Be it known that I, JAMES ARTI-ron KID- wnLL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Lakewood, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check- Cabinets, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
T he objects ofthe invention are to provide improved operating and locking devices for the mechanism of a cabinet employed in registering the trade checks of a check credit system.4
The device hereinafter described is an improvement upon the cabinet illustrated and described in my former application for a patent in the UnitedL States, filed Gotober 22:3, i916, bearing Serial No. 524:32.
In the-present device many additional iinprovements are incorporated including locking means preventing the introduction of the check disks into the several feed slots of the machine.
It includes means for preventing simultaneously the actuating of the counting and registeringmechanism which will effectually prevent irresponsible parties from entering records therein.
It includes a registering key operatively connected with said locking device for the check slots, and also operatively connected with a bell which sounds when said key is actuated.`
It includes a series of subtracting levers for releasing one check at a time from each slot or check storing receptacle, a bell sounding device operated thereby, and means preventing the operation of the subtracting lever and bell sounding device when the registering key is locked from movement.
It includes a slidable push rod positioned to prevent the movement of the record operating key, and thereby also preventing the introduction of checks into the check slots, the sounding of the bell and the operation of the subtracting lever.
It includes a separate locking slide for the rear extremities of the dumping slides.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In these views A represents the casing B, B, B, the check receptacles into which the checks are introduced from above through graduated slots C, C, C, in the casing. l), D, are the subtracting slides which are provided with openings D', D corresponding in size with the diameters of the respective check receptacles, the openings in the respective receptacles and slides being normally in alinement with each other. Beneath the subtracting slides are shown the dumping slides E, E, E, having similar openings E, E normally out of alinement with and forward of the openings E on the subtracting slides. A key E2, operates each dumping slide, and a key leverE3 pivoted upon a rear shaft E* operates each subtracting slide by means of the intervening bell crank A spring E returns each sultracting slide and a spring EG returns each dumping slide.
F is a key which operates each registering and counting device which may be of any well known character. An arm F upon the key shaft F2 operates the actuating arm r3 of the register when the key is pressed down.
CT is a bell crank the clapper of which G is operatively connected with the movements of the registering key, and also with the movements of the subtracting lever, so that the operation of either will sound the bell. This is accomplished as follows:
1When the key is pressed in, a bell crank arm II operates a rod II which is connected by a rock arm II?, which descending strikes a lug II3 pivoted in the bell clapper, and sounds the bell when the record'key is released.
A spring h4' returns the rock arm H2 and bell crank I-I. A second spring H5 returns the bell clapper. When the subtracting levers are depressed and arm HG mounted upon a bar H7 underneath said levers is descrews pressed and operates the aforesaid rock arm by means of the link HS and sounds the bell.
I is a slide which is movable to cut 0H' ingress to the check receptacles. This slide is automatically operated by the movement of the bell crank H through the agency of the bell crank I and connecting rod I2. A rod J slidingly movable in the frame at J J passes in advance of all the registering keys and prevents their movement until the slide is pressed in When the keys Will pass through openings J2, J 2 therein. This rod is returned by means of the spring J 3, and the movement is adjusted by means of a screw J4.
It will be seen that when the locking rod J is set the machine is practically closed since the checks cannot be put into the receptacles, the registering keys cannot be operated, the subtracting lever is locked by the transverse bar, and the bell can not bev sounded.
The dumping slides are locked separately by means of a plate K in the rear of the machine Which is raised to cover the ends of the slides and lowered to release them. This is accomplished by means of a vertically movable bolt L for the lock L. This bolt engages the rock arm L2 Which engages and moves the plate K longitudinally, and or ins K', K operate in diagonal slots K2, 1x2 to alternately raise and lower the late K.

In a check cabinet, a series of graduated check receptacles, the Wall of said cabinet having inlet openings leading thereto, subtracting slides `underneath said receptacles and dumping slides beneath said subtracting slide, a bell, and registering devices, means for sounding said bell and for operatlng said registering devices, and se arate means for operating each of said slides, a slide for closing the said inlet openinfrs leading to said check receptacle, means Tor operating said closing slide, and a device for preventing the movements of said registering devices, a bell sounding device, a closing slide and subtracting slides, and a separate locking device for said dumpinof slides.
2. In a check cabinet, a series of graduated check receptacles, a slide for closing the entrance to said receptacles, a registering device i'or each receptacle, an operating key for each registering device, a bell sounding device and a subtracting slide underneath each check receptacle, said operating keys for said registering devices serving to actuate said closing slide, and bell sounding device, a locking means for all said registering operating keys, and means operatively connected with said subtracting keys for sounding said bell, said last named means preventing the operation of said subtracting slides when said registering operating keys are locked from movement substantially as described.
