PATEN OFFICE.-
SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR T0 MANUEL ADRIAN, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
INTERNAL-COMBUSTIQN Eli E'INE.
- fornia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specithereon.
fication.
My invention relates broadly to the arrangement of the magneto, governor, carbureter and water pump of an engine with relation to the engine base and cylinder, and particularly to the combination of the water pump with the other devices mentioned.
It is the object of my invention to provide such an arrangement of the magneto, governor, carburetor and water pump, together with such working parts as may be connected thereto, as to secure synchronous action between the same at all times and at the same time simplify the construction and nation and relative arrangement ,of parts,
members and features all as hereinafter described,.shown in the drawings and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of an engine and its base embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the governor in position on the vertical shaft forming a part of my invention.
Fig. 3 is a sectionalview on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatical plan view of the throttle valve and its connections to the governor.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference indicate similar parts throughout theseveral views.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 is the engine base and 2 the cylinder mounted thereon, the crank shaft be ing shown at 3 and having agear 4 mounted At-5 is shown a shaft operating in bearings 6 and parallelly disposed with relation to the said cylind 2. Shaft 5 is operated through, the med ,m of gear 7 mounted thereon and meshing with gear 4. To the upper end o shaft is connected a Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 25, 1919.

magneto 8 the same being mounted securely on cylinder 2 and connected to a spark plug as 9 by wire 10. Between the shaft 5 and the magneto shaft 11 is inserted an impulse starter as 12, of any suitable'form such as disclosed inmy 'Patent No. 1,291,097, of
January 14, 1919.
At 13 is shown a governor bowl fixedly mounted on shaft 5 and opening upwardly and having a recess 14 formed inthe bottom thereof in which are mounted weighted rocker-arms 15 on pivots 16, said recess 14 being adapted to hold a quantity of lubricating oil 17. Rocker-arms 15 support a member 18 freely movable in a vertical direction but prevented from moving sidewise off ofarms 15 by the side walls of recess 14. Supported'in turn on member 18 is a freely movable member 19 which projects sufficiently far up the shaft 5 to engage one end of the throttle operating lever 20. Lever 20 is pivoted at any suitable point as 21 and is attached, by its shorter arm to the stem 22 of valve 23,;a' complete disclosure of the preferred form of the throttle being made in the application signed by me on the 19th day of February, 1919, Serial Number 279,207, filed Feb. 25, 1919, and entitled Carbureter. The action of the rocker-arm 15, when shaft 5 is rapidly revolved is to lift members 18 and 19 and thereby operate throttle 23 through the medium of lever 20.
To the lower end of shaft 5 and preferably below gear 7 is placed a gear water pump 24. The first gear 25 is mounted on shaft 5 and the second gear 26 meshing therewith is an idler mounted in casing 27 and both gears revolving in the direction in- Patented May 25, 192o. I
dicated bythe arrows- Water is admitted 'at 28 through pipe 29 from a source of supply not shown and is carried by the meshing gears to pipe 30'through which it is forced to the water jacket of cylinder 1. An overe flow is of course supplied at some suitable point as at 31.
.In the construction and arrangement as pulse starter, a governor adapted to carry its own lubricating oil, and a simple gear water pump.
It is understood, of course, that changes in form, construction, arrangement and operation may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a water cooled engine of the type disclosed, of a single crank-shaft driven shaft vertically and revolubly mounted on the exterior thereof, a Water pump, a governor, an impulse starter, and a magneto operatively mounted in axial alinement with said shaft and operated by the revolution thereof, and a throttle operating lever arranged to be actuated by the operation of said governor.
2. The combination with a water cooled engine of the type disclosed, of a single crank-shaft driven shaft vertically and revolubly mounted on the exterior thereof, a Water pump, av governor, an impulse starter, and a magneto operatively mounted in axial alinement With said shaft and operated by the revolution thereof the said governor comprising a bowl secured to said shaft and having a chamber adapted to, contain lubricating oil, weighted arms pivotally mounted in said chamber, a sleeve concentrically mounted on said shaft and actuated by said governor, and a throttle operating lever arranged to be actuated by the operation of said sleeve.
I 3. The combination with an engine of the type disclosed, of a single driven shaft revolubly mounted on the exterior thereof in parallel relation to the cylinder thereof, a gear mounted on the crank shaft of the engine, a gear meshing therewith mounted on said driven shaft, a water pump operatively connected to one end of said driven shaft adjacent said crank shaft, a governor concentrically mounted upon said drive shaft adjacent said; crank shaft, throttle lever engaging means operated by said governor concentrically mounted on said drive shaft above said, governor, an impulse starter concentrically mounted upon said drive shaft a distance above said throttle lever engaging means, and a magneto mounted in axial alinement with said drive shaft and in operative engagement with said impulse starter.
Executed this 19th day of February, 1919.
