Description

D. VAUGHAN.
OVERHEAD VALVE LIFTER.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 31. um.
Patented May 18, 1920.
FIGURE-4" D UNITED STATES PATENT oEEroE.
DAVID VAUGHAN, or YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
OVERHEAD-VALVE LIFTER.
Application filed. October 31, 1919.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID VAUGHAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overhead- Valve Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in engine tools, and particularly to a tool for removing overhead valves in combustion engines. Another object of the invention is to provide a tool for removing the key which holds the spring of a tappet valve of a gas engine.
A still further object is to provide a tool that may be used by the operator from either side of a gas engine.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top view of my tool. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved tool. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of my improved tool. Fig. A is a side elevation showing the cage block, rocker arm, rocker arm shaft and a method of applying tool in depressing a valve spring.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the valve cage, through which extends the valve stem 2. On the stem 2 is a coil spring 3; said spring is held on the stem 2 by means of a washer 4, which is held against the spring by means of a key 5. The principal object of this invention is to provide a tool whereby this spring 3 may be quickly and easily compressed so that the key 0 may be easily re moved.
The tool includes but one single part 6. This device is arranged with a handle 7 of convenient length. The other end of the tool is provided with an enlarged circular portion 8 through which there is an opening 9. By referring to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the lower portion of the opening 9 is larger in circumference than the upper portion, thereby forming an annular seat 10.
By referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Serial No. 334,750.
have provided circular openings 11 equally spaced from the opening 9, but passing through the tool at right angles to that of opening 9.
In operation the rocker arm 12 is removed from the rocker arm shaft 13 and the tool 6 is applied to the spring and rocker arm shaft in the following manner:
As the springs 4: are along one side of the rocker arm 12 and the valve rods let are on the other side, the operator will slip the tool 6 over the rocker arm shaft 13, using the outer opening 11 when the operator stands on the spring side of the rocker arm 12. If the operator is working from the other side of the engine he may slip the tool over the rocker arm shaft 13 by means of the inner openings 11, and in this case would lift up on the handle 7 to depress the spring 3 sufficiently to bring the end of the valve stem 23, carrying the key 5 above the opening 9 of my improved tool. When depressed in this manner it is an easy matter to remove the key 5. By referring to Fig. at, I have indicated the manner in which the spring is pressed when the operator is standing on the spring side of the rocker arm 12.
The same operation is proceeded with when the spring is replaced and the key is again inserted through the stem.
What I claim is:
In a device of the class described a tool provided with a handle portion, one end of said tool having an enlarged circular part, a circular opening. centrally located within said part, a larger opening extending part way through said enlarged part. an annular seat formed due to the increased diameter of part of the opening, openings at right angles to the opening above referred to spaced an equal distance from said opening, substantially as described for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature.
DAVID VAUGHAN.
IVitnesses J. W. MEDEAN, C. A. HARPMAN.
