IMPROVEMENT IN ORGAN-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1311,62 3, dated December 17, 187;?.
To all whom it may concern:
Re it known that I, GEORGE WOODS, of Cambridgeport, in the county of Middlesex and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Organ-Oase, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists, nrst, in a construction of the front projection of the organ, calculated to expose the keys and stops very prominently to view, when seen from the ends, whereby more of the characteristic features of an instrument are perceptible in that view, and the resemblance to a niere case is mate rially lessened, thereby greatly increasing the beauty of the instrument. The said improved construction is also designed to dispense with the projecting front. My invention consists, secondly, in a novel construction of the keyslip77 or iretwork piece in front of the keys 5 also, the ledge or projection below, in connection with the aforesaid arrangement of the iront projection. of the case whereby the said keyslip7 and ledge are extended around the corners so as to show in the aforesaid end views in a manner to lend additional features ot beauty to the instrument; and my invention consists, thirdly, in a construction of the fall or cover whereby it is adapted to the peculiarities ofthe organi'ront above mentioned, all as will be hereinafter described.

Fig. 2 is also an end elevation, but with the fall or cover raised, and represented in cross-section; and Fig. 3 is a top or plan view with the cover closed, sectioned horizontally at one corner, and completely broken through at the other.

The end pieces A are beveled on the corner, as shown at O, except at D, where a slight projection is formed the full width of the edge to make a finish or to harmonize with the ledge E and the part F of the fall when closed down, but said projection entends but slightly beyond the line B, to expose the keys G and the end H of the key-board in the end view, (see Fig. 2,) whereby the appearance of the instrument is rendered much more pleasing to the sense of beauty, and consequently more desir able. In consequence of this projection of the keys and key-board, the key-slips or fretwork front thereof I and the ledge E are extended around the corners to the face of the projection D, as shown at L and M, so that the front finish is extended to said projections and shows in the end views together with the keys, and the ledge affords a rest at the ends for the part F of the fall, the same as it affords for the front. The part F of the iali or cover for inclosing this projection of the key-board comprises the front a., top b d, and end pieces f, and is hinged to the front piece g, at IL, so that when the cover is raised by swinging the front part t' of the top over on the part j, as shown in Fig. 2, said part F will swing forward and rest right-side up on the part t in the same manner that it rests when closed7 thus preventing an ornamental and finished appearance when opened. The upper front portion g oi' the cover is rigidly attached at the upper edge to the under side ci" the part t' or" the top, and is thereby caused to assume a vertical position when the cover is raised, so as to hold the part F in the position above described.
These novel devices in the construction ot organ-cases afford more ornamental and desirable ones than those now in use, as will be readily seen by inspection of the drawing.
Havin g thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The extension of the key-slip I and the front ledge E around the corners to the face ot' projection D, substantially as specified.
2. The construction and arrangement of the fall or cover in the parts F, 9,15, and j, and the arrangement of the said part F with the ledge E M and projections D, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the projecting board and keys, cover or fall, and ledge E, substantially in the, manner described.
