BAND WHEEL CONSTRUCTION. APPLICATION FILED AUG-8. 1919.
Patented May 11,1920.
HAROLD JAMES LOCKHABT, 0F PARKERSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA.
BAND-WHEEL oonsrnuo'rroir.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1920.
Application filed August 8, 1919. Serial No. 316,097.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD J. LOOKHART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkersburg, in the county of Wood and State of West Virginia, have invented oer tain new and useful Improvements in Band Wheel Construction, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in band wheel construction, although not necessarily limited thereto.
An important object of the invention is to provide in a wheel construction means whereby the keys with which the wheel is secured against rotation upon a shaft may be readily withdrawn.
It has been my experience that most of the key removers now upon the market are impractical in that they tend to destroy the key when removing the same. As is well known metal bound upon metal is most easily started by a sharp blow. To apply the blow from the outside would merely have the tendency to more firmly seat the key. I have accordingly devised a wheel having means whereby the keys may be reached to apply power thereto from the inner end.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent throughout the course of the following discussion:
In the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, and throughout like reference characters denote like parts.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hub of my improved wheel, and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a band wheel embodying my invention.
Referring now more particularly tothe drawings the numeral 10 designates a shaft upon which is mounted the band wheel 11. This band wheel is in the present instance shown as comprising a laminated structure formed of layers 12 of any suitable material.
Secured to the sides of the band wheel are hub flanges 13 held in position upon the wheel by means of bolts 14 or the like. The hub flanges 13 are provided with key ways 15 adapted to co-act with a key way 16 formed in the shaft 10 to receive keys 17 and 18. While both flanges having been illustrated as being provided with key ways it is of course to be understood that if desired but one of the flanges need be provided therewith.
Formed in the hub flanges 13 are openings 19 and 20, approximately alined with the key ways 15. Intermediate the openings 19 and 20, the wheel 11 is provided with a recess 21.
As is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, the recess 21 communicating with the openings 19 and 20 allows insertion of a draft 22 or the like for contact with the inner end of the key, the opening 19 allowing access to the inner end of the key 18 and the opening 20 allowing access to the inner end of the key 17. If but a single key way is provided it is of course to be understood that the opening in the flange will be formed in the flange opposite to that in which the key way is formed.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and the various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted too, without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a device of the character described, a pair of spaced flanges, a wheel arranged intermediate said flanges and secured thereto, said flanges and wheel having openings formed therein adapted to receive a shaft, alined keyways formed in said flanges con- .nected with the shaft receiving openings thereof, each of the said flanges being pro-- vided with an opening alined with and directed toward the inner end of the keyway of the other of said flanges, said wheel being provided with an opening connecting the inner end of the keyway of each of said flanges with the inner end of the other of said flanges, whereby a tool may be inserted through the opening of one of said flanges to engage the inner end of a key seated in the keyway of the other of said flanges.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
. HAROLD JAMES LOCKHART.
