, Be it known that I, AUGI'E L. HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, and a rsident of Evanston, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Lubricating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My inven'tion'relates to lubricating devices and `particularly tov oil cups of the splash feed type. i
Among the important objects of my 1nvention are: to provide improved construction and arrangement for'readily permitting an oil bearing cup part to be applied to or removed from a nipple member which is permanently secured to conduct oil to the sur# faces to be lubricated; to provide improved and more efcient means for detachably se curing the cup and nipple members together; to provide improved arrangement for permitting the removed inverted cup member to be readily filled with oil, and improved means for preventing escape of the oil when the cup is returned to upright position; to provide improved construction and arrangement whereby when the cup is applied to the nipple member, pressure will be introduced into the cup'and a charge of oil forced therefrom to be delivered to the bearing surfaces, thus insuring immediate lubrication service to the bearings after they have been cleaned or first put into use; to provide improved and more efficient means for feeding and conducting Oil into the discharge passageway ofthe cup; to provide improved arrangement which permits adjustment to be readily made for speed of oil flow from the cup; and in general, toV

The nipple member of the device comprises the threaded plug section 5,'the polygonal wrenchyreceiving head 6 and the spindle 7 extendingupwar'dly from the head. The axial passageway 8 extends upwardly through the plug and head sections and a distance upwardly through the spindle `7, lateral passageways 9 through the spindle communicating with the vertical passageway 8. The section a above the lateral passageways 9 is of slightly less diameter than that of the base section?) of the spindle. The upper end c of the 'spindle is externally threaded and below this threaded end the diameter is reduced to form the frusto conical section Z between vthe threaded end and the section a'. In the top of the head 6 is the annular groove 10l in 'which a washer 11 of suitable material Vsuch as fiber is seated.
The cup is constructed of sheet metal and comprises the cylindrical body' part 12, the dome shaped top 13 integral therewith, and the bottom 111. This bottom has the outer flange 1,5 whichfwhen inserted snugly fits in the body part 12. 1t also has the inner annular upstanding flange 16 surrounding the centra-l opening' 16 which receives the lower end of the tube 18, the tube being secured at its lower end to the bottom by means of the flange 16 and extending upwardly centrally through the cup member into engagement at its upper end with the top 13 when the bottom 1e is inserted, the tube being secured to the bottom before the bottom is inserted into the cup body. The tube is of substantially Vuniform diameter both internally and externally and snugly fits the base b of the nipple member, it having the vent holes 17 which, when the cup member is applied to the nipple member, are just above the flange Y 16 to be in communication with the interior of the cup at certain times.
The upper end'of the tube is internally threaded to receive the threaded end 0 of the nipple member, such threaded connection drawing the base Vof the cup member against the washer 11 to effectra sealing fit. To insure'secure threaded engagement and to prevent self loosening of the cup member,
the upper end ofthe tube is preferably bifurcated and the two opposedl semi-circular sections e and f bent inwardly a distance securely held with sealing engagement on the nipple member. To facilitate turning of the cup member, it has the knurled belt 18. Surrounding the tube 18 and reciprocable thereon is the cylindrical sleeve 19. The sleeve is of such length that its upper end will bef'below the oil inlet openings 2O ofthe tube 18 when the cup is in upright position. These inlet openings 2O may be at any point at the upper end of the tube, but as shown, they are formed by enlarging the lower ends of the slots between the bifurcation ends c and f. The upper end of the sleeve 19 is of enlarged diameter to form the annular cup or pocket 21, and at opposite sides at this pocketthe sleeve is cut away to leave clearance or entrance passageways 22.
Describing now the operation, the nipple member is screwed into a supporting frame F to register its outlet passageway 8 with the duct 23 which leads to the bearing surfaces to be lubricated. ber, it is inverted and oil charged thereinto through thetube 18. When the cup is inverted, the sleeve 19 will be against the top 13 and the air vent openings 17 will be ex posed and will connect the interior of the cup with the exterior thereof. As the oil flows downwardly in the tube 18, it enters "thercup through the openings 20. 1f the passageways 22 of the sleeve are not opposite the openings 20, then the oil flows into and. through the pocket 21 until it reaches the passageways 22 from where it flows into ,the cup. upwardly and part of it enters the openings 20 which are adjacent the frusto conical section (Z of the spindle, the oil entering the enlarged space g and then gradually flowing down the capillary space s into the passageways 9 and then through the passageway 8 to the bearing surfaces. Some of the oil splashes from the cup intothe pocket 21 of the sleeve 19, or against the tube 18 at the passageways 22. This oil is lifted as the sleeve Y19 is reciprocated by the jolting and conducted to the openings 20, the sleeve acting somewhat like a pump plunger to raise the oil so thatit may flow through the open'- ings 20. The sleeve Vtherefore performs two functions, namely to close the air vents 17 when the cup is inupright position'and disconnected from the nipple structure, and to act as a plungerfor carrying oil to the outlet openings 20. The speed of oil feed fromvtheicup is determined by the thickness of the capillary space s between the spindle and tube. The enlarged space g acts Vas a reservoir to receive oil fromv the openings 20 but the oil ows from the reservoir slowing down the capillary space to the Vpassageways 9. If it is desired to increase the speed of flow, then the diameter of the section a vof the spindle would be correspondingly increased to in-4 and therefore reduce the resistance to flow therethrough. At its' lower end kthe tube 18 snugly lits the base b of the spindle and oil cannot escape. In case any oil should succeedin working its way Ldownwardly at this point', the sealing engagementeof the cups bottoml with the washer 11 would prevent escape of the oil. The engagement of the tube 18 with the section b of the stem also closes the air vent holes 17 so that the sleeve 19 is relieved of this duty when the @up has been applied to the nipple member.

In some oiling devices, felt or other material has been interposed inthe path of the oil to retard its flow.` vSuch yretardation is not uniform and therefore unreliable. In my improved construction, the oil is being continually thrown in the reservoir or funnel space g at the upper end of the tube 18, but its flow from such reservoir to the nipple passageway is retarded by the. restricting or capiliary space 8. Such retardation is uniform and constant so that the feed of oil into the bearing surface is uniform.
In do not, of course, desire to be limited to the exact construction, arrangement and operation shown and described as changes could Yreadily be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.V
I claim the following:
l. In a lubricating device, the combination of a nipple having a passagewaytherethrough, a spindle extending from said nipple, the upper end of said spindle being threaded, a cup having a closed bottom, a tube extending substantially from said bottom to the other end of the cupv and threaded at such other end to receive said threaded spindle whereby to lock the cup with its bottom against said nipple, openings at the upper end of said tube, and passageway connecting between said openings and said nipple passageway.
2, In a lubricating device, the combination of a nipple having a passageway therethrough, a spindle extending from said nipple and having its outer end threaded, a cupy member having a closed bottom, a tube extending from said bottom upwardly in said cup, said tube opening to the exterior at its lower end for receiving said spindle, the upper end of said tube being threaded to receive the threaded end of the spindle whereby to secure the cup to the nipple, there beind capillary space between said tube and spindle, the upper end of said tube having an opening connecting said space with the cup interior, the other end of said space being connected through said spindle with the nipple passageway.
In a lubricating device, the combination of a nipple having a passageway therethrough, a spindle extending upwardly from said nipple, a cup having a bottom, a tube extending centrally through said cup and through said bottom to be open to the exterior at its lower end to receive said spindle, the upper end of said spindle being threaded and the upper end of said tube being likewise threaded in order to receive the spindle thereby to secure said cup to the nipple, the lower section of Asaid spindle snugly receiving said tube and the section of the spindle above said lower section beingV of slightly reduced diameter to vleave a capillary space betweenthe spindle and the tube, said nipple passageway being continued a distance through saidv spindle, said spindle having lateral passageways connecting said cont-inued passageway with said capillary space, and openings totheupper end of said tube, connecting lsaid capillary space with the cups interior.
t, In a lubricating device of the class described, the combination of a nipple having a passageway therethrough, a spindle extending from said nipple, a cup having a closed bottom, a tube extending upwardly through said cup' from said bottom and open to the exterior at its lower end for receiving said spindle, threaded engagement between said tube and spindle for securing said cup on said nipple, and means for conducting lubricating fluid through said tube and to said nipple passageway.
5. In a lubricating device of the class described, the combination of a nipple, a spindle extending from said nipple, a passageway through said nipple and partly through said spindle and communicating with the exterior of the spindle, a cup, a tube extending through said'cup from its bottom, said tube-being open at its lower end to the cup exterior whereby it may be slipped down over said spindle and said cup supported on said nipple, the upper end of the said tube having entrance opening for lubricating fluid, and restiictedpassa-geway between said tube and spindle for retarding the flow of fluid from the tube entrance to the spindle and nipple passageway.

In a lubricating device of the class described, 'the combination of a nipple, a spindle extending therefrom, a passageway through said nipple and spindle, inlets to said passageway from the exteriorv of said spindle, a cup, a tube extending centrally through said cup from the bottom thereof and open at its lower end forreceiving said spindle whereby said cup may be seated on said nipple, a reservoir in the upper end of ysaid tube, there being openings in said tube connecting said reservoir wit-h the cup interror whereby oil may flow into said reservoir, and a restricted passageway between said tube and spindle vfrom said reservoir to the nipple passageway inlet.

In a lubricating device of the class described, the combination of a nipple, a spindle extending from said nipple, a passageway through said nipple, and inlets thereto from the sides of said spindle, a cup, a tube extending through ksaid cup from the bottom thereof, said tube being open at its lower end to the cup exterior whereby said cup may be slipped down over said spindle, the upper end ofv said tube being open to the cups interior whereby to receive oil from the cup, the diameter4 of said spindle-being such as to leave only a restricting passageway between the upper end of sai tube and the nipple passageway inlets whereby the iow of oil is retarded.
8. In a lubricating device of the class spindle extending therefrom, a cup having described, the combination of a nipple, a spindle extending from said nipple, a cup having a closed bottom, a tube extending through said cup from said bottom and open at its lower end to receive said spindle, a passageway through said nipple open to the tube interlor, said tube being open at its upper end for the flow of oil thereinto from the cups interior, means for retarding the flow of oil through said tube to the'nipple passageway, and air vent-openings through said tube which are closed by said spindle when said cup receives said spindle.
9. In a lubricating device of the class described., the combination of a nipple, a spindle extending therefrom, a cup having Va closed bottom, a tube extending through said cup from said bottom and having its lower end open for the reception of said spindle, means for securing said cup on said nipple, said nipple having a passageway open to the tube interior, the upper end of said tube being open to the cup interior, and air vent holes in said tube closed by said spindle when the cup is secured on said nipple.

In a lubricating device of the class described, the combination of a nipple having a passageway therethrough, a cup having a closed bottom, a tube extending through said cup from said bottom,ea spindle extending from said nipple for receiving said tube, the upper end of said spindle being threaded, the upper end of said tube having threaded bifurcated ends for clampingly receiving said spindle end, saidA tube being open for the iiow of oil therethrough to they nipple passageway. 11. In a lubricating device of the class described, the combination of a nipple, a spindle extending therefrom, a cup having a closed bottom, a tube extending through said cup from said bottom for receiving saidy spindle at its lower end, means for securing the cup to the nipple, said nipple having a passageway and the upper end of said tube being open tov the cup interior for the flow of oil therefrom to said nipple passageway, air vent holes at the lower end of said tube closed by said spindle when the cup is secured to the nipple, anda sleeve surrounding and reciprocable on said tube for closing said air vents when said eupis detached from said nipple.
12. In a lubricating device of the class described, the combination of Va nipple, a
a closed bottom, a tube extendingy through said cup from said bottom for receiving said spindle at its lower end, means for securing the cup to the nipple, said nipple y having a passageway andthe upper end of said tube being open to the cup interior for the flow of oil therefrom to said nipple pas- I sageway, air vent holes at the lower end of asV aplunger forV carrying lubricating fluid to the upper end of said tube.
13. In a lubricating device of the class described, the combination of Va nipple, aY spindle extending therefrom, a cup, a tube extending-through said cup and open at its lower end to receive said spindle, the upper end of said tube beingopento the cups interior, said nipple having a passageway open to the tube interior, and a sleeve reciprocable on said tube and operable to lift lubricating fluid tol and into the upperend of said tube.V
14. In a lubricating 'device ofthe class ing open at its upper end to the cup interior,
and a sleeve surrounding said tube and reciprocable thereon, said sleeve operating to carry oil to the upper end ofsaid tube.
15. In a lubricating device-of the class described, the combination of a nipple hav-V ing a passageway therethrough, a cup, a tube'` extending through said cup from its bottom and open atitsl lower end, means forV securing said cup `on said nipple with the tube in communication withthe -nipplepassageway, the upperendv of saidtube being open to the cup interior, a sleeve surrounding and reciprocable on said tube, and an oil carrying pocket at the upper end of said sleeve, oil splashing into said sleeve during jolting ofthe cup and said oil being delivered tothe tube when said sleevev is raised.V

In a lubricating device of the class described, the combination of a nipple having a passageway therethrough,a cup having a closed bottom, a tube extending from said bottom through said cup, a spindle extending from said nipple and adapted to reiio ceive said tube, said nipple passageway conwhen 'the cup isV on said nipple, and a sleeve surrounding-and reciprocable on said tube,
said sleeve when in lower position closing said airvent openings and when in Vupper Y position delivering lubricatingl fluid into said tube.
17. 'In a lubricating device of the class described, the combination of a nipple hav- 'Y ing a passageway` therethrough, a cup, a tube extending through said cupl from the bottom thereof, means Vfor securing said cup on said nipple with said tube in communieation with the nipple passageway, air Vent holes through the tube in the lower end thereof, and a sleeve surrounding and reoiproeable on said tube, said sleeve when in lower position closing said air vent holes and during its upward movement serving to carry lubricating fluid into said tube.
