RAILROAD-SWITCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May '25. 1920.
j Application filed December 18," 1919. Seria1Z No.*345,896.
To aZZ whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, Josa TORYOWSKI, a citizen of Austria, residing at South St. Paul, in the county of Dakota and State of Minnessota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Switches,
of which the following is av specificatiom.
reference being therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to railroad switches and has for its object to provide a temporary switch which may be easily and quickly moved from place to place and so disposed and connected between parallel tracks, whereby a train or car on one of said tracks may be switched to the adjacent track.
A further object is to form the switch member from rails of the conventional type and to cut away the flanges and web of the rail so that the rails will engage the inner rails of the adjacent parallel'tracks, thereby allowing the treads of the rails forming the temporary switch to be disposed over the treads of the permanent track rails and terminate in registration with the treads of the permanent rails, also to provide bracing means adapted to arch over the adjacent inner rails of the permanent tracks, thereby maintaining the rails forming the temporary switch in theirproper spaced relation to each other.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope "of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1
In the drawings Figure l is a plain view of a road bed showing parallel tracks and the temporary switch applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the switch showing the same detached.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals l and 2 designate parallel tracks and 3 the temporary switch. Temporary switch 3 is formed from a pair of rails 4, which rails are adapted to arch the space between the tracks so that a train or car may be moved from one track to the other. Rails 4: have their flanges and webs cut away as at 5 for the reception of rails 1 and 2 of the permanent track thereby leaving the tread portions 6 above rails 1 and 2 of the permanent track so that the wheel flanges of the train can pass over the treads 1 and 2% The ends of the rails at are curved as at 7 and have their flange and web portions cut away as at 8, allowing the tread portion 7 to be disposed over the tread portions of the rails of the permanent tracks so that the wheels of the cars will ibe guided by the tread 7 so that the flanges of the wheels will run off the ends of the temporary switch, in such a manner that theflanges of the wheels will engage the innergsides of the treads of the permanent rails. To-prevent the spreading of the ends 9, said ends are provided with angle brackets 10 which extend outwardly and downwardly and are adapted to be spiked to the cross ties thereby preventing spreading or springing of the ends 9. Rails l are held in spaced relation to each other by bars 11 and 12, which bars have their ends bent at right angles so as to form portions 13 which are in a vertical position. Portions 13 have extending outwardly there from threaded members 14 which. pass through the webs of rails a and by means of nuts 15 the rails are maintained in spaced relation to each other. Bars 11 and 12 arch the permanent rails l and 2*, but it will be seen that they terminate so that they will not interfere with the movement of the wheelfla-nges over the treads of the temporary switch. Pivoted as at 16 to the bars 12 are angle members 17 which extend.
toward the endsbf the switch and terminate in threaded members 17 which members are adapted to be threaded through the rails 41- for additionally bracing the same and maintaining them in their relative parallel positions.
When it is desired to move a train from one track to another the temporary switch is placed in the position shown in Fig. 1 and members 10 spiked to the ties, then the train or car can be easily moved. It is to be understood that by making the central portion of the switch curved it will be possible to move cars from concentrically disposed tracks if sodesired.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:-
A temporary switch between parallel tracks, said temporary switch comprising a pair of rails, said rails being normally held spaced from each other by arching members arching the adjacent rails on the inner sides of the parallel tracks, cut away portions in V webscut away so that the treads thereof will register With the treads of the rails of the permanent tracks and brackets carried by the treads at the ends of the rails of the temporary switch and adapted to be secured to the cross ties for preventing lateral spring ing or spreading of said tread portions.
In testnnony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature. v r
JOSATOItY OWSKI.
