(JASON B. MASON UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JASON B. MASON, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO REED FOUNDRY & MA- CHINE CO., OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
TRACTOR-PLOW.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JASON B. Mason, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Tractor-Flows. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tractor plows.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved tilting or adjusting means for the plows.
Further objects, and objects relating to details and economics of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a n'eferred' embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a detail side elevation of a structure embodying the features of my invention, parts being shown conventionally and others being omitted.
Fig. II is a detail plan view of the draft bars and the plow connections thereto, parts being shown in section on a line corresponding to the broken line 22 of Fig. III.
F III is a detail side elevation.
Fig. IV is a detail vertical section through the tilting means on a line corresponding to line 4-4 of Fig. V.
Fig. V is a detail horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Fig. IV.
Fig. VI is a detail-longitudinal section on a line corresponding to line 6-6 of Figs. II and VII.
F ig. VII is a detail section on a responding to line 77 of Fig. VI.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, I provide a main frame 1, preferably built up from channel iron. The raction wheels 2 are driven from the engine 3 through a suitable transmission 4. These parts are shown con ventionally. Plows 5 are provided with beams 6 connected at their forward ends line cor- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented )lay 1 1 1920.

with the cross head 7. The draw bars 8 are pivotally mounted on the hangers 9. The draw bars are connected at their rear ends by the cross member 10.. This cross member is formed of a pair of spaced members 11 and 12. The rear ends of the draw bars are raised and lowered by means of arms 13 on the rock shaft 1 1, the arms being connected to the draw bars by the links 15. The rock shaft is actuated by the lever 16. The means for holding the lever in its adjusted positions are not illustrated, as suitable means are well-known.
The crosshead 7 is connected to the cross member of the draw bars by the swivel connection consisting of a swivel bolt 17 through the crosshead engaging the swivel member 18. This swivel member 18 pivots on the eccentric block 19 on the pin 20. By adjusting this block 19 the draft is shifted laterally. The block is held in its adjusted position by means of the head 21 on the pin having a series of holes adapted to receive the locking pin 22.
The plows are raised and lowered by means of the crank 28 which is connected to the lever 24 pivoted at its forward end on the rock shaft 14, the rear ends of the lever being connected to the plows by the chains 25. The arm 26 of the crank 23 is connected to the lifting lever by the link 27.
To tilt the plows I provide a link 28 on the upper end of which is a spherical nut 29 having a ratchet wheel 30 thereon. This nut 29 is supported in a socket 31 carried by a bracket 32 on the rock shaft 14, the object of thus mounting the bracket being to raise and lower the bracket with the raising and lowering of the draft bars. The ratchet lever 33 is supported upon the link 28 by the swivel 34, the lever being engaged and disengaged from the ratchet by raising and lowering the same. The lower end of the link is connected by the pin 35 to the collar 36 on the arm 37 projecting from the beam crosshead.
lVith the parts thus arranged the plows may be tilted as well as raised and lowered and when the tilting mechanism is used in conjunction with. my improved raising andv lowering means, shown in my copending application, the plow is very easily handled and may be handled so that very satisfactory work may be accomplished.
I have illustrated and described my immodifications or variations in structural details which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled. in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a main frame, of draw bars pivotally mounted thereon, a cross piece pivoted on the rear end of said draw bars, plows provided with beams, a crosshead to which the front ends of said beams are connected, a swivel connection from said cross head to said draw bar cross piece, means for laterally adjusting said swivel connection on said draw bar cross piece, means for adjustably supporting said draw bars comprising a rock shaft provided with an arm connected to said draw bars, a tilting link connected to one end of said cross head, a bracket on said rock shaft provided with a socket, a spherical adjusting member disposed in said socket and having threaded engagement with said tilting link, said adjusting member being provided with a ratchet, an adjusting lever rotatably mounted on the upper end of said link to coact with said ratchet, and means for raising and lowering said plows.
2. The combination with a main frame, of draw bars pivotally mounted thereon, a crosspiece pivoted on the rear ends of said draw bars, plows provided with beams, a cross head to which the front ends of said beams are connected, a swivel connection from said cross head to said draw bar cross piece, means for adjustably supporting said draw bars comprising a rock shaft provided with an arm connected to said draw bars, a tilting link connected to one end of said cross head, a bracket on said rock shaft provided with a socket, a spherical adjusting member disposed in said socket and having threaded engagement with said tilting link, said adjusting'member being provided with a ratchet, an adjusting lever rotatably mounted on the upper end of said link to coact with said ratchet, and means for raising and lowering said plows.
3. The combination with a main frame,
of draw bars pivotally mounted thereon, a
cross piece pivoted on the rear ends of said draw bars, plows provided with beams, a cross head to which the front ends of said beams are connected, a swivel connection from said cross head to said draw bar cross piece, means for laterally adjusting said swivel connection on said draw bar cross ably mounted on the upper end of said link 7 to coact with said ratchet.
4;. The combination w1th a main frame,
of draw bars pivotally mounted thereon, a
cross piece pivoted on the rear ends of said draw bars, plows provided with beams, a cross head to which the front ends of said beams are connected, a swivel connection from said cross head to said draw bar cross piece, means for adjustably supporting said draw bars comprising a rock shaftprovided with an arm connected to saiddraw bars, a tilting link connected to one end of said cross head, a bracket on said rock shaft provided with a socket, a spherical adjusting member disposed in said socket and having threaded engagement with said tilting link, said adjusting member being provided with a ratchet, and an'adjusting lever rotatably mounted on the upper end of said link to coact with said ratchet.
5. The combination with a main frame, a
draw bar pivotally mounted thereon, a plow having a connection with said draw bar permitting the tilting of the plow, means for laterally adjusting the connection of the plow on the draw bar. for regulating the draft of the plow, means for adjustably supporting the frontendof'the plow comprising a rock shaft, provided with an arm connected to said'plow, a plow tilting means comprising a link connected to the plow, a b *acket on said rock shaft, an adjusting link carried by said bracket, and an adjusting means for said link.
(3. The combination with a main frame, a plow having a draft connection permitting the tiltingof the plow, means for adjustably supporting the front end of the plow comprising a rock shaft provided with an arm connected to said plow, a plow tilting means comprising a link connected to the plow, a bracket on said rock shaft, an adjusting link carried by said bracket, and an adjusting means for said link.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses. V
