Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, lemon Coornn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, in the city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanyin drawings, which form a part thereof.
y invention relates to hose clamps and more particularly to a type thereof wherein the clamp is tightened by means of a screw bolt passing through and engaging opposed lugs upon the clamp.
A clamp made in accordance with my 1nvention is composed of two sections, the greater portion of one of which is adapted to bear upon the outer periphery of the other so as to facilitate the application of the clamp to the hose. Both of these sections are composed of segments of a circle, one of the'segments being materially longer than the other for the two-fold object of insuring continuity of the gripping area upon the hose and permitting the ad ustment of one of these sections with relation to the other to permit variance in the diameter of the clamp. Each sections is provided with a substantially radially projecting lug, having an opening therethrough adapted to register with the opening in the other lug and receive a screw-bolt for drawing the lugs toward each other to develop the desired constriction of the clamp. To provide a tongue spanning the gap between the two radial lugs, by means of which the clamp is contracted upon the hose, I form one of the lu s from the body of the larger segment at a point intermediate the ends thereof. These lugs are made of a length so that the stresses applied thereto by the bolt will come sufficiently close to the clamp body to avoid the necessity for reinforcing these lugs. By this general arrangement the clamp may be made throughout of material having uniform width, thus avoiding waste in the production of the clamp.
The interlocking connection between the two sections is so constructed that when the clamp has been adjusted and fitted to the hose, one of the interlocking members may be forced downwardly upon the other to form a more permanent bond between the members and avoid projecting portions about the clamp.
The lap tongue is also stiffened adjacent the abutment upon the larger segment in a manner to prevent the buckling of the tongue between the lugs with a resultant interruption in the continuity of the clamping action about the hose.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claim hereto appended.

Like letters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, the clamp is composed of two sections a and b of substantially the same width throughout and of sufficient flexibility to permit the clamp to conform to the outside of the hose, when clamping it upon the nipple to which it is to be attached. Each of these sections a and 6 comprises the segment of a circle of substantially the same diameter and each is provided with a substantially radially projecting lug c and d respectively having registering bolt openings therein adapted to receive a screw bolt 6 having a nut f. The lug c is formed intermediate the ends of the segment a and integrally therewith, the drawn up portion being closed in a manner to avoid any substantial interruption in the continuity of the clamping area presented by the section a.
By forming this lug intermediate the ends of said section a one end of the section constitutes a lap tongue 9' projecting from one side of said lug which lap tongue is provided with a circumferentially extending stiffening depression h of suflicient length to span any gap which will normally be presented between the two lugs when the clamp is applied to a hose. The manner of forming the lug will also give two plies, reinforcing each other in a manner to stiffenthe The other section Z2 has the end thereof turned so as to project substantially radially of the clamp and folded upon itself so as to be sufiiciently stifi' to withstand the stresses thereon, by reason of the fact that this lug will also be two-ply in thickness.
The two sections ab are provided with interlocking means, as the series of tongues 2' carried by the section Z) and formed integrally therewith by being merely forced outwardly from the body of said section, and a series of cooperating openings j formed in the end of the section at opposite to the lap tongue 9. I provide a plurality of such tongues and openings so as to not only facilitate the adjustment of the clamp and the variance in its diameter but to cause a plurality of tongues to simultaneously engage in a plurality of openings in a manner to hold the section Z) in the desired surface contact with the inner face of the section awhen the diameter of the clamp is reduced.
When a clamp has been adjusted to the hose and has been tightened to the desired extent, a hammer, wrench or other tool may be used for forcing all of the tongues 2' downwardly so as to bring them substantially within the outer plane of the clamp, those tongues which are passed through the opening 2' being clamped down upon the section a adjacent said openings in a manner to form a more permanent connection than is possible with merely a slip joint.
Vhen attaching the clamp to a hose, the bolt 6 may be either partially or wholly unscrewed from the nut f and the section I) removed from the section a entirely, or it may be swung about the said bolt so to permit the separation of the end of the lap g from the other end of the section a in a manner to permit the clamp to be passed about the hose. Thereafter, the section b is brought down uponthe tongue 2' with the lug d opposite to the lug 0 and the other end of said section I) is inserted beneath that end of the section at having the series of openings j therein until one or more of the tongues i have, passed through the openings j. The forming up of the said tongues 2', that is their projection upwardly and toward the of a circle,
lug '03, will through a camming action facilitate connection of the two sections after the section a has been applied to the hose. The two sections having been connected, the bolt 6 is used to draw the clamp sufficiently tightly upon the hose to cause a tight joint between the hose and the nipple. When the clamp has been adjusted all of the tongues i may be forced downwardly into the openings in the section b or against the body of the section a intermediate the openings 7'. The diameter of the ring will be determined by the number of tongues i which are passed through the openings j. It will be observed that whether one or all of the tongues i are passed through the openings j, the entire portion of the section Z) which underlies the section a will be held by these tongues in close contact with the section (1.
Having described the invention What I claim as new and desire to have protected by Letters Patent is A hose clamp composed of a section of substantially the same width throughout, formed of flexible material, said section having a drawn up, closed and pierced section, forming a radially projecting lug intermediate the ends quence of openings toward one end thereof, said section being formed in the segment a second segmental section of a shorter arc than said first named section, and also formed of flexible material of substantially the same width throughout, and of substantially the same width as the other section, said last named section having one end thereof turned at substantially right angles and pierced, and a sequence of flexible tongues adapted to cooperate with the openings in said other section, a bolt adapted to pass through said lugs respectively, and a nut cooperating with said bolt.
