Description

G. B.. PomnExTEn. commu/mou Lock. APPLlc'moN man ocr. a0, 1919.
GEORGE B. POINDEXTER, OF BREMERION, WASHINGTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
COIVLBIMATION-LOOK.l
Patented May 11g-1920.
Application filed October 30, 19,19. Serial 170.334,624.v Y
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I; DEXTER; a citizen oi' the United States, residing at Bremerton7 in the county of Kit sap and State of lVasliington; have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combination-Locks, oi' which the following is a specication. y
My invention relates to improvements 1n combination locks and the object of my invention is to provide a combination lock that is simple in its plan of construction and that cannot be tampered with or unlocked by any person not knowing the combination thereof.
Another object of my invention is to provide a combination lock that embodies a maximum of compactness while still retaining all the effectiveness of locks of the combination type.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear asl the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, adaptation; combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described Vand claimed.
I accomplish these objects by devices illustrated in theaccompanying drawings, wherein Figure -1 is a view in side elevation of a combination lock embodying my invention; Fig. 2 isa view in vertical crosssection taken perpendicular to 1; illusv trating the mechanism of the lock in a locked position; Fig?) is a view in vertical cross-section illustrating the mechanism of the lock in an unlocked position; Fig. 4 .is a top plan view of the lock in an unlocked position; Fig. 5 is a view in horizontal sec-- tion taken online 5, 5 of Fig. 2; showing the mechanism in a locked position; Fig. -6 is a view in horizontal section taken on line 6, 6 of Fig. 3, showing the mechanism in an unlocked position; Fig. 7 is a similar view taken on line 7 7 of Fig. 3; and Fig` 8 is a view of the various elements which con prise the combination mechanism of my combination lock.v y Y Referring to the drawings, throughout GEORGE B. PoIN- which like reference numerals indicate like parts, the numeral 1 vdesignates a cylindrical casing which is preferably made in-two sections to facilitate the assembling of the elements comprising my device and also for making the various adjustments.
The upper section 2 andthe lower section 3 of the casing 1 are-connected as by screw threads 1. vTo Xedly secure my device-to a wall or ybase -5 I have formed on the upper end of the section 2 an annular flange 6 said flange 6 being adapted to seat on the outer face ot a washer 7 disposed around the section 2 while the inner face of said washer 7 bears on the outer face of the wall 5.
The section 2 is externally threaded as at 8; to engage a clamping nut 9, said nut 9 not bearing on the inner face of thev wall 5 to thereby secure the device to the aforesaid wall. v
Seated in a recess v10 formed in the .upper w portionof section 2 is a acket 11 said acket 11 having an annular flange 12 formed onf its upper end, which flange 12 is adapted to seat on the lange 6 of the section 2 both of the said flanges being preferably made of the same diameter.
Superposed on the flange 12 is anannular disk 13 the latter having on its dowels 14 adaptedto seat in holes or. apertures 15 in the flange 12 of thejacket 11 and similar holes orapertures 16 in the flange 6 ofthe section 2 to thereby prevent any circumfer ential movement of these elements'with respect to each other. f
l`duperposhed on disk 13 is a dial plate 17 having'V an annular vflange 18 the latter is adapted to seat in a recess 19 of a ring 20, the ring 20 is formed. with a downwardly extending lannular yflange I21 which` is adapted to inclose and retain `thevarious elements in their proper; position.
Threaded pins 22 in the flange 21serve to .ixedly secure the ring 20 to the flanges on the jacket and the upper section 2.
Disposed within the upper section 2 adjacent to the lower end thereof is an internal partition 23 which forms a chamber 24 in the section 2 and a similar chamber 25 in the lower section 3.
The partition 23 is provided with a central slot 23EL to permit a passage of the mechanism therethrough, from the' lower chamber 25 to the upper chamber 24 and disposed within the chamber 24 and adapted for axial movement therein is a disk 26 having on its lower face a boss 27 and on its upper face a pin or lug 28. The disk 26 is fixedly secured to the lower end of a sleeve 29 as by a screw 30 in the boss 27.
The sleeve 29 is preferably formed on its periphery with flattened portions or faces 31 and on its upper end with a shoulder 31a said shoulder having on its outer face thereof slots 32 and similar slots 33 disposed at right angles to slots 32. Y
The stem 34 is mounted within the sleeve 29 and adapted for independent axial and rotary movement therein with respect to the sleeve 29 and on its upper end which protrudes from the said sleeve is formed with a flattened portion or wings 35, the lower edge of said wings being adapted to engage or `seat in the slots 32 and 33.
The stem 34 also protrudes from the lower end of the sleeve 29 and is formed on itsl lower end with a squared portion 36 having a cross-member 37 mounted thereon, said member bearing against a shoulder 34a formed by the stem 34 and the portion 36.
A helical spring 38 disposed around the stem 34 having its upper end bearing against the lower end of the sleeve 29 and its lower end bearing against a washer 39 on the stem 34 said washer being superposed on the cross-member 37. The spring 38 serves to retain the wings 35 of the stem 34 in .the selected slots 32 or 33 on the shoulder 31L of the' 'sleeve 29 as will be readily undersecured to a rod 46'as`by nuts 47 engaging the threaded end of said rod. This rod may be'attached or connected to any device, not
Y shown, which it is desired to be kept locked.
The lower lug 45 of the yoke 42 .when my device 1s 1n a locked position, kas shown in Figf'2, Vis adapted to seat in a conical rebeing disposed in the bottom wall of the Y cess 48 'provided in a thimble 49 the latter Y lower section 3 of the Vcasingl.
V:To prevent axial movement ofthe thimble 49 the latter is fixedly secured inthe wall 59 as by a shoulder 51 on the thimble 49 bearing on the inner face of the said wall and by a screw 52 threaded in the boss 53 on the outer face of the said wall, said screw being adapted to bear against the thimble 49 as shown in Fig. 2.
To prevent tampering with the rod 46 I have provided a tube or conduit 54 through which the rod passes, the upper end of said tube being connected to the thimble 49 as by threads 55 and on its other end to the device to be kept locked.
Superposed within the jacket 11 are the various elements of the combination mechanism of my device, comprising an actuating disk 56. a distance ring 57, an annular disk 58, a distance ring 59, and an annular disk 60.
The actuating disk 56 is formed with a boss 61 on the lower face thereof, said boss 61 being adapted to seat in a circular hole 62 in the bottom wall 63 of the jacket 11.
An axial and substantially rectangular hole 64 is provided in the disk 56 saidv hole 64 conforming to the shape of the periphery of the sleeve 29 to thereby permit a positive connection between the disk and the sleeve for simultaneous rotary movement of these elements permitting independent axial movement of the sleeve in the disk.
An upwardly projecting pin 65 is ixedly mounted on the upper face of the actuating disk 56 said pin'being adapted to engage a similarly mounted pin 66 onv the lower face of the annular disk 58 during the unlocking operation of the Combination mechanism.
The annular disk 58 is formed with an axial circular hole 67 sufficiently large to clear the circular portion of the sleeve 29, as shown in the drawings. A
Fixedly mounted on the upper face of the disk 58 is an upwardly projecting pin 68 adapted to engage a similarly mounted pin 69 on the lower face of the disk GOduring the aforesaid unlocking operation.
The annularV dis`k69 is also formed with a similar axial circular hole 79 as provided in the disk 58. Y
The annular disk 13 is also'formedwith an axial circular hole 71 ,as in the disks 58 and 60. f
TheV dial plate 17 is formed with an axial and substantially rectangular hole V7 2 the latter conforming to the vshape of the periphery of the sleeve 29 to thereby form a positive connection between Vthe sleeve andV iso register with a fixed Zero mark 74 on the stationary ring 20.
Each of the disks 13, 56, 58 and 60 also the bottom wall 63 of the jacket 11 is provided with a hole each hole in the various elements being in alinement and adapted to receive the pin or lug 28 on the disk 26 when the mechanism is in an unlocked position, as shown in Fig. 3.
It will vbe readily seen from the foregoing that it is impossible to withdraw the sleeve 29 as the pin 28 on the disk 26 bears against the under face of the bottom wall 63 of the jacket Il thereby preventing suchA withdrawal.
In the event that an unauthorized person tampering with the lock is successful in loeating the hole 75 in the wall 63 the pin 28 would strike the disk 56 thereby preventing` further withdrawal. Further attempts by said person to aline the holes 75 in the various elements would be futile unless the combination is known.
However. if the combination is known the numbers'of said combination on the plate are brought into proper registration with the fixed Zero mark on the ring 20 by manipulating the stem 34 and the sleeve 29 thereby rotating the disk 26. also the actu ating disk 56 which in turn picks up disk 58 through the medium of the pins 65 and 66 which in its turn picks up the disk 60 through the medium of the pins 68 and 69, thus alining the holes 75 in the various elements and bringing the pin 28 in registration with the same. The sleeve 29 and the stem 34 may now be withdrawn, and in withdrawing the sleeve 29 and stem 34, the pin 28 will pass through all of the disk elements thereby preventing independent rotary movement of the said disk elements.
In the withdrawing of the stem 34 the cross-member' 37 passes from the lower chamber 25 through the slot 23a in the partition 23 to the upper chamber 24; the stem 34 is still further withdrawn to release the wings from the slots 32 on the sleeve 29 and is given a quarter of a turn to seat the wings 35 in the slots 33; this movement turns the cross-member 37 at right angles of the slot 23, as shown in Figs. 3 and 7 thus preventing any inward movement of the sleeve or stem while the mechanism is in this position.
To lock the mechanism the stem 34 is withdrawn thus releasing the wings 35 from the slots 33; the stem 34 is given a quarter of a turn to permit the wings 35 to seat in the slots 32. This movement brings the cross-member 37 in registration with the slot 23n thus permitting the sleeve 29 and the stem 34 to movel inwardly. The stem 34 may be given a few turns to throw the holes 7 5 out of alinement.
The axial movement of the sleeve 29 and the stem 34 is transmitted through the yoke 42 to the rod 46 to lock or unlock the device to which it is attached.
Manifestly, changes may be made in the forms, dimensions and arrangement of parts of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
