TELEPHONE SET.
. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 28, 1918- citizen of the United States, residin UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
HENRY C. EGERTON, OF PASSAIC, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 WESTERN ELECTRIC COMPANY, INCORPORATED, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
TELEPHONE SET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. EGERTON, a at Iassaic, in the county of Passaic and tate of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Telephone Sets, of which the ollowing is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
The invention relates to a telephone set and more particularly to a set of the loudspeaking or announcing type.
The set of the invention is particularly designed for use on naval vessels for transmitting orders, and especially for submarine vessels where the amount of spaceavailable to accommodate the telephone set is a minimum.
In accordance with a feature of the invention a set is provided in which a long amplifying path is provided from the receiver in the form of a spirally formed horn which occupies a minimum amount of space.
In order to meet a condition imposed upon the set by the continuous vibration to which it is subjected in service, in accordance with another feature of the invention, aface or mounting plate is provided with which the receiver horn and the transmitter mouthpiece are integral. The horn and transmitter mouthpiece form the sole supports for the receiver and transmitter.
In the drawing, Figure l is a rear elevation of the set removed from the casing; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the casing substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section substantially on the line'3-3 of Fig. 1.
The entire set, including transmitter and receiver, is inclosed in a casing which may be of metal or other suitable material which, in the embodiment of the invention disclosed, takes the former a rectangular box indicated at 1. This box or casing may either be built into a partition or suitably secured thereto. Formin a cover for the casing is a cover plate in icated as a whole at 2, which late is adapted to form a complete cover or the casing and to be attached thereto in any suitable manner.- Integral with the cover 2 and preferably cast integral therewith is 'a splral receiver horn 3 and a transmitter mouthpiece 4. Supported solely by the mouthpiece 4 is a transmitter body of the horn by an inte ral Web The transmitter and receiver are associated with a suitable line circuit b means of conductors entering the casing t rough the tube 16. The conductors are also led through this tube to the terminals of a push button switch 12 which, when depressed, serves to connect the transmitter in operative relation with a source of potential.
The set is particularly adapted to be used in naval vessels and more particularly in submarine vessels, and conse uently in order that the orders transmitte set may be audible above the noise incidental to the operation of the machinery of the submarine vessel, an am lifying horn is essential for the receiver. t is also essential that the set as a whole should occupy a minimum amount of space as space is at a premium in vessels of this character. The spiral horn of the invention as illustrated and described above rovides a horn having a relatively long amp ifying path and is one which occupies a minimum amount of space. It will be readily apparent that the am 1i f ing path of this spiral horn is consi erahly greater than the maximum diagonal dimension of theentire casing. The receiver horn and transmitter mouthpiece being formed integral with the mou'ntmg plate and being mounted with the transmitter and receiver respectively, a construction is provided in which there is a minimum number of joints and conse uently one which is afi'ected only iua sma 1 do ee b the vibration to which the set is or inar' y subjected in service. The whole construct on is rigid and compact.
What is claimed is:
1. A telephone set comprising a receptacle, a cover for'said' receptacle, a soundthrough such conducting horn, of substantially the form 10 stricted end.
3. 'A.telephone set comprising a receptacle, a cover, a coiled sound-conducting horn secured to said cover and substantially filling said receptacle, and a telephone instrument associated with said horn within the receptacle. t
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 25th day of January, A. D. 1918.
HENRY C. EGERTON.
