CHARLES A. LINDBERG, OF ST URGIS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO STURGIS STEEL GO-CART 00., OF STURGIS, MICHIGAN, A. CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
RUNNING-GEAR FOR CI-IILDRENS CARRIAGES AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1920.
Application filed August 22, 1919. Serial No. 319,237.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. LIND- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sturgis, county of St. Joseph, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Running-Gears for Childrens Carriages and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a running gear for childrens carriages and the like.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved running gear the parts of which may be economically produced and assembled and at the same time provide a very rigid structure.
Second: to provide an improved running gear which is comparatively light and at the same time very strong.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a side elevation of a structure embodying the features of my invention, the wheels being omitted and the body being shown conventionally and partially broken away.
Fi Fig. I on a line corresponding to line 22 of Fig. I.
Fig. III is a detail rear elevation, one of the side members being shown in section.
Fig. IV is a detail plan view of the parts shown in Fig. III with the wheels omitted.
Fig. V is an enlarged detail. view partially in section on a line corresponding to line 55 of Figs. III, VI and VII.
F ig/VI is a detailtransverse view on a line corresponding to line 66 of Figs. I, IV and V.
Fig. VII is a detail transverse section on a line corresponding to line 77 of Figs. I, IV and V.
II is a plan View of parts shown in Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the body of the carriage, it being shown conventionally. I
My improved running gear frame comprises the rear axle 2, front axle 3 and side members 1. The side members are preferably formed of tubing. The axles illustrated are formed from sheets or bars the particular construction, however, forming no part of this invention. The rear axle 2 is secured to the side members by meansof coupling members 5, cruciform in general shape, disposed between the axle and the side members, with one of their arms parallel with the axle and the other arm parallel with the side members. The arms 6 of the coupling member are provided with coupling lugs 7 each of which is clampedupon the axle, the coupling members being stampings so that bendable integral arms are provided. The coupling members are further secured to the axle by means of centrally disposed rivets 8. The coupling mem bers are secured to the side members by means of clamping lugs 9 and 10 at the ends of the coupling member arms 11. The lugs 9 are clamped about the side members while the lugs 10 are extended above the side members to engage the springs 12.
These springs 12 are provided with clips 13 secured on their under sides, while the side members have recesses 14: therein, adapted to receive these clips. Bolts 15 are disposed through the clips and clamp the lugs 10 up in the springs as shown in Figs. V, VI and VII. The parts are thus rigidly secured together without the aid of braces or cross pieces and with few bolts and rivets. y
The rivet 8 prevents movement of the coupling member longitudinally of the axle, while the clips engaging the recesses of said members prevent movement of the coupling member longitudinally of the side members. Thus the single 'pair of stampings with the bolts and rivets described secure the axles and side members and rear springs.
The front ends of the side members are flattened and downwardly offset at 16 and conformed to engage the front axle, being secured thereto by the bolts or rivets 17. The front springs 18 are secured to the side members by means of the clips 19, having downwardly projecting ears 20 engaging the.
side members and upwardly projecting'ears 21 engaging the springs. The bolts 19 through the clips effectively secure the springs.
The springs 12 andl are connected by spring members 22 carrying a central cross piece 23. On the under side of the body are brackets 24 connected by the cross piece 25 which is pivoted to the cross piece 23 at 26 so that the body may be reversed. A latch 27 is mounted at 28 on the cross piece 29 connecting the spring members 22. The latch is provided with a keeper 30 adapted to engage the cross pieces 23 and 25 when they are brought into alinement. The latch 27 extends rearwardly under the rear cross piece 29 which carries a supporting loop 31 therefor.
The handle 88 is secured to the side pieces a by means of the clips 34 embracing both the handle and the side pieces and secured thereon by the clamping bolts This permits the handle being removed for packing, thereby very materially reducing the size of the package, the cost of packing and transportation.
The structure is such that the retailer or user can readily assemble the same. The wheels are preferably detachably secured by means described in the application for Letters Patent filed concurrently herewith.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in a form in which I have embodied them in practice. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications or adaptations which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a running gear, the combination of side members, a rear axle disposed below said side members, springs disposed above said side members having clips on their under sides, said side members having indentations to receive said clips, cruciform coupling members disposed between the axle and side members with their transverse arms parallel with the axle and provided with clamping lugs engaging the axle and their longitudinal arms parallel with said side members and provided with clamping lugs at their ends embracing the same, forward side member clamping lugs betudinal arms parallel with said side members and provided with clamping lugs at their ends embracing the same, forward side member clamping lugs being extended above the side members to engage said springs, and clamping bolts arranged through said clamping lugs.
3. In a running gear, the combination of e a side member, an axle, a spring having a clip thereon, said side member having a re cess adapted to receive said clip, a cruciform coupling member dlsposed between the" axle and side member, one arm of said cou pling having clamping lugs at its ends engaging the axle, the other arm being provided with clamping lugs at its ends engaging the side member, one pair of which lugs are extended to engage said spring, and a clamping bolt arranged through such clampmg lugs to engage sa1d spring clip,
said coupling member being further secured to said axle by a rivet disposed centrally through the coupling member.
l. In a running gear, the combination of a side member, an axle, a spring, a coupling member disposed between said axle and side member and provided with lugs engaging both coupling member and side members, said coupling member being a stamping and said lugs bendable and clamped upon the parts, one pair of said lugs being extended to engage said spring, and a clamping bolt for such pair of lugs.
5. In a running gear, the combination of a side member, an axle, and a coupling member disposed between said axle and side member and provided with integral lugs engaging both coupling member and side member, said coupling member being a stamping and said lugs bendable and clamped upon the parts.
6. In a running gear, the combination of a pair of side members, a rear axle disposed below said side members, cruciform coupling members disposed between said axle and side members with their transverse arms parallel to the axle and provided with clamping lugs at their ends engaging the axle and with their longitudinal arms parallel With said side members and pro- In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set vided with clamping lugs at their ends emmy hand and seal in the presence of two bracing the same, said coupling members vvltnesses.
