MEANS 'IO PROPEL BOATS OR THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1920.
Application filed December 26, 1 919. Serial No. 347,465.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, AoJuTon LoUIs PHILIPPE TALBOT, a British subject, residing in the city of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means to Propel Boats or the like; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. I
The present invention relates to improvcments in means for propelling boats or the like, and the main object of the invention is to provide a new and effective device for propelling boats which will, by its particular construction, enable a person to row with 7 two sets of oars simultaneously and thus impart more speed to the boat.
Another object of this invention isto provide a device, whereby one or two sets of oars may be used by the same person. The apparatus is so arranged that two persons can also simultaneously actuate said oars by using both of its ends.
A further object is to provide a device of this character whereby the device may be operated from either end of the boat.
A better understanding of the invention will be obtained from the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a top view of a boat to which the invention is applied.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a boat illustrating the particular form of the members to which the oars are affixed. It also illustrates the method of adapting said members to the slotted lugs provided on the boat.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a boat illustrating how the cars are operated by the oars supporting members.
Fig. i is a plan view of one of the oars supporting members.
Fig. 5 illustrates the particular shape of oars forming part of this invention.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
In the drawings:
1 is a boat provided with the usual seats. 2 and 3 are slotted lugs rigidly secured to the sides of the boat and adapted to receive the oars supporting members 4 which project horizontally therethrough. The oars supporting member I is preferably made of round iron or of any suitable material and 1s made so as to form at each end, a handle 5. Provided intermediate thereof and rigidly secured thereto are the brackets 6 made so as to slide between the two lugs 3. On said brackets 6 are secured the oars 7. Said oars are provided with a slot 8 in which fits the brackets 6. At the uppermost end of said oars are also provided holes 9 which are made to register on the hooks 10 provided on the gunwales and on which hooks are pivoted the said oars 7.
WhAat I claim as my invention is:
1. a. comprising slotted lugs rigidly secured to the sides of a boat; oars supporting members slidably mounted in said lugs on each side of said boat; brackets rigidly secured on said oars supporting members and intermediate thereof; a hook rigidly secured on the gunwales of said boat; oars pivotally secured on said hooks at one end and loosely mounted intermediate thereof on said brackets substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described comprising slotted lugs rigidly secured to the sides of a boat; oars supporting members slidably mounted in said slotted lugs, said oars supporting members being provided at each end with a portion bent at right angle to form handles, brackets rigidly secured intermediate of said handles on the said oars supporting members and made to slide between the two slotted lugs on each side of said boat; hooks secured on the gunwales of said boat; oars pivotally secured on said hooks at one end and being provided intermediate thereof with slots adapted to register on the aforesaid brackets to which they are loosely secured substantially as described.
Signed at Montreal, Quebec, Canada, this 26th day of November, 1919.
ADJUTOR LOUIS PHILIPPE TALBOT.
