ALBERT EDWARD SHINER, OF LONDON,` ENGLAND.
ROTARY PUMP.
Application filed Apr1 19,
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT EDWARD SHiNnR, a subject of the .King4 of Great Britain, residing at London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements iii Rotary Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rotary pumps of the kind having a pendulum rotor the stem of which slides in an oscillatory member, the outlet for the fluid being through the stem of the rotor.
According to the present invention, particularly applicable to a pump having a short throw, the oscillating member in which the stem of the pendulum slides is made in one piece having a radial slot from end to end for receiving the pendulum stem, and a central outlet for the liquid or fluid pumped.
A further improvement applicable to a pump for pumping air or other compressible fluid consists in so arranging the oscillating member in relation to the outlet passage in the stem of the pendulum that, when the pendulum is on the top dead cen` ter, it prevents the escape of fluid from thc outlet end of the pump back to the inlet.
A still further improvement relates to providing the pendulum bob of a pump used for pumping liquids with tangential channels. adapted to throw the liquid against the wall of the pump chamber, or with pockets or cavities in its periphery to receive any solid matter that may pass into the pump, and thereby to make it more eflicient in action.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention,
Figure l is a view of the pump with one of the end plates removed to show the inner working parts.
Fig. 2 is a view looking from the right of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a central transverse section of the oscillating member in which the pendulum stem works.
Figs. fl and 5 are side views of the pendun lum bob showing different forms of channels in its periphery.
Fi 6 is a section taken on the line w, :v Fig. I, and

Fig. 7 is a side view of a pendulumhaving recesses or pocketsformed in the periphery of the bob.
Fig. S shows a modified construction which provides for locking the fluid when the pendulum is .at the top dead center.
A is the pump chamber which is closed at the sides by plates C, D; G is the driving shaft; H the eccentric fixed on the driving shaft; J is the pendulum bob; K the stem of the pendulum; and Q the outlet channel formed in the stem K. S is a cy lindrical oscillatory piece working in a cylindrical recess formed in an extension of the pump chamber.
The oscillatory piece S is slotted at s throughout its length to receive the stem of the pendulum, and has an outlet orifice at t for the outlet of the liquid or fluid. P is the inlet to, and R the outlet from the pump casing. This pump will work in either direction, if desired.
In the periphery of the pendulum bob in pumps used for pumping liquids I provide a number of tangential channels W which extend across the cylindrical face of the bob either parallel to the axis, or in an inclined direction as shown in Fig. 4, or said tangential channels may be double helical shaped as shown in Fig. 5. These tangential channels have the effect of throwing the liquid against the wall of the pump chamber. In some cases in lieu of channels suoli as W, I provide in the periphery of the bob and arranged .in any suitable formation a number of pockets or recesses M as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. These pockets crrecesses serve to collect any solid matter that may pass into the pump.
In the case of a pump for pumping air or other compressible fluid, I may arrange the oscillating member S closer to the pump chamber as shown in Fig. 8, so-that when the pendulum is at the top dead center, it closes the mouth of the channel Q, in the stem K, and thus prevents the fluid from escaping back to the inlet side of the pump while the pendulum is in this position.
