, the nozzle E, arranged substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the pipe E, swivel D, and hand-wheel I, the whole so arranged that the pipe E may be turned on its axis, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The flexible nozzle E and the chain or rod G, operating substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. The carriage A, arranged as described, and having the standards R R, in combinaition with the extension ladder P P, as set orth.
