HENRY E. LEONARD, OF BRQOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO U. B. COTTRELL 8; SONS COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. $5., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
SHEET-REGISTERING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application filed December 15. 1917. f Serial No. 207,338.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. LEONARD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Registering Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide I10\ el means for registering sheets, which means include a rotary carrier having thereon sheet gripping and registering devices 'whereby the sheets may be accurately registered on the carrier without stopping the sheets and before the grippers are caused to close on the sheets; said devices being interconnected.
The gripping and registering devices are.
mounted on a common axis and the registering device preferably has a yielding lost motion connection with the gripping device so as to permit the grippers to close on the sheets after the registering fingers have reached the limit of their forward or registering movement.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 represents in top plan, so much of a sheet handling mechanism as will give a clear understanding of my invention, the parts being in the positions which they assume when the registering device is at the limit of its registering movement and the grippers are closed.
Fig. 2 is a section taken in the plane of the line ITII of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail section taken in the plane of the line III-III of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail section taken in the same plane as Fig. 3, with the grippers open.
Fig. 5 is a detail section taken in the plane of the line V-V of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 6 is a detail section in the same plane as Fig. 5, with the grippers open and the registering fingers at the limit of their rearward movement.
The rotary carrier is denoted by 1, its shaft by 2, and the frame by 3. The usual cutaway portion 4: is provided in the rotary carrier for permitting the operation of the gripping and registering devices.
The gripping device comprises the grippers 5, their rocking rod 6 suitably mounted in the ends of the rotary carrier, which gripper rod is shown as provided with the usual tw0- armed lever 7, 8, the arm 8 being provided with a stud or roller 9 arranged in position to be engaged by the cam 10 on the frame 3 to open the grippers. The arm 7 is provided with the usual rod 11 sliding through the stud 12 and the spring 13 interposed between the stud 12 and the collar 14, tending to rock the rod 6 to close the grippers 5.
The registering device is herein shown as a set of fingers 15 having sheet engaging ends 16, said fingers being loosely mounted on the gripper rod 6 and having a lost motion connection therewith through elongated slots 17 in the fingers and screws 18 passing through said slots into engagement with the gripper rod. A coil spring 19 surrounds the rod 6 and has one end engaged with the gripper 5 and the other end engaged with the registerin finger 15, tending to hold the registering finger at the limit of its forward or registering movement, the spring permitting a lost motion connection between the gripping device and the registering device so as to permit the grippers to close on the sheet or sheets after the registering fingers have reached the limit of their forward movement.
In operation, as the sheets are fed onto the rotary carrier, the heads of the sheets will be engaged by the registering fingers and the sheets properly registered by the forward movement of the registering fingers just before the grippers in their forward movement are closed onto the sheets. This result is being accomplished during the rotary movement of the carrier, thus obviating the necessity of stopping the sheets on their way to the carrier and also facilitating the rapid handling of the sheets.
Ttis evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence'I do not wish to limit myself to the structure herein shown and described, but
What I claim is:
1. A rotary sheet carrier, a rocking gripper rod, grippers fixed to rock therewith, registering fingers having a limited rocking movement on said rod, and spring means forming a yielding connection between said fingers and grippers.
2. A rotary sheet carrier, a rocking gripforward or registering movement, to permit per rod, grippers fixed to rock therewith, the grippers to close after the fingers have 10 registering fingers loosely mounted on said reached the limit of their forward moverod and having a lost motion connection ment. therewith, coil springs surrounding said rod In testimony that I claim the foregoing and having their ends engaged with the as my invention I have signed my name grippers and the fingers respectively, tendthis tenth day of December, 1917. ing to hold the fingers at the limit of their HENRY E. LEONARD.
