To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW MAGNUS PETERSON, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of New Athens, county of Harrison, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Caps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to chimney caps, and it has for its primary object to provide a cap structure for chimneys, composed of tiles or blocks and embodying means whereby said tiles or blocks are permanently secured against the common tendency to separate and become dislodged through long ex osure to the elements.
A further object is to provide a chimney cap composed of interfitting blocks bound together in such manner that their relative arrangement is permanently maintainedirrespective of the extent of expansion and contraction to which they are subjected through wide rangesand rapid changes of temperature. p
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construction, arrangement of parts and combinations of elements which will hereinafter be fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a top plan view of the invention with portions of the concrete layer broken away; and

The chimney cap comprises in its construction a plurality of tiles or blocks, of molded clay or other suitable material, mounted upon the upper course of bricks 1 of the chimney. Said blocks are of two types, lineal blocks 2 and corner blocks 3. Each lineal block is of approximately L-shape in cross section with the horizontal member 2 thereof directed inward and constituting a flat ledge which extends throughout the length of the block, while the upright wall member 2* thereof rises to a considerable height above ledge 2 and may Specification of Letters Patent.

The corner blocks 3 correspond in shape to the lineal blocks 2, except that each has at its outer end a wall member 3 lying at a right angle to the wall member 3* thereof, as shown.
Formed in the ledge portion 3 of each corner block adjacent to the angle between the wall members 3 and 3 is a socket 4, and extending inward longitudinally from said socket throughout the length of said ledge is a groove or channel 5. Also extending at a right angle to said channel 5 from said socket to the inner lateral edge of said ledge is a groove or channel 6 Each of the lineal blocks 2 has extending from end to end of the ledge 2 thereof a groove or channel 7. The channels 7 of adjacent blocks 2 are disposed in alinement, and the channels of such of said blocks as abut against a corner block 3 register either with a channel 5 or a channel 6 of the latter, according as such block 2 alines with or is disposed at a right angle to the corner block.
A metal tie-rod 8 having downturned ends 8 is disposed within the alined channels at each of the opposite sides of the chimney cap with its said downturned ends 8 received within the socket 4 of the corner blocks 8 located on said side. In like manner tie the rods 9 extend across the ends of the cap, lying in the alined channels of said end, and have their downturned ends 9 received in the sockets of the corner blocks located on said end. Said rods 8 and 9, which are designed to secure the various blocks 2 and 3 in their proper relative positions, effectually preventing displacement or dislodgment,-are adapted to permit unobstructed expansion and contraction of the cap structure without in any way impairing their efiiciency as securing elements. To this end, the dimensions of the sockets 4 are made sufiiciently great to permit both of maximum expansion and maximum contraction of the blocks without at any time placing undue strain upon said rods; that is, said sockets are made of such dimensions that complete freedom of movement of the blocks is permitted within the range of expansion and contraction to which they are subjected under the influence of opposite extremes of temperature. a
The body portions of the tie-rods received in the channels are embedded in a layer 10 of concrete which is preferably disposed on the ledges 2" and 3 of the blocks, as shown; and, to avoid interference with free movement ofthe downturned ends of said rods in the sockets 4, the latter are filled with sand 11 after the introduction of said rods and before the application of the cement layer 10.
lVhen the chimney embodies a plurality of fines, as depicted in the drawings, a flat block or blocks 12 having a thickness corresponding to that of the ledges of the various blocks 2 and 3 is mounted on the division 13 which separates the fiues. Said block 12 has therein a longitudinally extending channel 1% adapted for the reception of a tie-rod 15. When such transverse tie-rod is employed, short registering grooves 1o are provided in the lineal blocks 2 against which the block or blocks 12 abut, such short grooves leading to sockets 17 in which the downturned ends of the rod 15 are received.
From the foregoing it will be understood that I provide a chimney cap which is not only extremely simple in construction, but which possesses superior durability.
lVhat is claimed is 1. A chimney cap comprising lineal blocks and corner blocks, each formed with an inwardly projecting ledge having a longitudinal channel in its upper face, each corner block also having a vertically disposed socket therein with which the longitudinal channel thereof communicates and having a laterally extending channel leading from said socket, and tie-rods disposed in said channels for securing said blocks against displacement, said rods having angular end portions received in the sockets of opposite corner blocks for interlocking the latter and the interposed lineal blocks in place.
2. A chimney cap comprising lineal blocks and corner blocks, each formed with an inwardly projecting ledge having a longitudinal channel in its upper face, each corner block also having a vertical socket therein with which the longitudinal channel thereof communicates and having a laterally extending channel leading from said socket, said channels and said sockets forming the four sldes of a rectangle, and a tle-rod disposed in the channels of each of said sides and having downturned ends received in the sockets of opposite corner blocks, said sockets having relatively large dimensions to permit of a limited range of movement of said blocks with respect to said rods.

A chimney cap comprising lineal blocks and corner blocks, each formed with an i11- wardly projecting ledge having a longitudinal channel in its upper face, each corner block also having a socket therein with which the longitudinal channel thereof communicates and having a laterally extending channel leading from said socket, said channels and said sockets forming the four sides of a rectangle,a tie-rod disposed in each of said sides and having downturned ends received in the sockets thereof, said sockets having relatively large dimensions to permit of a limited range of movement of said blocks with respect to said rods, a sand filling for said sockets and a protective covering for said rods mounted on the ledges of said blocks.
4:. A chimney cap comprising lineal blocks and corner blocks, each formed with an inwardly projecting ledge having a longitudinal channel in its upper face, each corner block also having a vertical socket therein with which the longitudinal channel thereof communicates and having a laterally extending channel leading from said socket, tie-rods disposed horizontally in said channels for securing said blocks against displacement, said rods having angular end portions received in the sockets of opposite corner blocks whereby the latter and the interposed lineal blocks are secured in place, and a layer of concrete mounted on said ledges in covering relation to saidrods.
