UNITED STATES PATENT orinon HENRY M. LUCAS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
POWER-IPRESS.
Application filed February 6, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY M. LUCAS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Chic, have inaented certain new and useful Improvements in Power-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to power presses generally, but is more particularly applicaole to those used for such purposes as forcing arbors into wheels, and in operations where tightly fitting parts are to be assem-' bled, and the particular feature of my invention is that it is a lever-operated power press, with quick power motions, with automatic trip or stop in the upward direction or direction of movement of the ram to position preceding its working stroke.
The objects of my invention are (1) to provide a power press having means by which to operate the quick power motion in either direction, that is, to move the pressing member or ram upwardly, or to position ready for its working stroke, or to move it downwardly, that i to its work, and having other means which, when moved in one direction, controls the slow pressing downward movement of the pressing member or ram, or movement thereof toward its work, and which same means, when moved in the opposite direction, operates the quick upward movement of the pressing member or ram, or movement thereof to position preparatory to its working stroke; (2) to provide a power press in which, when the quick upward movement of the pressing member or ram, or quick movement thereof to position preceding its working stroke, is operated by either of the efore mentioned means, the pressing member or ram will continue to move upwardly, or to position for starting its working stroke, until it is stopped by the first of the before mentioned means or is stopped. by an automatic trip or stop; and (3) to provide a power press in which the slow downward pressing motion of the pressing member or ram, or motion to its work, controlled by the second of the before-mentioned means, only operates while said second means is operated and stops when said second means is released.
I attain these objects, and others of a similar nature, to which my invention may be applied, by the power press illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which-- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1920.

Similar letters and similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A, Fig. 1, refers to a base, preferably made of cast iron, and suitable to receive and support the work.
Uprights B13, afford support for the housing C, of my power press and guiding means for the cross-head D, of the ram E.
The ram E, is guided by the cross-head D, operating in suitable channels or ways in the uprights B B, and is a bar of suitable metal, substantially cylindrical, and is provided with rack teeth 10, on one side, but I do not restrict myself to a ram of any particular shape.
My power press comprises in its principal parts a driving wheel 11, driven by a motor, 12, or other suitable means for supplying power, a driving shaft 13, a quick power motion mechanism, 14, a downward pressing power motion mechanism 15, a rocker-shaft 16, operating levers 17 and 18, and the pressing member or ram E.
The quick power motion mechanism of my invention comprises the driving-shaft 13, which is provided with suitable support and bearings, and has on the end opposite to the driving wheel 11, Fig. 5, a bevel-gear pinion 19, which turns with the shaft 13, and engages an inner bevel-gear wheel 20, turning loosely on a shaft 21, which shaft is supported in suitable bearings and extends at a right angle to the line of the shaft 13. v
The inner bevel-gear wheel 20, has an inwardly inclined face, 22, intended to engage the clutch or looking member hereinafter described. An oppositely disposed or outer bevel-gear wheel 23, similar to the inner bevel-gear wheel 20, and having a similarinwardly inclined face 2 1, is arranged to turn loosely on the shaft 21, and also to engage the bevel-gear pinion 19, before-mentioned, the inner and outer bevel- gear wheels 20 and 23, being held apart by a separating sleeve 25. A slidable clutch or looking member 26, is arranged on the separating sleeve 25, between the inner and outer bevel- gear wheels 20 and 23, which clutch or looking member is operated in its sliding movement by a pin 27, which engages a pin-hole 28, cut longitudinally in the shaft 21. The operating pin 27, is connected with the clutch or locking member 26, by a transverse pin 29, shown in outline in Fig. 5, passing through the clutch or looking member 26, and through the separating sleeve 25, and the operating pin 27, and sliding in slots 25, out longitudinally through the sleeve 25, and the shaft 21, the clutch or looking member 26, being rotatable with the separating sleeve 25, on the shaft 21. The operating pin 27, has at its outer end a collar 30, with suit able bearings, which collar is intended to be attached to the motion changing device for the quick power motion mechanism, hereinafter more fully described, the collar 30, being held in place by a nut 31. The shaft 21, has at itsinner end a gear-pinion 32, which engages an internal gear-wheel 33. The internal. gear-wheel 33, is fixed on a shaft 34, Fig. 1, having suitable support and bearings, arranged parallel to the shaft 21, the internal gear-wheel 33 and shaft 34, being rotatable in either direction.
The slow power pressing motion mechanism of my invention comprises a worm 35, Fig. 4, fixed on the driving shaft 13, which worm engages or meshes with a worm-wheel 36, mounted loosely on a shaft having suitable support and bearings, arranged parallel to the shaft 21. The worm-wheel 36, has secured thereto on its outer side a disk-housing 38, having friction-disks 39, located in recesses 40, and also having retracting springs 41, located in recesses 42, in the disk-housing 38, an inner clutch-member 43, being slidable, and engageable with the friction-disks 39, and with the retracting springs 41, the retracting springs being intended to return the inner clutch-member toits outward position.
The inner clutch-member 43, is revoluble with the shaft 37, and has an inwardly extending contact ring or finger section 44, to engage the friction disks 39, in the diskrecesses 40, and has on its outer edge an outward extension or flange 45, and has a central hub collar 46, through which the shaft 37, passes, and which extends outwardly farther than the extension or flange 45, and is engageable with the interior face 47 of the neck section 48, of a slidable jawsleeve 49, arranged on the shaft 37. Pivotally secured at their lower inner ends to the neck section or flange end 48, of the jaw-sleeve 49 are outwardly extending jaws 50, so arranged that the inner upper edges 52, thereof are engageable with the outward extension or flange 45, of the inner clutch member 43. The outer ends of the jaws 50, are provided with engaging ends 51, having faces which are engageable with a slidable outer clutch member 53. This outer clutch-member 53, is arranged on the jaw-sleeve 49, and is rev oluble thereon and consists of an inclined or truncated cone-shaped nose portion 54, which is engageable between the jaws 50, of the jaw-sleeve 49. On the sleeve portion 55, of the outer-clutch member 53, is mounted loosely a collar 55', held in place by a nut 56, a revoluble nut 57, being provided at the end of the aw-sleeve 49, on the shaft 37, as a stop to confine the outward move ment of the outer clutch-member 53. The shaft 3'7, has at its inner end a gear pinion 58, which engages or meshes with the internal gear-wheel 33, Fig. 5, and the shaft 34, of the internal gear-wheel 33, is provided with a gear-pinion 59, Fig. 2, with which the teeth 10, of the ram E, engage.
' The means for ope ating my power press comprises the rocker-shaft 16, the handoperated lever 17, the hand operated forked lever 18, the lever-bar 60, the connecting link 61., the sliding-rod 62, Figs. 1 and 2, and the quick power motion movement changing device, 63.
Therocker-shaft 16, is attached to the front of my power press by a suitable bracket 67, or other suitable means which will permit the rocker shaft 16, to rotate or rock in its attachments and is attached at its other end to the housing of the quick power motion mechanism. The hand lever 17, is fixedly secured to the rocker-shaft 16, at one end of the rocker-shaft and at such an angle to the perpendicular that by pressing downward on the lever 17, the rockershaft 16, will be turned or rocked front side down, and by pulling up on the lever 17,
the rockershaft 16, will be correspondingly turned or rocked front side up. The lever 18, consists of the handle 64, connected to parallel extending arms or forks 65, and at their upper ends pivotally connected to a head-piece 66, attached by suitable brackets or other suitable means to the front of my power press, and, at points substantially in the line with the horizontal diameter 'of the snaft 37 of the slow pressing power motion mechanism 15, of my invention, to a collar 55, on the sleeve portion 55, of the outer clutch member 53, the attachment being by pins 68, on the arms 65, working in transverse slots 69, in the collar 55, the intention being that there shall be no deviation-of the collar 55, nor of the outer clutch member 53, from the line of the shaft 37 through pulling. outward or pressing inward the handle 64, and to 1nsure true movement of the outer clutch member 53, in its engagement with jaws 50, of the jaw-sleeve 49. The collar 55', has on its inner edge ballbearings 70, against which the shoulder of the cone section of the outer clutch member 53, bears, the collar 55' being held on the sleeve portion 55, of the outer clutch-memher by the nut 56. The lever-bar 60, is attached at its upper end to the rocker shaft 16, in such manner that inward movement of the lever bar 60, will rock or move the rocker-shaft front side down and that outward movement of the lever bar 60, will rock or move the rocker-shaft front side up. The lever-bar 60, is connected at its lower end to the lower end of a link 61, by a pin 68, working in a slot 69, and the link 61, is pivotally attached to the arms 65, of the lever 18,.at the lower ends of the arms, 65.
The quick power motion movement changing device 63, comprises a rocking-post or upright 71, Figs. 1, 6 and 7, fixedly attached to the rocker-shaft 16, adjacent to the quick power motion mechanism 14, at the lower end of the post or upright, the post or upright rocking or moving with the rockershaft 16, and having an opening 72, therethrough near its lower end in which opening 7 2, the collar 30, on the sliding pin 27, Fi r. 5, hereinbefore described, engages. The co llar 30, is attached to the rocking post or upright 71, by pins 7 3, the opening through the collar 30, being sufficiently large to make up for the exceedingly slight play around the sliding pin 27, the intention being that there shall be no deviation of the sliding pin 27 from the line of the shaft 21, due to rocking or radial movement of the rockingpost or upright 71, and to insure true movement of the sliding pin 27, in its revolution in the shaft 21. The rocking-post or upright 71, has at its upper end a longitudinal hole for a spring operated pin 74, which engages a recess 7 5, in an outwardly extending bar 76, attached to my power press by suitable means in a position above the upper end of the rocking postor upright 71, to act as a detent means for the rocking-post or upright 71.
The means for automatically tripping or stopping the quick power motion mechanism of my power press comprises a vertical rod or bar 62, attached at its lower end to the cross-head D, of the ram E, and passing through a guide member 77, on the easing or housing of my power press. The rod or bar 62, is provided with a contact collar 78, arranged to be brought into contact with or to engage a nose-member 79, Fig. 6, on the inner side of the rocker-shaft 16, and arranged thereon to rock or move the rockershaft outwardly and thereby disengage the pin 74, of the rocking-post or upright 71, from the recess 75, in overlying bar 76, to draw outwardly the sliding-pin 27 and thereby to reverse the quick motion power mechanism 14, and cause the ram E, to move downward, and preventing the rack-teeth 10, of the ram from being disengaged from the gear-pinion 59, on the shaft 34, due to excessive upward movement of the ram.
The operation of the quick motion mechanism of my power press is as follows:
Power communicated to the drive-wheel 11, causes the shaft 13, to revolve and with it the bevel-gear pinion 19. Outward pull on the lever 17 engages the pin 74, in the recess 75, in the bar 76, reference being had to Figs. 1, 2, 8, 5, 6 and 7, thereby pushing inwardly the sliding-pin 27, and engaging the clutch-member 26, with the inner bevel-- gear wheel 20, and causing the shaft 21, to revolve, the effect of the inclined face of the pin 74, being to hold the clutch in engagement due to the pressure of the spring which actuates the pin 74. The shaft, through engagement of the gear pinion 32, thereon, turns the internal-gear wheel 33, and the shaft in the direction shown by the arrow a, Fig. l, and by means of the gear pinion 59, on the shaft 34, engaging the rack-teeth 10, of the ram E, causes the ram to move upwardly. Downward push on the lever 17, disengages the post 7l,'from the slot in the bar 76, and pulls the sliding pin 27, outwardly, thereby engaging the clutch-member 26, with the outer bevel-gear wheel 23, which owing to its engagement with the bevel gear pinion 19, turns the shaft 21, in a reverse direction and, through the gear pinion 32, causes the internal gear wheel 33, and the shaft 34, to turn in the direction of the arrow b, and by means of the gearpinion 59, engaging the teeth 10, of the ram E, causes the ram 1), to move downwardly.
To operate the slow power pressing motion mechanism of my invention, the handle 64, of the lever 18, is pressed inwardly thereby causing the outer clutch-member 53, to engage the jaws 50 of the jaw-sleeve 49, the inner ends of the jaws, by spreading or expanding of the jaws, being brought into engagement with the outwardly extending flange 45, of the inner clutch-member 43, and forcing the inner clutch-member inwardly, the inwardly extending or contactin section 44, thereof engaging the frictiondisks 39, and causing the worm-wheel 36, to turn the shaft 87, and, by means of the gearpinion 58, thereon which engages the internal gear wheel 33, to communicate the slow pressing power motion to thegear-wheel 33, and thence by the shaft 34, and the gear pinion 59, thereon, which engages the rackteeth 10, of the ram, to communicate the slow downward pressing power motion to the ram E. It is thus seen that the slow power pressing motion mechanism of my power press is only operated during the time the. ram E, is moving downward, or to its work.
Outward pull of the handle 64:, of the lever 18, by-means of the link 61, draws outwardly the lever-bar 60, thereby rocking or turning front side up the rocker-shaft 16, which engages the rocking-post 71,.with the slot 7 5 in the outwardly extending bar 76, thus forcing in the sliding pin 27, and so operating the quick motion mechanism to move the ram E, upwardly.
Excessive upward movement of the ram E, is prevented by the rod 62, which, when the ram E, has reached a predetermined upward position, engages, by means of the collar 78, the nose-member or projection 79, on the rocker-shaft l6, rocking or turning the rocker-shaft front side down, thereby disengaging the rocking-post 71, from the slot in the outwardly extending bar 76, and by drawing the sliding-pin 27, outwardly, causing the quick motion mechanism to move the ram E, downwardly.
The weight of the ram E, and the details appended thereto, may be counter balanced in accordance with a well-known practice by means of a counter-weight connected thereto, usually by a chain, as 80, carried by rollers 81, arranged in a well known man-' ner, (not herein fully shown), such weight being preferably contained in a protecting casing or tube, as F, Fig. 1, in accordance with a common method applicable to this class of machinery in general.
Having thus described my invention, it should be understood that I do not confine myself to all the details of construction, as there may be modifications thereof and variations therein without departing from the spirit of my invention or exceeding the scope of the claims.
