To all whom it may concern .1 r r Be it known that. I, ELMER MoCLnLLAn AFRICA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city and county of Huntingdon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Guide-Line: Sheets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has to do with a guide line sheet, to be used in connection with writing paper which is superposed upon the guide line sheet, while the lines of the latter are visible through the superposed writing sheet, and afford guiding means for writing uniformly upon an unfilled-paper.-

Thepresent inventionis an improvement, in part, upon Patent No. 14,488, reissued June 25, 1918, which included guiding instrumentalities consisting of alternately arranged light and dark bands of suflicient width to permit writing upon a superposed sheet within the spaces immediately above the bands, and this improvement is designed to carryout this same general purpose in a more economical and practicable manner, while also making it easier to form lines of uniform height and size, thus possessing considerable advantage in-thestudy or practice of penmanship.

More specifically, this feature of my invention consists in forming the dark bands by means of a series of separate, spaced lines, which gives the desired efiect of a sufficiently dark area in contrast with the alternate light hands, and yet eliminates the solid dark field, such as forms a part of the structure of the patent above referred to.

.By the employment of individual, closely arranged lines, it is possible to effect a very considerable saving in the inlrused in printing the guide sheet, whilethe arrangement also prevents the paper from warping or wrinkling during the printing operation. A further advantage of the invention is that the separate lines of the dark bands serve mechanically to aid in writing, by giving a ready means of determining the height and size'of letters, thus mak-ingthe structureof more educational value, while also adding to its general appearance and commercial importance. Y

A further purpose of the invention isto afi'orda guide linesheet which can be used either with the usual flat sheet, or tablet paper, orwith-the folded, or note paper,

and to make this possible, I employ guiding means, which may be in'the form of bands, extending in both directions on the guide sheet, longitudinally and laterally, at-right angles to each other. This arrangement permits writing upon the superposed-sheet either lengthwise 0r crosswise of the latter.

An additional object contemplated bythe invention is to afford marginalindicating means prefer'ablyin the form of heavier, or darker lines,-than the remaininglines of the sheet, and extending parallel j to the edgesat such a distance as to indicate the desired width of margin. These marginal linesmay be disposed parallelto all the edges of the sheet, so that margin indications are provided at the-top, bottom and sides. Wheres. sheet of note paperis used, unfolded upon the guide sheet, it isdesirable to provide margin indicating means upon opposite sides of the center of the note sheet, orinfother word's at.;the adj acent edges of the opposed or folded portions, and this is attainedby providing additional marginal lines of heavier or darker formation, extending crosswise of-the. guide sheet, on opposite sides thereof and-parallel to its'center line. If it be imagined thatthe guide sheet is folded crosswise along the center line, corresponding to the folding of a superposed note sheet, it will'be seen'that inside margins are provided upon both foldedportions of the note sheet.

To these ends, the invention consistsin certain improvements and combinations of parts as will-be hereinafter more fully described, and pointedout in the claims at the end of the specification. I

The drawing is a View in elevation illustrating a preferred embodiment of the different features of my invention.

Referring to the drawing with greater particularity, it represents a sheet of cardboard or heavy paper of rectangular form, preferably of a length nearly double the width andwith a white background or base. Arranged upon thebackground are wide dark bands A in parallel relationship and each of suflicient width to permit the superposed sheet of writing paper to receive writing within the space immediately above the band. The bands" A are formed by means of series of separate lines a which are'independent of each other, but arranged in suflicie'ntly close'relationship to afford a dark area, as contrasted with the light bands B which are arranged alternately between the dark bands A, and are also of sui'licient width to permit letters to be written upon a superposed sheet within the space immediately above a light band.

The dark bands A are produced by ruling a series of fine lines, close to one another, and the elfect obtained is just as desirable, for purposes of contrast with the light bands, as. a solid dark area. WVith a solid dark area, the height of the letters must be obtained entirely from guesswork or approximation.

The guiding means above described permits writing in one direction, and in order to afford facility for writing in either direction with relation to the guide sheet, I employ additional guiding means extending at right angles to that previously referred to. Preferably the supplementary guiding means is in the form of dark'bands G and light bands D which are formed and arranged in the same manner as the bands A and B. WVhile this arrangement-has been found to be a desirable and efiicient one, it is not the only way in which the purpose of the invention may be carried out and I do not limit myself to this precise form, for it is possible to substitute other specific kinds of guiding means for the bands as are hereinbefore set forth.

It is extremely desirable with my im provement, as well as with any guide sheet, to indicate margins upon a superposed sheet in position for writing, and to this end i have provided marginal lines E extending parallel to the edges of the guide sheet in both directions, and spaced therefrom a distance corresponding to the width of margin,

The marginal lines E are made darker or heavier than the remaining lines upon the sheet, so that they stand out with suflicient prominence to clearly indicate the line of demarcation between the writing field and the marginal field, upon a superposed writing sheet. Where a. note sheet or folded sheet is used for writing purposes, it is desirable to place it upon the guide sheet in unfolded arrangement,-or perhaps to position only one portion of the folded sheet upon the guide sheet, with the other portion extending upon the reverse side of the guide sheet, merely as a matter of convenience, and to afford a proper margin entirely around the note sheet portion under such conditions. I utilize additional marginal lines F, also of darker or heavier character than said remaining lines on the sheet, and of substantially the same degree of heaviness as the marginal lines E already referred to. The marginal lines F extend crosswise of the guide sheet in parallel relationship to its. center line, and preferably at equal distances therefrom, depending upon the width of margin desired. Thus a marginal indication is afforded upon opposite. sides of the center of the guide line sheet, when writing lengthwise.

While I have described the invention with reference to a particular form, I desire it understood that the improvement is not necessarily confined to this precise disclosure, and may be variously modified or changed without departing from the essential purposes of the invention, or the scope of the following claims.

What I claim is g 1. A guide sheet for writing paper having a series of broad, darkbands thereon, each of which is composed of a series of separate lines, spaced slightly from each other, and a series of alternately arranged broad light bands, the dark bands being visible through a superposed sheet of paper when in position for use, and both the dark and light bands being of sulficient breadth to permit a superposed sheet to receive Writ-- ingwithin the spaces immediately above either the dark or light bands.

'2. A guide sheet according to claim 1, characterized by additional similarly formed dark'and light bands extending at right angles to the first mentioned bands, so as to accommodate paper for writing in either direction.

3. ;A guide sheet for writing paper having a series of spacedparallel guiding lines thereon, and additional spaced parallel guiding lines extending at right angles to the first-named guiding lines so as to accommodate paper positioned for writing either longitudinally or transversely, and characterized by marginal lines darker than the remaining lines and arranged in spaced parallel relationship to the edges of the sheet, so as to indicate margins on a superposed sheet of writing paper.

4. A guide sheet according to claim 3,

6. A guide sheet according to claim '5, characterized by additional marginal lines darker than said remaining lines and arranged crosswise on opposite sides of the center line of the sheet in spaced parallel relationship so as to indicate central margins on opposite sides of thecenter of 'a iso superposed unfolded sheet of double or note paper.

7. A guide sheet for writing paper having a series of broad, dark bands thereon, a series of alternately arranged broad light bands, and similar dark and light bands extending at right angles to the first mentioned bands, to accommodate paper for writing in either direction, the dark bands being Visible through a superposed sheet of paper when in position for use, and both said dark and light bands being of sufficient breadth to permit a superposed sheet to receive Writing Within the spaces immediately above either the dark or light bands, said dark bands being each formed of a series of parallel lines.

8. A guide sheet according to claim 1, characterized by marginal lines darker than the remaining lines and arranged in spaced parallel relationship to the edges of the sheet, so as to indicate margins on a superposed sheet of Writing paper.

9. A guide sheet for Writing paper having a series of spaced guiding lines thereon, each formed of a series of parallel lines, and

a marginal line darker than the guiding.
