SWING-POLE TRACK-HINGE FOR LITTEB-GARRIERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM STANLEY BEATY, of the town of Milton, in the county of Ha-lton in the Province of Ontario, Canada have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Swing Pole Track- Hinges for Litter-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in swing pole track hinges for litter carriers and the object of the invention is to devise a hinge which will allow of the litter carrier passing from the track in the building to the track portion carried by the pole without having to adjust the pole at each operation and yet which will yield under excessive wind pressure so as to prevent the breaking of the hinge and it consists essen tially of the following arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1, is a perspective .view of my hinge connection and a portion of the inner and outer track support.
Fig. 2, is an enlarged plan view of my hinge connection.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line of the center of the track.
In the drawings like characters of refer-, ence indicate corresponding parts in the various figures.
1 indicates a portion of a beam secured in the building in which my litter carrier operates. 2 is a portion of a doorway leading from the building and to which the beam 1 extends. 3' indicates an inner portion of the pole which is connected to the end of the beam 1 by a hinged connection 4. 5 is a U- bolt which straddles the beam 1 and 6 is a U-bolt which straddles the pole 3. The depending arms of the U-bolts 5 and 6 are connected together respectively by cross plates 7 and 8 which are secured to the U- bolts by the usual nuts 5 and 6 9 is the inner member of my hinge connection. The member 9 comprises a bar portion 9 provided at its outer end with a jaw 9'. Beneath the bar portion 9 and depending therefromare hanger portions 9 and 9 9 is a vertically set bar portion to which a track 10 extending into the building is secured by the bolts 11 and 11. The outer portion of the bar portion 9 is provided with a jaw 9* across which vertically extends a stud 9 formed integral with the member of the aw 9*.
The jaw 9 is provided at each side with stops 9 and 9 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 are links of my hinge connection which are the same in construction with the exception of the link 1 1 which difi'ers slightly as hereinafter noted,
and I will, therefore, only describe one of the links 12, 13, 14, 15, 1e and 17.
The links 12 to 17 comprise a jaw member 12 which is similar to the jaw member 9 of the link 9 and is also provided with stop projections 12 and 12 which projections flare outwardly at each'side of the jaw 12. In order to hingedly connect the jaws I have provided each jaw with a rearwardly extending tongue 13 which enters the jaw of'the next adjacent link, and is pivotally secured therein by a securing screw 114 and tongue 13 so formed as to allow of a limited swinging movement with in the jaw which movement is limited by the projections 12 and 12 Each of the links 12 to 17 is provided with depending hanger 115 formed integral with the upper jaw por tion 12. 15 is a jaw member formed integral with the lower end of the jaw hanger 15. The jaw 15 is formed similar to the jaw 9* hereinbefore described. The face of the jaw member 15 is provided with a longitudinal recess 15*. 15 is a hook member which extends fromeach portion 15, from the opposite side of the member 15 to the jaw, so as to form a half bearing into which a corresponding stud 9 of the next adjacent link fits. 18 is a plate which fits within the recess l5 and is secured therein by bolts 19. One end of the plate 18 is provided with a half bearing 20 which extends around. the other half of the stud 9 of each link. The jaw portion 15 and the jaw portion 9 carry the upper and lower track sections 21 and 22 which are formed integral with the aw portions 15 and 9 and with which each of the wheels of the litter carrier engage.
. The opposite end of the series of links 12 to 17 is connected to an end link 23 which is provided with a tongue 24 pivotally secured in the jaw 12 of the link 17! On the sponding to the track sections 21 and 22. The portion 27 is provided with a recess 28 corresponding to the recess 15 in which is secured a plate 29 similar in form to the plate 18, which co-acts with the hook portion 30=to form a bearing extending around the stud 9 of the link 17. From the opposite ends of the portion 27 extend a tongue 3i to which is secured a pole track 32 by bolts 33. It will be noted that in the link 14: the stop projections 12 and 12 are dispensed with so that at this point the hinge connec' tion may bend to any desired angle. 34 is a bar which rests uponthe plates 7 and '8 one end o'lt' the bar being connected by the bolt '35 to the outer end of the link23. The bar 34 in proximity to the depending U-bolt 5 is provided with a longitudinal slot 36. 37 is a bolt which connects the tongue 13 to the link section '14 of the jaw 12 of the link section 14.
The bolt 37 extends upwardly through the slot 36 and is supported therein by a nut 38; 39 is a cross bar which is secured by one securing screw 114, extending through the jaw 12 of the link 15. @LO is a similar bar which is similarly connected to the jaw portion 12 of the link 13. tl and 42 are V- shaped braces secured respectively to the bars 39 and 40 so as to overlap at their apex such overlapping portion being provided with 'alinedorifices through'which the bolt 37 extends. 43 and 4A are eye-bolts which extend respectively through one end of the bars 30 and {L0, the eyes of the bolts passing one through the other to form a link connection. 45 and 46 are similar eye bclts extending through the opposite end of the bars 39 and 450. The outer end of the rods 43,4 1, 45 and 46 are provided with nuts 47 betweenwhi'ch and the ends of the bars "39 and 40 extend compression springs 48.
When it is "desired to run the litter carrier from track 10 to the pole track 32 all that it is necessary to do is to swing the pole?) in either one direction or the other when the hinge connection formed by the links 12 to. 1? will bend to the required curve in order that the litter carrier may be carried to the required point for deposit. Such bending *movement is limited by stops 1 2" andf12 and the springs 48 which preveritthebtanding or the hinge connection except at the point where the 'bolt'37 connec'tsthe links 14 and 15 together. If excessive'strain is exerted upon the pole and the track carriedthereby, due to wind pressure or any other cause, the "springs 48 will give allowingabending otthe hinge around the bloltf37. The springs will carry the hinge back to normal when such pressure is released. H
When the pole track is operated in the ordinary way it is "neces'sary'to carry the pole back to a position in a line with the track in the building.
The litter carrier is then passed outwardly on to the pole track and the pole track re swung to the required angle. In returning the litter carrier to the pole track the track must be swung back in a line with the track in the building.
By the construction of my device this is obviated and the pole track may be swung to any desired angle either to the right or to the left and the litter carrier passed from the track of the building, over the hinge connection on to the pole track and returned without any adjustment of the track or when the operation is repeated.
hat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a swing pole track hinge for litter carriers, the combination with the stationary track and its support, of a swingable pole track and its support, and a series of hinge links each comprising vertically. disposed bar portions, a horizontally swingable tongue and jaw connection between the upper portions of the links and a horizontally swingable connection between the lower ends of the links, a track section carried by such lower horizontally swingable ends in alinement with the stationary track and swingable track.
2. In a swing pole track hinge for litter carriers, the combination with the station ary track and its support, of a swingable pole track and its support and a series of hinge links, each comprising vertically disposed bar portions, a horizontally swingable tongue and jaw connection between the upper portion of the links and the horizontally swingable connection betweonthe lower ends of the links, a track section carried by such lower horizontally 'swingable ends in alinem'ent with the stationary track and swingable track, and means for limiting the movement of the tongue within each 'corre-. sponding jaw.
3. Inaswing pole track hinge for litter carriers, the combination with the station-- ary track and its support, of a swingable pole track and its support, and a'seri'es of hinge links, each comprising vertically disposed bar portions, a horizontally swnlgable tongue and jaw connection'between the up per portion of the links and'the horizontally swingable connection between the lower ends of the links, a tracksection carriedby such lower horizontally swingable ends in alinement with the stationary track and swingable track, limiting projections extending outwardly from each side of the jaws'of the tongue and j-awisections,-adapted to limit the swinging movement of the jaws.
i. In a swing pole track hinge for litter carriers, the combination of thestationary track and its support, 'of -aswnigable .pole
track and its support, and a series of hinge links, each comprising vertically disposed bar portions, a horizontally swingable tongue and jaw connection, rigid means for limiting the movement of the tongue and jaw connection, resilient yielda-ble means for controlling the movement of the free tongue and j aw connection of the hinge sup port for such tongue and jaw connection, between the upper portions of the links and the horizontally swingable connection between the lower ends of the links, a track section carried by such lower horizontally swingable ends in alinement with the stationary track and swingable track.
5. In a swing pole track hinge for litter carriers, the combination with the stationary track and its support, of a swingable pole track and its support and a series of hinge links each comprising a vertically disposed bar portion, a horizontally swingable tongue and jaw connection, one of such tongue and jaw connections having free swinging movement, a bar carried by each link at each side of the free swinging connection, a support for the upper end of the pivot bolt of the free swingable connection, a bolt extending through each of the cross bars, a hinge connection between the inner ends of the bolts, and an abutment carried by the outer ends of the bolts, a compression spring extending around the bolt, between the said abutinents of the cross bars and a bracing connection extending from the cross bar and overlapping, having an orifice through which the pivot bolt of the hinge extends.
